Sucker Punch is a good movie. It is not about thick plots or "feel good for the heroin", it is about fantasy. A teenage girl is kicked to the curb by a less than ethical step-father after the mother dies - partly because she wrote him out of her Will and gave it all to the 2 daughters (read fast, it is there in the movie).
She escapes her bad predicament with fantasy that shadows what is happening in real life to make it more bearable. The fantasy within a fantasy is a coping mechanism for her. The character and plot development is both subtle and obvious. There is a fair amount of allegory in the fantasy scenes that will be lost on some people. Simply put, if they rated this movie poorly, they did not get it. It is what it is. Not for everybody.
It is more about having a good time at the theatre, seeing great visual affects, and a compelling soundtrack that sets the mood. It emphasizes style over content and has a Graphic Novel amount of plot and development.
The story is dark and has a strong Graphic Novel feel. It is rated PG13 and not R because it implies rape and murder, with exploitation of minors. There is no blood, people (not CGI characters) get shot off camera, and the attempted rapes are all stopped by the heroin (except one where she is saved). Again it is a dark movie about human nature and our ability to cope and triumph over it.
It is a hard PG13 and may still should have been R. The target audience is young males, but not kids. Parents should be mindful of this.
The IMAX version was a treat but not necessary. It is worth seeing on a big screen first, before watching on DVD.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Being unfamiliar with the source material, I thought it was a good movie. The positives are the special affects (ILM and Skywalker Sound - both are Lucas' companies) and interesting story. Felt it was engaging and different and had a polished feel of a big budget movie.
The negatives are not new to Hollywood. It did feel a little longer than it was due to the character development was at a leisurely pace at times. The writing at times was near inspiring but not quite there (he gave an inspiring speech but missed the mark and the development from it was a little forced). A few lines seemed out of place, but not many to take away much from the over all story. The characters would say something like, "this is <whatever>" in an effort to explain what it was. Then they moved on without developing why it was important.
One thing that caught me by surprise is that it was set both in a medieval fantasy environment and modern times. Meaning, the characters acted like they were in Harry Potter but the scenes were more Bravehart. The cartoon on Nickelodeon is rated Y7 but the movie was PG-13. The acting was aimed at a demographic somewhere in between.
From what I've read in the user reviews, the negative comments came from fans. "It did not *exactly match* the source material". Movies rarely ever do.
I had high expectation from an M. Night Shyamalan production. It was less than my expectations, but still an enjoyable film. I saw it in 3D. It did not add as much as other movies in 3D, could just be that Avatar (James Cameron) set the bar very high. Would think the 2D version is just as good.
It is worth seeing on the big screen. I am looking forward to the sequels.
The premise is not new but has potential to be different than the other "serious cop / silly cop comedies". There are some laughs. More jokes missed than hit. OK, a lot more missed than hit.
There are more negative things to say than positive for this movie. It would appeal more to the fans of Tracy Morgan and Seann William Scott than fans of Bruce Willis. This is a comedy (or tried to be) with Tracy and Seann presenting most the attempts at humor. Both went too far and over acted in my opinion. There may be some people that find the humor entertaining.
If you are curious to see this film, wait until it hits the discount theaters or the Library.
To tiredly go where other movies have gone before.

In short, pretty decent sci-fi movie with great special affects. "Loosely" based on Gene Roddenberry's creation. Characters and the ship have familiar names with vaguely similar but different personalities.
Acting was good but the actors were not encouraged to play the original characters.
Trekkies will notice many continuity flaws. The plot has mechanism seen in other sci-fi movies or TV series. Little originality but never the less, a well done film.
Directing, editing, acting, costumes, and special affects (by ILM) were all very good.
Change character names/ships/Starfleet affliliation and it could have been any other sc-fi movie.
This movie is not worth watching. The cinematography was worse than the Blair Witch. Very shaky hand camera perspective the whole movie. You find yourself hoping it would end, but does not. The sound effects with the shaky camera will make the some have motion sickness.
The acting was moderately better than reality TV shows. There were some stereotypical horror movie forced tension moments when characters do things a normal person would not do.
There is not a clear plot to the movie. One could say it was a love story, but it is more like a documentary of Darwin Award recipients. When the main characters start dieing, you did not feel bad for them, it was more like they deserved to die for being stupid. No emotional involvement by the audience due to poor script writing and weak directing. You do not even get T&A as most cheap horror/drama do, just to get the younger male crowd.
The special affects was where the budget went. Some pretty decent modern affects, but they were not the focus or point of the movie. After spending 2 hours in the theatre, most people were outside talking about it trying to STILL find the point to the movie.
The only good thing I could find to say about the movie is the story is daring break from normal Hollywood scripts. It does not have a happy "feel good" ending. In fact, it answers no questions and you do not know if the main characters live or not, or if the villain lives or not. It is a documentary without a voice over explaining what you are seeing or why.
Not worth your time watching. Do not buy it at Walmart for $5.50 when it comes out. Spend the 2 hours getting a root canal instead, at least you get Novocaine.
