I wanted so bad to like this movie. Leonardo DiCaprio has turned into my favorite actor and I've liked everything I've seen him in. As some of the other viewers have mentioned, the movie was definitely slow at times, and Armie Hammer's make-up was ridiculous. They aged DiCaprio pretty well but Hammer looked like something from a 1960's B-movie. He might as well have been wearing plaster of paris on his face. Thumbs up to DiCaprio's acting as usual and if you're a fan of his, you'll want to see the movie. That's the only reason I'm recommending it. Otherwise, wait for it to come out on DVD.
This was a pretty good movie...good story plot, good acting, particularly from Kate Winslett, who is always good. I don't want to spoil anything, but as a few of the other reviewers have already mentioned, the ending is terrible. If you like a movie that resolves at the end, then you'll have a bit of a problem with this one. If you like a movie that leaves you up to your own conclusion, then you'll like it. I would have given it 4 stars except for that one issue.
Alright, I admit it: I'm a sucker for a movie that's told in flashback by an older person. And if it's narrated I like them even that much more. This is a beautifully-shot love story that really impressed me. I haven't seen any of the Twilight movies and was a bit skeptical about Pattinson, but he held his own. The movie captures the feeling of the depression and the costumes and hairstyles were very authentic. If you liked the feeling, look, and style of The Notebook, Big Fish, and the three Stephen King dramas, Stand By Me, Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile (all told in flashback and narrated) you'll LOVE this movie.
I was really surprised at this movie. There were some genuinely scary moments, and one of the things I really liked was that there were very few CGI moments. There were a lot of "jump" moments. It was "Poltergeist" meets a little of "The Sixth Sense" with a bit of a classic Twilight Zone episode called "Little Girl Lost" thrown in. The people in the other world were worth the price of admission alone. The only thing that stopped me from giving this movie 5 stars was the cheap ending. But the movie itself was pretty good.
I'm not in any way a big fan of Matthew McConaughey, but he won me over in this movie. Great story line and the movie keeps you interested from the opening scene to the ending scene. For some of you old school fans, think "The Verdict" meets "Jagged Edge". Absolutely great!!
I'm not sure when this movie is supposed to be taking place, but it's obviously at the minimum a few hundred years ago. So people back then actually said "I'm gonna cut his head off" and "I'm gonna protect you"?? And "She had a crush on me"? GONNA? CRUSH? Need I say more?
I wasn't sure what to expect with this movie, but it is brilliant. The main character's transformation near the end of the movie is worth the price of admission alone. Absolutely great.
Considering the movie subject, this could have been so much better. It was nice to see Renee Zellweger in a different type roll than all the cutesy ones she plays, but overall, the movie doesn't really explain what's going on with the girl and who she is or where she came from. It wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen, but definitely something you should wait to come out on DVD.
I thought this movie, although a little predictable in the end, was absolutely great. I wasn't familiar with Jason Bateman at all, so I wasn't sure what to expect. He was great. The little boy that played the son was an amazing little actor, and was perfect in the part. This was a great comedy love story, with some occasional serious overtones. I'd highly recommend it.
This type of movie has been done so many times, I was skeptical about Sandler being able to come up with a fresh idea. But it definitely worked. It had a lot of funny moments, practically from the beginning of the movie. There was good chemistry between the main players and the supporting characters. I guess the only disappointing thing was Chris Rock. His character is a whining, girly, house husband that lives for Grey's Anatomy and cooking shows. That was a waste of a top comedian. Otherwise, the move was very good, and something you could see with kids over 10.
