A very interesting "twist" on the scientific documentary, proving that learning can be fun. Both history and science very engaging, Prof. Kandel and his wife and family and others in doc most personable. I went for the science and enjoyed thoroughly.
A documentary about a musician/lyricist/performer with his head on straight. The man not only knows what is important in his life, but in life, period. As I listened to Bill Withers talk, and sing, and interact, and his music, I had one thought: "Here's GENUINE TALENT--no bells and whistles, no freak shows." The documentary was a delight, and the audience applauded at the end--something that hasn't happened in recent memory.
I expected it to be funnier; that being said, there were great moments (and a fair share of dull moments) in a somewhat uneven offering by QT. Overall, I did like it--Christopher Waltz is amazing. And, like the great Kill Bill, I love the way the mystery unraveled.
Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci are superb--what a pleasure to watch such artists. Film weakens somewhat when they are not on the screen, but overall it's fun. I want to google all things Julia Child!
Excellent documentary about Gertrude Berg, a pioneer of radio and television, whose work was appreciated universally way before the Internet. Unfortunately, she and her colleagues were victims of HUAC, making this bit of history (the documentary) all the more necessary and important. I hope those over 60 will bring younger members of their family to see this. High school history teachers and librarians, take note!
A beautifully cast, photographed, and written 'little' film that is a wonderful way to spend a late Sunday afternoon. Perfect antidote to the usual summer 'action' fare.
I had viewed FTA in 1971 or 1972 while a post-grad in the midwest; it was shown at a VVAW (Vietnam Veterans Against the War) fundraiser. And Jane Fonda made an appearance then, as she did at the IFC Center last night. I didn't hesitate to order tickets immediately upon receiving e-mail about this event. I went "for old times' sake"--and thoroughly enjoyed the film, Ms. Fonda, and my fellow travelers, most of whom were my age or more (60).
Ghost Town is a very funny, enjoyable movie that reminds me of the '30s screwball comedies with Cary Grant, Irene Dunne, Kate Hepburn, William Powell and Myrna Loy. It's classy and the casting superb. Ricky Gervais and Kristen Wiig stand out in a stellar lineup. Do yourself a favor and see this movie--it's a very intelligent comedy. I particularly like movies about NYC that are filmed in NYC.
