It's exciting when beautiful people sing beautifully, and that is what you had throughout all the major roles in Anna Bolena. The only thing I found disconcerting was that I was comparing the Anna Netrebko of Romeo and Juliet (with Roberto Alagna) and this much heavier Anna. The head piece didn't help, because it left all her neck and chins to be seen. But what a gorgeous voice! Perhaps the weight gives her more stamina, which she needed and had for this production.
I agree with Etienne, Elena WAS born for this role, and I loved the passion Roberto Alagna displayed in loving, then hating, but always consumed by, Carmen. At first I was disappointed that we wouldn't have the superb connection with Angela and Roberto that we had last year in La Rondine, but I am VERY glad that Garanca replaced Georghiu. Alagna still showed wonderful feeling, if not as intimate. Hats off to Mr. Rhodes for stepping in with such short notice and doing a splendid job.
There are not enough superlatives to review this Opera with Renee Fleming. The last time the Met performed this was in 1978 with Beverly Sills, because there was no one in between with the enormous talent it takes to sing this role. The music of Massenet was sublime, and the violin solo of "Meditation" by David Chan brought tears to many. A wonderful aspect is being able to see what's going on backstage and the talks with the performers.
