The Met's Il Trovatore was a highlight of this season. Great music, great staging, great performances. It doesn't get any better than this. I wish they would bring it back this summer.
Renee Fleming was terrific in this opera, also the other performers. The repartee about music v. poetry was tedious in the first act, but the last act was worth waiting for -- the gorgeous introductory orchestral piece and the Countess's final aria. I have a recording of these on Fleming's CD, Strauss Heroines, that I have enjoyed many times.
This is one of the best Met Opera Live in HD telecasts. The opera is one glorious piece of music after another, and the performances were all outstanding. The only problem is the audience was aware of some boom-boom special effects in the theatre next to ours. The operas should be shown in a theatre next to another movie that isn't loud enough to penetrate the theatre in which the opera is shown.
Really enjoyed this opera - lovely music and great singing, especially by Renee and Dmitri. However, in the first act the sound was so low the singers could barely be heard. We could also sometimes hear the booming sound vibrations from a neighboring theatre in the movie complex -- this was an unfortunate distraction.
The Met's Romeo & Juliette was wonderful -- great singing on the part of Anna Netrebko and Roberto Alagna -- I missed this in 2007 and was glad for the rebroadcast this summer.
Armida is not among my favorite operas, but some of the music is really beautiful, and the performances by Renee Fleming and Lawrence Brownlee (and the other 5 tenors) are top drawer. Armida is worth seeing if just to hear Fleming's heart-stopping coloratura. Excellent staging, and the ballet was very entertaining.
I thoroughly enjoyed this French opera. Excellent performances, especially by the baritone Simon Keenlyside as Hamlet. He has a great voice and is riveting in this tragic role. The music, composed in the mid-1800's, is very accessible and melodic, though there are no memorable arias that you would hum on the way out.
A grand and glorious production of my favorite opera. Beautiful, touching performances by Fleming and Graham., Gorgeous costumes and scenery. Sublime music. Not to be missed!
