I commend the writers and actors for not including the smut we usually have to put up with in comedies. No, it isn't laugh until you cry funny, but it is highly entertaining. I would see it again for the beautiful scenery and the unique information about North American birds. I definitely recommend this movie, and feel free to bring the kiddos!
This movie was funny and a pretty realistic life story, however I have to agree with other reviews that the ending scene where the high schooler gives the child an envelope with assumed naked pictures of herself inside is completely inappropriate and illegal. Are we sexualizing children this young now? That scene ruined the movie for me. Bad taste.
With a family of mostly boys, I only see action and super hero movies, but Hey, this was great! My daughter and I were completely entertained throughout the movie. It was cleverly done, acting was great, love story was totally engaging. We can't wait for the sequel!
Did we see the same movie? This movie was scene after scene of long, drawn-out animated fighting. Very little story line, although what little there was was touching enough. We were all squirming in our seats ready to get out of there.
Of course the movie was entertaining enough for us adults, but truly, if this is what the rating system is calling age 13 appropriate....WOW, how things have changed. Parents of your 11 and 12 year olds please be warned. I am almost always okay with the super hero movies of this rating (with the exception of the second Transformers movie which was pure smut). If we hadn't been cram packed in the middle of a sold out theater, we would have gathered up our kiddos and left. My 12 year old now knows about prostitution, lap dances, young girls selling their bodies, bondage, etc. He also got a good look at about 20 women dressed in their sensual underwear parading around for drunken men. A good, close up, long look. He turns 13 next month. I wouldn't have allowed him to see this movie for YEARS. Shame on me for staying.
To me, who is not a vampire devotee, I would call this movie a darker version of Shark Boy and Lava Girl. I went alongside my husband, and we were both disappointed. Please do not take your children under 13 to see this movie. My 11 year old, who is pretty mature, would have been grossly bothered by many of the images in this movie. A complete and confusing mix of a childrens movie with very graphic adult special effects. It was a very predictable, generic vampire story with the "freak show" gang as the "twist?" Not my cup of tea.
The only thing positive I would say about his movie is that there were a few, fairly typical, laugh out loud scenes. However, the crude and grotesque seemed to overpower any true comedy. Seems to me like the rated R movies of today stand for something more along the lines of "just how far can we take the sexually explicit scenes and off color jokes?". Robert Downey Jr. was for the most part inaudible, and Jack Black was highly disappointing. The only thing I found enjoyable about this movie was Tom Cruise's dance scene--partly because it was the only thing I found humorous and partly because it took place during the credits.
