As a movie it was fantastic. As 'the beginning' of the Kirk area, it was pretty darn good. There were suprises, as well as a better understanding of how things took shape and how the crew got aboard the Enterprise. It also showed how the characters met and befriended each other and further developed some of the lesser characters on the original Star Trek that we knew and loved but didn't know to much about and probably never realized how special they all were.
The fight scenes, both the hand to hand combat and starship battles, were filled with a lot camera switching and though had some exciting aspects to them, were a bit difficult to follow.
Overall, you should really like it at worst case and may absolutely love it at best.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
