Absolutely one of the best films I've seen in the last decade - possibly longer. Destined to become one of the best sci-fi films of all time. The amazingly heartwrenching amalgam of futuristic/alien/otherworldly issues with a very emotional story of going home was extremely compelling and completely believable. South African setting is terrific, and the S African actors amazing. You must see this - more than once. One comes away with a strong social message without having been hit over the head. Truly creative.
Script is flat and unimaginative. The only thing that saved this is Depp's performance, which is terrific, and several other smaller roles are done quite well, Jason Clarke, Stephen Dorff, and Peter Gerety in particular. Marion Cotillard was interesting, as was Lili Taylor in the two woman's roles. Much of the script left too many loose ends and inexplicable escapes, explanations and just plain incongruous situations. As a BioPic, I'd rather have watched Mommie Dearest: at least it had some life in it!
We were doubled over with laughter for most of the film. A brilliant send-up of the film biz which hysterically exposes all of its dark sides. This made me think there's a ray of hope for movie-goers out there, if these guys continue to produce. Downey is amazing as the fatuous Aussie would-be Olivier, Stiller is great in his best role ever, and Tom Cruise and Nick Nolte's cameos are stupendous. Everyone in the cast is terrific, and the script had quite a few surprises, which is rarely the case these days. RUN to see it!
