A tour de force. Such wild staging could have overpowered the singing and the message, but the power of the principal performers and the close-ups, not to mention Levine's masterful conducting, kept it all in balance.
Most interesting was Nicklausse's participation--hovering, commentary, interaction--lots of surprises. Kate's facial expressions and body posture conveyed a lot and persuaded one to her point of view.
Thanks to Bloomberg for making the HD broadcasts possible.
Much neglected opera comes to life with first-rate performance. No sound problems to report at the AMC Chesterfield Theatre outside of St. Louis. Took my husband for first time who now tells everyone this is the way to see opera (he's hard of hearing). Two friends who never had attended these broadcasts before also loved it. Thank you Met!
Susan Graham gets a gold star for her interviews--just before performing! Mephistopheles looked and sounded eveil and seductive. Most impressed with the chorus - big role! Though others are bothered by the difficulty of getting just the right mix of close-up and zoomed-out views, I was not at all. What a challenge! Really appreciate the chance to see and hear Berlioz's masterpiece.
Hooray for Berlioz! Susan Graham went all out, maybe too far, granting an interview just before going on stage! But she sang like the angel she eventually became - wings and all. Can one really get to heaven by climbing a ladder?
The bad guys also deserve kudos, starting with their evil-eyed master. What a guy! What a costume! The devils and sprites all sang and danced superbly.
A profound experience - the medium did not obscure the message, but provided an intimate view of the times, the fear and other emotions of the individuals involved in this feat --and their naivete. We are no wiser in these days, but it behooves us to pay attention to what happened then and what could happen now.
This opera, and the art form as a whole, does get us to pay attention. The big screen format enhances that! I'm in love with this new way to see and hear opera.
