The story is one we all know, but it's told a little differently. Visual effects were OK, and when first exposed I thought "The Thing" was a pretty awesome creature. But as the movie progressed, "The Thing" became pretty goofy in some sequences. Like others have said, there were a few shock sequences that made you jump some. I wouldn't call the movie scary, but it did keep you interested. I wouldn't recommend it for young kids, or screaming women like the one that sat next to me in the theater.
In summary, it's nothing to get excited about, but if you have nothing better to do, it's an entertaining couple of hours.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Amazing technology, a good story, and James Franco and John Lithgow were excellent in their roles. I would strongly recommend watching the HBO program on the making of the movie. It was amazing to see the technology of the making come full swing in the movie. It is way beyond Avatar. It's not IMAX, and not 3D, and didn't need to be either. It will make you laugh, jolt you out of your seat a couple of times, and for some, bring a tear. It's a great setup of a sequal that will bring us to the time frame of the original Planet of the Apes. It was very entertaining from beginning to end. Stay for the credits.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I watched this movie in IMAX....lots of noise, good special effects, good music score and surprising quality acting from the kids. The story was develping nicely and all of a sudden this horrible monster who was eating people has an unexplained bonding moment with a kid he should have eaten. Then magically this water tower turns into a space ship....dad and son are united, dad and daughter are united.....the monster leaves and that's that. I just sat there and thought......that was really lame. Stay for the end credits. The complete Super 8 movie the kids are working on is finished and is pretty good.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Earth was an entertaining movie, but I was disappointed. Most of it came from Discovery's Planet Earth which I watched in HD on my TV and home theater system. The color and details were much better on my TV, as was the sound and the musical score. Surprisingly, I thought Planet Earth's narration was also better, and I love James Earl Jones. Had I not seen Planet Earth, this would have been much better.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
