Gotta' say, I didn't expect to like this film nearly as much as I did. I graduated from high school in '75 so this is my era, and I knew the music scene in LA well... I expected to find plenty at fault with the film... but, I didn't. It looked and felt like ’75. I was a little hesitant about Stewart and Fanning at the beginning, but they really grow into their characters as the film progresses. And although it's Fanning's film, Stewart gives a fearless performance that is edgier than anything I’ve seen her do previously, and very convincing. Michael Shannon captured Kim Fowley, who was a regular, an oversize madman, on the club scene. The weak link in the film is the characterization of Rodney Bingenheimer. Sigismondi must have been so afraid of falling into an easy parody, that she didn’t allow for any essence of Rodney to attach to the character. How unfortunate since Rodney has such a distinct, identifiable personality. And, were dog collars really worn in ’75? Maybe it’s my faulty memory, but I remember them hitting around ’77… Anyway, great, fast-paced, interesting film.
I found Avatar a disappointment after hearing all the hype. The cliched storyline was the biggest disappointment, but the over-the-top acting and one-dimensional characters were also a letdown, and it could have been much shorter. In it's favor was the best 3-D I've seen to date, and some good special effects. Would I recommend it? Only with the above mentioned warnings.
