When I saw Aaron Eckhart flip his coin for the first time and realized where his character was headed, it suddenly became clear to me how far the Batman franchise has come since Tim Burton's beautiful but empty offerings. The writing in this film is outstanding, and aspires to the best theatrical fare. The movie is too long and the chase scenes too repetitive - too often we go back to "let's watch Batman go real fast." But the story is outstanding. The screenwriters took a huge risk by stopping the action to have the characters discuss the nature of heroes, good, and evil, and the best that can be said of Ledger, Eckhart, Oldman and Bale is that they rose to the level of the script.
