Having first seen the live performance several years ago, the movie, while amusing, paled in comparision. I supose the big screen can never rival a stage production, but it seemed to lack the energy, spirit, and humor of the live performance. I truely missed getting out of my seat and dancing and singing at the end!
The movie did not hold true to the original ABBA versions of the songs, which I personally found disappointing. The characters, especially that played by Christine Baranski, were not quite as rowdy and raunchy, and therefore some of the humor was lost.
To its credit, I attended with a friend who had never seen the stage show, and who is not a fan of ABBA, and she absolutely loved it!
I would recommend this film to others who are looking for a good laugh and a throw-back to some good music. But if you've seen the live performance lower your expectations.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
