...and could have been made a lot better by shortening the movie by 20 minutes. There were a few moments when I thought it might be going somewhere and taking us to some interesting places .... and then it didn't really go anywhere original, funny or all that fascinating. This is a slow, plodding tale of a woman thrust into a role of independence who hits a few bumps along the way. It felt like a TV light comedy-drama from the 1970's with a stretched thin plot. The best part of the film was simply seeing Deneuve and Depardieu on screen. Deneuve is still gorgeous and "sparkly". Depardieu is always interesting to watch and there is a lot of him to watch here - he has really gained some heft. Wanted to like this one .... but cannot recommend it. A rhino horn down.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Potiche is a very French (subtitles) quirky take on what happens when a trophy wife is thrust into a leadership position when her corporate brute of a misogynist husband falls ill in the 1970s. Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu work together as easily as a cup and saucer in this ever so light yet not totally predictable tale of an empowered woman and how she can change the world around her. Its cute and uniquely French. If you are looking for something both different and traditional, this is it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Sweet, quirky tale. Clever dialogue and interesting minor twists to what could have been predictable story line. Terrific acting, especially Catherine Deneuve. As a person of a certain age, I really enjoyed the throw-back to the late '70s in terms of clothes and interior design and music. As with "8 Women," charming use of music in a nostalgic way.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Potiche is a throwback to movies of the "70's in which a taken for granted wife comes into her own when her self-centered, misogynistic husband gets sick. De Neuve's character provided the dowry for her husband, a prosperous umbrella factory. He has taken this paternalistically run factory and turned into his private Libya. Meanwhile, his wife has nothing more to do than commune with birds and deer and write down daily verse. Once she takes over the plant durng her husband's illness, she reinstates the old-fashioned values of her father and all is well. This could not be accomplished without the help of her former lover Gerard DePardieu. One of the joys of the film is watching the two work and dance together, delightful scenes. While this is in no way an Important Film, it is defintely an delightful way to spend an evening.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
