First, this was the first time I have seen a feature film in IMAX, and it sort of reminded me of when quadraphonic sound came out and lasted briefly: the records that came out had lots of thumping, roaring, crashing, and surprise sounds coming out 180 degrees apart. All for show, of course. Same thing here. I enjoyed seeing Harry and his pals disapparate with a snap - again, and again -- but did not appreciate the excessive sound. SInce I mentioned quad sound, it may be obvious that I am not in my twenties. Maybe if you are twenty-something, you enjoy having your ears de-sensitized. I don't. Enough said.
This particular episode was a disappointment, since it felt like a road trip. Now there on some beach, now in the woods, now briefly on Diagon Alley. Not much in the way of direct conflict or character development. I am looking forward to the final movie, since it will have all the great revelations of the final book that this one could not include for reasons of length. I understand why they decided to make this the transitional episode, to get us to that final, thrilling point, but I don't sympathize. Maybe I'm just weary of Harry and his dilemma. It could be worse: I could be watching another Batman episode. (Nooooooo!)
Any HP fan will probably go see this regardless of what people say about it, but if you are saving your pennies, I would save them for the next episode, and reread the book. Your ears will thank you for it.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. One is by far the best Harry Potter movie to date. The pace of the movie combined with a close following of the important aspects of the book cause the avid fan to become immersed in the magical world of the film and lose all track of time. Stimulating to the end, HP 7.1 is a gloriously executed spectacle, living up to even Hermione's own standards of excellence.

This film has breathed new life back into the Harry Potter movies. After seeing Half Blood Prince, and being disappointed, I was concerned that we were going to be offered the half told story from here on in the movie series. There were many parts of that story that were left out all together or changed so much in the screen version of Half Blood Prince that at many times I felt I must have read a different book. I was pleased to see that Deathly Hallows follows the book much more precisely. Even with a runtime of 2 1/2 hours, I found myself wanting more when it ended. The story, action and suspense really kept up a good pace. I saw it with a friend who has not read the books but has watched the films and he found some of this story difficult to follow. Even split into two films, I can see where information critical to understanding all that is going on is lost in the screen version but this is not a fatal error for this film. Our three main stars have grown up into some impressive acting talents and these talents come through in many scenes where they interact on a more emotional level. Overall this was a very enjoyable movie. One detractor was that I paid extra to see the IMAX version but found that this was not an IMAX theater, just the biggest screen at the local theaterplex and not very much like the real IMAX, so check carefully before spending the extra.

Movie stuck pretty close to the first half of the book. I was not expecting that. Some scary scenes where the snake was involved. A friend who was seeing the movie with me got some good scares. All in all, an excellent movie with great action sequences and an excellent script. Well done!!!

In my opinion, this is a great addition to the series because, in addition to examining and further developing the all important relationship between Harry, Hermione and Ron, it sets up events that will lead to the final outcome. There is some excitement at the beginning, but the character driven screenplay, direction and acting are what put this at the top of the franchise. A must see for us Harry Potter fans. I plan on going to see this one again.

After the Half blood prince, I thought there may be a continuation of a "bad movie" after a "good book". Not so this time. The movie follows the book and keeps the viewer wanting the next chapter but at the same time not wanting it to end. After seeing Part 1, I took out my book and started reading the part after the ending of the movie....With that said, I just can't wait to see Part 2. We have seen some of the previews with the recent trailers of Part 1. If you haven't read the book, I would suggest that it be a pre-requisite for Part 2. I saw the movie with my daughter and she said she had problems following the characters. That will probably improve in Part 2 when Neville, Jenny, McGonigle and Hogwarts play a much bigger role.

. .. but this movie was so much better than that one. I thought they did a good job in following the book - I just re-read it a couple of weeks ago - and the stuff that was left out didn't mess up the story. The ending was abrupt but after thinking about it, that was the only place it could have been stopped. Rupert Gint is finally coming into his own and he did a great job. I loved the animation when the 3 Sons was read in the Beadle and the Bard. And the effects when Ron was imagining Harry and Hermoine together was surreal and great. I am so glad that the same director is doing the 2nd half. I just hope that the movie is released in regular IMAX - my son and I can't do 3-D - we both get splitting headaches. I hope that the studios realize that there are a lot of people out here who don't think that 3-D is wonderful.

I am not a huge Harry Potter fan but I did enjoy the film. The cinematography was excellent but for an IMAX film I was a little disappointed. It felt like i was watching a regular film not an IMAX version. Save your money and see the regualr version, and take the extra money buy some popcorn instead. Cannot wait for part 2.

When it was done I found it hard to believe that 2 1/2 hours had passed. I was spellbound and riveted during the whole movie. The special effects were great and the animation, in particular, was top notch, especially during the tale of the 'Three Brothers' and the horcruxes torment of Ron. The music helped move the action forward as well as keeping me on the edge of my seat. It is so exciting to see how these actors have matured in their roles. Can't wait until part II.

I agree with many of the reviews that stated the movie would be much better having read the book first. So much detail was missing for me. eg: the scenes where Harry visited his parent's grave site; how long were they in hiding (never mentioned). The book made me feel Harry's emotions in these and many other scenes, the movie seemed to much more interested in the action. It was a good movie, just not as good as it could have been. Oh, and of course it is not for young children (dark). Harry Potter's readers (as children) are well within the college age group now. Also, we were VERY disappointed that it was not in 3D. Advertisements at movie previews, the TV ads and the internet search when we bought the tickets, all said 3D. I don't think $29 for IMAX was a value without 3D. We felt "hoodwinked".

I was worried after how bad The Halfblood Prince was, but this movie far outshines the last. Let's hope the same director does part 2. The flow of the movie followed pretty close to how I remember the book and that was one of the major problems with the last in the series. I also like where part 1 ends. I highly recommend to anyone that is a fan of the series.

Unlike many reviewers, I only know HP through the movies, never having read any of the books. So I cannot speak to the aspect that appears so important to so many reviewers, namely, how true the movie is or is not to the original. I will take the majority's word for the fact that the movie makers outdid themselves in this case with respect to the fidelity of this movie to the book. Overall, the movie was very well acted and the younger actors have clearly grown in skill as well as physically. The cinematography was excellent and visually the movie is wonderful with great special effects and on the eye candy rating scale is fully deserving of 5 stars especially in IMAX.. So given the fact that this movie is so faithful to the original any minor misgivings I have must be directed toward the storyline. It would be nice if HP and his friends did not seem so hopelessly outgunned by the forces of evil for almost the entire movie and it is a little depressing that the good guys keep taking one for the team while so little damage seems to be inflicted upon the cohorts of evil. So I guess that Part 2 will have to rectify all of that imbalance - a pretty daunting challenge for a 2 and a 1/2 hour finale movie. Nevertheless, I am clearly hooked and plan to be there for Part 2. Thereafter, inspired by the movie experience, I might even make a point of reading the books?

This is review of the IMAX experience that we did not experience as the theatre had something break down. Also, we were informed that after purchasing the tickets through movietickets.com, we still had to wait in the long line to have the credit card I used for the online purchase, processed at the theatre. That was not a pleasant experience.

The movie assumes the audience has all of the previous movies still fresh in its memory, which in my case was not true -- I would have appreciated a quick scrolled recap reminding me of who's who and what's what. The filming devolves into cacaphonies of motion, color, and blurs which do nothing but hurt the eyes. Other than that, the acting was good, the sets were well done, the CGI flawless; however, the actors' enunciation often lacked clarity, thus detracting from the overall quality. Emma Watson's recent bouts with well publicized immodesty detracted from her screen image.

This isn't about the movie so much as the IMAX experience. We were excited about seeing the movie in IMAX but were a bit delayed in getting to the theatre. So we had to sit in the front section -- second row. Due to the IMAX, the visuals were incredibly distorted at that distance. It was very distracting and NOT WORTH IT. The theatre should be aware of this and not sell so many tickets when there are seats where the IMAX visually does not work. I will never go to an IMAX at this AMC theatre again.

Best in the series...the actors have grown up with their characters; and as actors, they have expressed their roles as more than cute kids. They express the anguish and uncertainty they face in frightening evil as well as in their daily relationships as friends. I can hardly wait for part 2!!!
I have read all the books, seen all the movies...as in all series there are some stronger than others, but I have enjoyed them all. This rates on top!!!!!

Very enjoyable film. Earlier HP's were more suited for younger children but as the cast ages the content becomes more intense. I can't wait for Part II. I appreciate the fact that the movie is very true to the book.

I'm not an avid Harry Potter fan but the last few movies have been great. This one followed suit as the story was great the action was great the effects were great but the sound was painfully loud in the theater
