I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! Fans of the books will appreciate the attention to detail and the fact that this movie is in 2 parts. There is no way to cover everything that happens in the 7th book in one 2-3 hour movie.

One of the biggers rip offs in a long while. Running thru the woods for two hours ( see the poster) out of two and a half hours certainly saved BIG BIG Bucks on production costs. Shooting at each other with their wands like a western? You could have told the story in 20 minutes with time to spare.
IMAX is great if only they had a decent movie to show.

I am an avid reader of the series and huge fan of the movies, and I felt this movie paid due tribute to the excellence of JK Rowling's vision. The movie's beginning sets the mood, showing the prelude to the dark times the trio are in and about to face. Hermione's departure from her parents is amazing shot and was extremely emotional. The movie does an excellent job of moving between action and more serene segments, never letting either drag on too long. The trio have come a long way as actors, and their chemistry has never been more clearly illustrated than in the powerful scenes they share throughout. They have gotten to a point where they can convey emotions or communicate to both each other and the audience through expressions or gestures. The supporting cast is, as always, excellent. Ralph Fiennes finally gets some face time in this movie, the first real chance since GoF to show his purely evil take on the Dark Lord. Rickman's Snape only shows up for a short time, but I am hoping he will be featured more in the second part as he was in the book. One of my favorite and unexpected treats was the chance to really see the silly side of the Weasley twins, who have always been a comic backdrop but really shine in their scenes here. I absolutely loved how they showed the story of the Three Brothers from Beadle the Bard, a brilliantly animated clip that fit perfectly with the ambience of the movie. One piece of advice to casual fans of the movies who haven't read the books... READ THE BOOKS, or at least get with someone who has. You will be very confused at certain points which aren't explained. Listen very carefully, as some bits of information crucial to the story are dropped in the background through radio reports or side conversations. I was also very happy with the choice of where to cut this movie and lead into the finale. When I read the book again after hearing the last movie would come in two parts (an excellent decision, as Rowling packed so much into the last year that there is NO way one movie could ever cover it), I tried to discern, if I were the producer or director, where I would chop it. To my pleasant surprise, the movie ends exactly where I thought it would, leading into the second half of the tale, which is almost a separate story in itself. As a dedicated fan, I was thrilled with this installment, and the only disappointment I faced was leaving the theater realizing I now have to wait until July to see the finale!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I loved this movie and felt that it may be truest to the books of all the previous ones. I saw it in iMax, which I'm not sure made that much difference. Right before seeing the movie I rewatched HP & the Half-Blood Prince and reread the last two books (actually I borrowed audio versions from the library and listened while doing chores). That really heightened my appreciation and enhanced my understanding of what was going on. The plot has become VERY complex, and I can imagine someone who has not read the books fairly recently (or, at the very least, seen the previous films) becoming confused or missing the significance of what they were seeing. The acting was magnificent, but there were a couple of times I didn't understand what Rupert Grint (Ron) was saying because of his English accent and his tendency to mumble a bit. I had wondered where and how Part 1 would end. I think the filmmakers did a fantastic job. The ending definitely exceeded my expectations.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Harry Potter continues to deliver. Very dark, maybe scary for little ones, but quite possibly the best Potter movie yet. Imax is a complete waste of time , especially at Buckland Hills. Theater way too small for true Imax experience. Should have been shown in 3 D, apparently didn't translate whatever that means. Biggest complaint with show is that when I purchased tix, it was advertised as being in 3 D. Not happy to find no 3 D, FALSE ADVERTISING, really not cool.

As the series continues the story is a darker and darker tail. This is not for little children as it is a story of growing older and difficult choices. The movie does not quite have the same feeling as the book but very close. I came away totally enmeshed in the diificulties Harry and his friends where having. 2.5 hours passed very quickly and can't wait for the last movie in the series.

Why produce Pt 2 in 3D, but not Pt 1? Otherwise, production values were great! They did add things that were not in the book, when they should have included more details as Rowling wrote them . . . The story is incredible, and they did choose a good place for the cliff-hanger to end Pt 1. Recommended for age 10 and up.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 might be my favorite Harry Potter movie yet. I devoured each of the books and have read them multiple times. I very much enjoyed the first two Potter movies with their attention to the books and details, but have felt that the more recent movies have been too rushed, leaving out what I thought were very interesting smaller details and ideas.
I completely agree with one of the other reviews that this movie allowed for more character development but still had plenty of action. The most exciting for me was that the movie paid very close attention to the book. For the first time in a long, I didn't leave the theater thinking, "Was that movie supposed to based on the book I read? Completely different..."

Duh!! If you like Harry Potter you can't miss seeing this! Though like everyone else whose read the books- part two is going to be the show stopper! But you can't miss this one if you plan to see Part Two. Far and away the best of the series. As a card-carrying Pottterphile, who's read all the books at least twice, I have loved all the films. But this one is as different from the others as the book was. The actors have always been talented, but now they manifest maturity and subtlety I would not have expected. There is a terrific balance between slow, thoughtful character development sections and chair-gripping action sequences. I don't know how easy this movie would be to follow if one were not quite familiar with the series, but frankly that doesn't really concern me.
Production values, as usual, are the very highest. The cinematography seems quite extraordinary to me and, of course, the mood of increasing dread is reflected in the color pallette. The music is superb and augments the emotional feeling of each scene. Even knowing where the plot was going, I found much of the film deliciously scary. I can't imagine that anyone would find it suitable for children younger than teen-aged, but what do I know about kids these days?
All in all, this film is quite wonderful. It was thrilling and touching, funny and tragic and all in all, thoroughly satisfying. I was ready to sit through it again as soon as it was over.

Everyone in our party thought this was one of the best movies since the first two. We are avid HP fans. We have read the books and listen and re-listen to the amazing books on tape. The first two movies are still my favorites because of their magic, awesome Dumbledore, and accuracy, but Yates got this one right for the most part. You also get to see a lot of character development take place vs. action, which is different than the other movies. Thanks for bringing the elves back! :) Can't wait for p.2!

Though the children are growing, they're still kids. But the struggles with coming adulthood are nearer in this darker than previous Potter movie. Not a movie for young children as some of the scenes are quite intense. Clearly by design, the young viewing audience must mature with the characters, over the years. As other reviewers have shared, I too miss the fun and surprises of Hogwarts. Yet, outside of the protection of the school and school's masters, the danger feels more real. Technically, cinematically, the attention to detail again pulls us in and captivates. Bravo! The magic continues!! See it in IMAX.

Really good movie. Don't want to give anything away but I have to say (and this shouldn't be a surprise with the title) but it seems to end rather abruptly. This makes the whole movie feel more of a setup much like Matrix 2 was to Matrix 3 rather than Empire Strikes Back was to Return of the Jedi. In the end, it wasn't made to be a stand alone movie and it's not. All that being said, I thought it was an extremely well made movie that makes me want to get in line today for the finale!

I have read the seventh book multiple times now, and it is most definitely my favorite in the series. This movie was beautifully made. The stunning visual effects throughout the movie helps you to really feel the emotions of the characters. As it fits well with the book, there is a very somber tone throughout the entire movie, with a few very intense action scenes to keep your attention through the long playtime of two and a half hours.
Sadly, i missed the 6th movie coming out, and haven't gotten around to watching it. The first installment of the 7th movie however has made me want to watch the 6th very badly.
