The movie in and of itself is a solid piece of work with a crazy cliff hanger ending. This is, of course, due to it being the first part of the 7th Harry Potter book we all know and love.
As far as sticking to the book, it did well in a general sense. All the events are there, though slightly modified. I won't be spoiling any surprises, but I approve of most of the changes. They modify things from the book that couldn't be represented well in the movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

DH was one of the best HP movies so far. The pace was good and the director at least tried to stay true to the book
Of course things had to be shortened or cut for time, but the story suffered for some of it. The kids "on the run" time felt like a week or so instead of the months it took in the book. And there was almost no lead up to their breaking into the ministry. It just seemed like they got a wild hair and did it with no plan.
This does not mean that the movie was bad, quite the opposite and the maturity of the actors really shows. It will most definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. But for those purists out there who think it should be exactly like the book, you may be disappointed. If you are not a HP fan, you will be lost. For everyone else, IT WILL BE GREAT!

I loved this movie. I'm glad they got rid of some of the things that bothered me about the last movies. EX. what the spell stupefy does. Only down side is you have to forget Harry and gang should be 17 years old during this movie. Overall, its a great movie, a must see.

By far the best Potter movie yet, they stayed true to the book only leaving out some minor details that most fans can survive without the small bits they did leave out. I am very eager for the next installment but I plan on visiting the theatres a couple more times before this Potter leaves.

Although I didn't hate Deathly Hallows like I loathed the adaptation of Half Blood Prince, there are still some big problems with Kloves screenwriting and Yates' direction.
First, I understand that there is no way to put onto film what Rowling created in her books. And, I am quite happy that Hallows was split into two movies; it deserves the additional screen time. However, I have two major issues that make me, overall, disappointed in the film.
One: why does Kloves add scenes that were not needed (the Harry/Hermione dance sequence). We understand that Harry and Hermione are the siblings each never had, we understand that sometimes when it seems you are at your darkest hour you need to smile, laugh and even dance a little. We didn't need to see that on film. And, we didn't need the director to have the actors act it as if there was some romantic feelings bubbling to the surface. We needed to see the Kreacher back story. We needed to see the story that surrounded the radio.
Which brings me to my biggest complaint about Yates. He seems to elude to all sorts of plot points then either didn't follow through by actually shooting them or left them on the cutting room floor. For instance, the radio became an issue that was focused on but the actual Potter Watch reports that gave Harry hope were never introduced.
And, at the very beginning of the movie Tonks seem to be about ready to announce she was pregnant but was cut off by Moody. Fine, I understand that her pregnancy may have been cut for length sake but don't set something up and leave it hanging. It made the movie feel disjointed and confusing for people that aren't very familiar with the books.
I could go on, the Dumbledore backstory, Skeeter's book: Dumbledore's family, with Auntie Muriel eluding to Harry not really knowing Dumbledore and then no follow through; Wormtail's silver hand knocking about but NOT strangling him ...
What I did like is the fine acting by the entire cast. Rupert Grint is by far the best actor of the three title actors, always has been. David O'Hara is always great and sure can wear a suit. And, I can't wait to see Neville kick some butt. Herein lies my final complaint, I really would have liked to see more of the fine actors, Julie Waters, John Hurt, and the Phelps twins. But then, where would Kloves and Yates put that stupid dance scene? Where it belongs, in the garbage.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The movie gave some good information and had some high points. However, overall it dragged on a bit. I'd compare this to The Fellowship of the Ring, good but needed 2 and 3 to make it great. Hopefully, part 2 elevates this one. Anyone saying this is the best yet is living a "hype" dream. Take it from someone who can give an objective opinion when setting expectations for this film.

The very best Harry Potter film to date, and just as we are preparing to say farewell to a group of characters we have come to appreciate, if not adore. The IMAX version is worth the extra money. After being wrapped up in the story for 2½ hours, I watched as the credits rolled and found myself thinking .... there is only one more movie to see ... and we are all going to miss Harry Potter.

I had the good fortune to see the Deathly Hallows on a regular screen, then on IMAX. The movie holds up quite well in both formats, but the IMAX version had a much better sound mix and the clarity was noticeably improved.
The first hour is terrific; the second hour+ is all the 'on the run' camping and hiking (if you recall from the book) and it really slows down the pacing. Not bad, just a real change in momentum - as is the story line at this point. The cliffhanger was perfect (and I will not reveal this to spoil anyone reading this review).
All I add say is you HAVE TO KNOW the prior movies OR all the books to enjoy DH. Anyone walking in to see DH for their first Potter experience will be lost.
Also, to parents --- keep the under 10 year olds at home. The PG rating is misleading and will give the young ones a hard time. This is not a cheerful movie by any means. It is dark! Read the book!
Lastly >>> go see the Deathly Hallows.

This is essentially a war movie complete with terrifying battle scenes, heart breaking casualties and the constant overwhelming fight for survival. It's beautifully shot and manages to keep your heart pounding and your eyes wide open. I do not recommend this for small children. It's got a completely different feel from the first movies and may be confusing for those who have not read the book. My family loved it.

There was no need to make this movie in 2 parts. For no reason the whole is going horribly slow. Its like they made a movie from only one small paragraph of the book. I am a big fan of all the harry potter movies. But this one was just big disappointment. I believe they have left the whole story for next part.

I read somewhere on a fansite people were not exactly happy with the choice of director for this movie. I don't know what they were thinking. The movie was excellent, especially viewing it in IMAX. It made me realize I have to read the book again as I was entertained even though I had a vague recollection of some parts. It did seem to drag for a little towards the end, but it got going with another intense action scene. It ended on the perfect note to let you know that part two is going to be amazing.
I took my 12 year old daughter and was telling her that one could tell this movie was supposed to be in 3D; I'm glad it wasn't. Parents might want to think twice about kids under 9. Just like the books, it doesn't spare reality and the prospect of death.
The action scenes were excellent and it is amazing to see the characters grow onscreen as they have in the books. Even though we know what happens, we can't wait for the second part.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Don't walk, run to the nearest IMAX if you are a Harry Potter fan and see this movie. Everything about it is fantastic - special effects, acting, adaptation of the original story and cinematography. It has a much different feel to it than many of the other films much like the book had a different feel. Make a point to go - you won't regret it. This is some of the best that Hollywood has to offer.

The movie was suspenseful, with good acting and good effects throughout, though it would have been more difficult for people to follow that had not read the book. Some elements to tie all the details together were missing.
The ending was terrible. While developing a movie portraying the full book would have been longer, aka Lord of the Rings, it would have been much better. People in our packed IMAX theater were sorely disappointed. What appears to have been a money-making move, rather than a decision based on strong writing principles, made this movie much less powerful than all the others. I loved all the others and always go the first day of the shows.... and this particular movie did not stand up to the others because of the poorly planned ending.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
