I loved the original 1950s movie as well as the 1982 re-make by John Carpenter. This movie was enjoyable and the special affects were excellent however the film lacked the depth and suspense that the first Carpenter movie provided. The characters in the Prequel were bland and we failed to feel any kind of connection with them as I did with the characters in the first Carpenter film. We are also left hanging on what happens to one of the main characters which I found a bit empty. The end scenes fit very nicely into the beginning of the 1982 film. All in all I would wait until it comes out on cable. It’s not a must see on the big screen.

I saw the 1982 version when I was ten years old because I bought the video game that came out in 2002 because I thought it looked cool just going around killing monsters, I had no idea it could take over people and look like regular people. Anyways about the new movie, it is definitely the prequel as it shows basically an extended beginning of the 1982 version at the end. When I saw the 1982 version I was terrified, sweating and inside the cushions of my cousin's sofa. Needless to say I didn't play the game after that :). I expected the new movie to not be as good because of the computer animation (Like I thought the robot t-rex's in the first two Jurassic Park's were more realistic than in the third with CGI), but this movie surprised me, creeped me out, and had my heart jumping with in anticipation. I imagine I will be afraid of all living things for awhile again lol. If you haven't seen the 1982 version, see this first (it is the prequel) then buy the 1982 one on bluray or something as it's just as scary. By the way they might not make a sequel movie as the game is supposedly a sequel (was too afraid to play it at the time but I might sometime soon). I heard from my dad that the 1950's version didn't really ever show the monster just people being terrified. That doesn't sound very scary to me but who knows, I still have nightmares occasionally from the 1982 version, now this new one might have given me memories for new nightmares. All in all I made this review to tell info that doesn't spoil the movies too much but to tell you my opinion on it being scary (worked on me but someone I saw it with was alright which I didn't understand it was so threateningly creepy). And I don't know why but I looked on wikipedia, and the films are based off a book called "Who Goes There" by John Wood Campbell that I might read as books usually bore me besides Harry Potter. Alright that's all the "The Thing" info I have to offer without spoiling too much, now go see them unless you're a real young kid you might have nightmares for a long time.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Thing: Had I not seen the 1982 Kurt Russell version of the of the original 1950 movie The Thing From Another World, it would have been a better movie. However, having seen that version, it was just more of the same. I really liked the 1950 version best. Monsters taking over somebody else’s body in human form is getting really old. You’d think that somebody could be more creative and think of something new. But, as prequels go, it was pretty good. The story goes back to when the creature was first found, which pre-dates the 1982 movie. It fills in some blanks and relates back to the 1982 movie at the end. If you have nothing better to do, go see it. If you really want to see a good movie, rent the original 1950 DVD. My guess is that some of you didn’t know that James Arness (Matt Dillon of Gunsmoke fame) played the role of The Thing in the original version!) I gave the current movie 3 stars, or 3.7 out of 10.

Maybe it's because I saw the original, but I don't think this prequel was very suspenseful. They kinda give away a lot too quickly, and then don't explain certain things as well as the original did. The tie to the beginning of Carpenter's film that was shown during the credits was very good. The "Thing" itself looked incredible, and its appearance rung true to the original. It was disturbing to watch, but in a very entertaining way!

I thought it was fantastic what John Carpenter did with his version of the movie back in 1982. I had a lot of reservations seeing this movie thinking it was a remake of that movie. In my opinion, there’s no way to make the version Kurt Russell played in any better. That was fantastic in every way! However, this IS a prequel and connected SUPERBLY to John Carpenter’s version. Very, very smart what the writers did with this. It answered a lot of questions that opened in the John Carpenter version. I just can’t say how much I enjoyed this movie. Well done, John Campbell, Eric Heisserer, and Matthijs van Heijningen.

Of course, it cannot be nearly as good as the Kurt Russell version because that one was just unbelievable, but I thought it stood it's ground pretty well. I enjoyed learning about the Norwegian scientists that originally found the thing, but I don't think it really felt like it happened before the other one. There was nothing about it that really made it feel like they were in the 80s, so it felt a little out of place to me. I also didn't like the way they portrayed the thing compared to the 80s one. I would really like this movie, if I didn't have the original to compare it to.

Yes, you know the plot. Yes, you know where the scary parts are supposed to be, Yes, you know the aliens' creepy abilities....yet...
The movie still scares and creeps the hell out of you. The Thing was very scary to me and i saw the 1982 version 10 times. The way everyone became suspicious of each other, especially when the 2 men came back from surviving the helicopter crash with... no scars.
This is an excellent movie for its category 'Alien Horror'. So if you want love story...get the Titantic, if you want horror...Get 'The Thing', I promise you that your girlfriend will be forced to hold your hand.

I liked this movie. It took advantage of the information from the 1982 movie and from The Thing game that came later. You can even recognize some of the map layout from that wasn't in the original. The special effects were there and the movie still had its spookiness to some regard. The acting is what it is. The leading lady wasn't strong enough. She was too nice. That was the directors fault. She didn't do bad. She just wasn't as strong as the lead character in the 1982 version. There was no sense of urgency there. Overall though the movie held together quite well so I didn't feel like I wasted any money and alot of people will want to see the original. The original thing is the stuff of legend so you know they had alot to live up to. Some of the things this movie did right were the in the ending so don't leave when the credits start rolling.

I am a HUGE fan of The Thing. I was so excited to see this latest version. Maybe that was the problem. I had great expectations. The only thing scary was the anxiety that was created by the soundtrack. NOTHING exceptional about the alien's special effects. I can think of 2 other movies, off the top of my head, where the creature bared a striking resemblance. They had a chance to make a moment... and they dropped the ball. Sign

The story is one we all know, but it's told a little differently. Visual effects were OK, and when first exposed I thought "The Thing" was a pretty awesome creature. But as the movie progressed, "The Thing" became pretty goofy in some sequences. Like others have said, there were a few shock sequences that made you jump some. I wouldn't call the movie scary, but it did keep you interested. I wouldn't recommend it for young kids, or screaming women like the one that sat next to me in the theater.
In summary, it's nothing to get excited about, but if you have nothing better to do, it's an entertaining couple of hours.

When I went to see this, I had pretty low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. The movie kept my attention and had just enough gore to make me smile. How can something that crash-landed in Antarctica over 100,000 years ago still be alive? And that's just the beginning of the implausibilities that you'll get hit with in this movie. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the implausible, just as long as the writer/director took the time to present it to me in an entertaining matter -- that's not the case in this mess of a movie. It also bothered me that the Thing was so easy to kill with fire. I would've expected a bit more resilience from something that could regenerate after having been frozen for over 100,000 years! This movie can't even be called a guilty pleasure. Just do yourself a favorite and skip it entirely.

Thirty years ago Carpenter's unleashed his singular masterpiece, but left us with some questions. Not the least of which was what had happened to the Norwegian camp. He offered several clues that revealed their tragic fate and thirty years later Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. has answered that question in more detail and in the process manages to pose of his own. Some people would argue that a prequel lacks any suspense since the ending is already foretold. This is particularly true in the case of "The Thing". But that shouldn't (or won't) stop fans from watching the tragedy unfold. The story begins with the Norwegians making the discovery of the century and enlisting the help of two American scientists. Unfortunately, the specimen revives and escapes, unleashing a fight for survival that for the stronger species. Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character quickly asserts herself as the voice of scientific reason among chauvinitic protest's. She quickly deduces what the thing is and what it does. She even discovers an interesting weakness that inspires a unique test akin to Macready's blood test in Carpenter's film. As in the previous film, the thing jumps from one host to another in it's attempt to escape the frozen Antartic wasteland, pitting everyone against each other as to who might be human and who might be the thing. The biggest difference between this film and the previous fim are the special effects. Carpenter relied mostly on pratical creature effects as well as some stop motion animation while this film takes advantage of present CG effects. This by no means should be taken as a commentary that the prequel is superior to Carpenter's classic in any way. I would argue that had Carpenter had access to present CG technology, he would've used it on his own film. Fans of seeing this film tie in with the previous film including Ennio Morricone's haunting score at the end. Fans should see this film not as a threat to Carpenter's film but as a companion. In fact, I bet many raced home to rewatch "The Thing(1982)" after watching "The Thing(2011). I did.

What do you get when you try to improve on genius? Regardless of the premise of the moive, "The Thing," certain things just can't be duplicated. I remember seeing the John Carpenter version in a theater full of 8people and thinking that this was a milestone in movie history. The idea of what the brain cannot comprehend or calculate is truly what scares us all and the Carpenter version had no shortage of this. The idea of horror was not realized in the so-called "prequel". Granted, I goto movies to escape the grinds and misconceptions life will bring, and I did indeed escape, but I was unable to immerse into my 'inner Arctic regions' with the new version. The potential of having characters that we knew NOTHING about in the first movie, save for acouple of panicked Norwegian helicopter fellas, was inspirational to me. Where did it all begin? Having almost 30years to comeup with answers to these questions, seemed to me, to be an allowable timeframe to construct ideas and storylines. Nope. Just, nope. There are holes that do not get filled with alien slime that leaves you to question. The special effects/CGi were of a grand scale, but comparing them to the non-CGi1982 version of the similar? It's not even a close race. 1982 wins by an Arctic mile. Winstead plays a decent character lead as our female heroin, but there were no remarkable developments in anyone's character through the entire film. Nothing notable. No dialogue that will be remembered. The movie was nearly a carbon copy of ideas and nothing original was seen. The movie at face-value is entertaining, but fans of the Carpenter version, such as myself will be for the most part, disappointed. The ties-in's to the original come together in a unique way and that keeps me in a 3-star frame of mind. If you wanted to await a blu-ray version of this, you can. It's good enough to watch it again. But please Hollywood? We have enough 'things' we dont need. Let's not destroy the sacred and release yet another version of this movie. Thanks.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I love the way it tied in with the John Carpenter's version starring Kurt Russell, it was a perfect prequel. Nicely done, great monster movie for October.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Thing was good. When compared to the other two versions, it is not better. It is worth seeing because it unveils at least one aspect of these movies not seen before. The prequel aspect of it is very well done.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Not a bad movie, but the ending threw me for a loop, Typical good scares and some laughs, but did not add anything to the original which was way better. If you got nothing better else to do and want to see some cool creature effects check this out. Otherwise wait for the video..
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Was done well. And the CG was good but was to easy to predict. Would rather see 1982 version in theater again than this one.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A satisfyingly tense desert-island thriller -- just without the desert island. Riveting horror, brilliant premise and fascinating drama, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is first-rate keeping a cool, logical lead. First, you should watch 1982's "The Thing," which is still one of the most suspenseful and frightening movies ever made. Then, the new version is worth checking out, too. Hell actually does freeze over.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
