If there were ever doubts about the range and the talents of Javier Bardem, the film Biutiful shatters them. While this film is flawed in places - usually due to leaps in logic - the masterful and emotional performance of Bardem more than compensates. The movie follows the last weeks in the life of a low-level criminal as he tries to create some kind of legacy for his two children and his addicted, bi-polar estranged wife. He does not have much to work with in the limited days left to him and the pressure mounts, bad decisions lead to worse events and the world closes in. At the end he is virtually alone, out of time and options and his last act is to simply show his love to his daughter. The triumph of the character study is in Bardem's complete ownership of the character. Bardem is an A-one class actor and this work fortifies that truth. Not a light, uplifting tale, but Biutiful, none-the-less, is a tale worthy of telling - thanks to Javier Bardem. Bravo!

Biutiful has a very complicated story, all revolving around the main character, Uxbal. He has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and needs to tie up the loose ends of his life. Uxbal is taking care of his two children, ages 10 and 7; his unreliable ex-wife is a bipolar party girl; he is involved with illegal merchandise sales; and he and his brother supply construction sites with illegal Chinese immigrant workers. As if this weren't enough, he also has yet another job: he receives messages from people who have recently passed on, and is sought out by families who want reassurance about their loved ones. The film is deeply emotional, very intense, and Bardem is riveting, in a tour-de-force role. He certainly deserves his recent Oscar nomination! The film is lengthy, at two and half hours, allowing each of the areas of Uxbal's life to have some sense of closure, but there are many disturbing images and jolting events that make this film difficult to watch yet compelling. Recommended, but for adults only. Subtitling is well-done and appropriate.

I went to see Javier Bardem. From the reviews that I read about the film, I had no idea of the depressing nature of this film. I found it to be very "gritty", intense and depressing and too long at 2 and 1/2 hours. Bardem was excellent as were all the characters in the film, but even though the acting was wonderful, the film content was way too much to watch sometimes.

First off if you love the Twilight movies, Die Hard movies this movie is not for you (or 80% of american movie going public) this is a very serious movie for only astute/artistic movie goers. Most people who see this movie probably will hate this but if you have any appreciation for movie making in purest form (a la Kubrick, Scorcese, Fellini) you will appreciate the true beauty of Biutiful. Bardem shines like a dying supernova (no pun intended; and he will win best actor award no doubt), and this without a doubt is Inarritu's best film (will win best foreign movie film as well). This movie in all honesty most likely needs to be seen more than once to truly take in and you will not feel indifferent about this movie: you will either hate it or love it. No inbetween

Familial dysfunction amid a fractured economic system. People living at the extreme edge of their society, coping with day to day life, and the choices, and consequences, thereof, of their actions. Javier is at his usual excellent acting best. A typically long foreign film. I liked "Love in the time of Cholera" better than this film, but I recommend this movie because of the tragic nature of it.

I well-acted but grim movie with many ironies. The lead Uxbal lives beyond the fringes of the law. He hires illegal aliens to make counterfeit merchandise in Barcelona, but he is protective towards them. His estranged wife has lost control of her life; he can't stand her behavior but he still feels some love for her and is too decent to be violent with her. He loves his children but doesn't set such a good example for them. Much is bleak, and tragic, too. An unusual story, well-told, a bit long.
