The film begins and ends with the same scene and is like a wedding ring, a perfect circle and timeless. The story is about a man who is living outside the norms of society but with all the morality rarely seen in it. Javier Bardem is once again excellent in this very powerful but reserved role. He is a man who feels compelled to help those around him, although at times he is also willing to take advantage. And time is not on his side. When this results in worse and worse situations leading to tragedy he is left guilt ridden and empty except for his loyalty to his children and those who he promised to take care of. Its a very dark story but filled with the redemptive circle of a father's love. Powerful and well crafted, but sad. In Spanish with English subtitles.

An uncanny performance by Bardem. Though this is an extremely sad story, depressing even, it is Bardem who leads us into the reality of such a heartbreaking tale. If you get the chance to see this film don't miss it. Inarritu is one of the few great directors working today. This film is amazingly well thought out. From the details in sound, images, music, and story - with the performances to make this an all time great film. The load is placed on the capable shoulders of Bardem but the rest of the cast is incredible. I believe an award should go to not only Javier Bardem but also Maricel Álvarez, who plays his wife. She is a marvel. Go see it.

Biutiful shows the underbelly of Barcelona with graphic shocking detail. Beautifully acted, and Inarritu is masterful, but the ugliness starts to feed on itself. Two many subplots to subplots, muddled ideas about the afterworld, and going back twice over graphic stuff to rub our nose in it as if that didn't happen the first time. The movie is disturbing as intended, but would be stronger and less an assault if it were 30 minutes shorter.

Beautifully made movie. The acting, cinematography, and soundtrack were terrific. I was totally pulled into the story, which was complex and emotional.
Giving this 4 stars instead of 5 because it drags with sadness after awhile. See it - just don't expect many light moments. Just when you think it can't get worse for Javier and his loved ones, it does! but there are some touching acts of human kindness, and it ends on a strangely somewhat positive note. p.s. the little boy playing Javier's son was wonderful!

A movie that strips away at the fake romanticism and glamor that so many movies portray as real live. This is real life Barcelona - poverty, mental illness, slave labor, african immigrants who prefer this low level of survival to no survival in their african country, yet all the while humanity and human strivings continue - a will to live, to be a good parent, to provide for one's children, survival love. Bardem plays a small-time Barcelona criminal (Uxbal) with high moral values. He's raising two kids on his own because his ex is an alcoholic who "wakes up with a different man every morning." This movie has many, many subplots, including one involving a Chinese business man who imports workers for a sweat-shop; another friend of his sells drugs and black-market merchandise. This is not the ritzy Barcelona we tourists have visited. Instead, you get an underground and dangerous Barcelona that is home to many immigrants and people who have to go to tremendous lengths to survive. All is compounded by the fact that the main character, Uxbal, has late-stage cancer and only has a couple of months to live. It's not upbeat, so I cannot recommend it for all. Those who dare to see it will be rewarded with great acting, directing, and rich subject matter.

From the first moment, I knew this was not the movie for me. Movies that are real are great when they tell a story that is worth telling. Not to say that this wasn't worth telling but it was the manner in which it was told, for me anyway, was not noteworthy. To make a movie long to tell a story is also fine, but when some ( if not most) of the shots just show detail that doesn't move the story forward is just the director enjoying directing, not telling the story. Javier was brilliant and was the only redeeming part of this movie. I hope he does win an award.

I was fortunate enough to see an advanced screening last night which included a Q&A with Javier Bardem after the movie. It was truly an amazing experience!
Javier Bardem delivered another Oscar-worthy performance; in fact, I can’t imagine anyone giving a better, heartfelt performance in the Best Actor category. The movie is very deep, dark, & depressing, it’s real life!
Javier admitted this was a very challenging roll & was worried he wouldn’t deliver what the director expected for the role. Well, after seeing this movie, you’ll agree that Javier delivered the most natural, seemingly effortless performance that was so real & passionate you’ll feel like you’re eavesdropping on his character’s life.
In addition to Javier’s amazing performance, you have to give credit to the director, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, for telling a story that’s so real yet almost surreal. The performances by many of the first time non-actors required the skill of a great director who took “real” people who never acted & achieved wonderful “performances” by the entire cast. Bravo!
As Javier says “I don’t believe in God, I believe in Al Pacino,” well I have to say “I believe in Javier Bardem.” He’s a world class talent, one of the best actors around & a charming, gracious, funny, warm, passionate, caring human being.

I found myself sobbing through a good part of this movie. I couldn't believe how much it makes you reflect on your own mortality. It touched me so deeply that the pain was excrutiating. I hope everyone sees this movie because as painful as it is to experience, it is also a biutiful experience. When the movie finished Javier Bardem came out for a Q&A session. First he gave me so much pain with the movie then he gave me one of the greatest hugs i've had in my entire life after the movie. I told him that i had just lost my little brother 20 days earier and was so hurt it was unbearable. He held me and grabbed my shoulder and looked into my eyes and said "Oh no, 20 days ago? I am so sorry, so, so, sorry. I know how hard this is but thank you so much for coming and being here." His voice cracked as he is truly and deeply a very sensitive man. I walked away feeling loved and appreciated by the star himself. This movie will blanket you with biutiful Bardem.

This is a soulful film that is very rewarding. Javier Bardem delivers a beautiful perfomance. The audience is taken on a journey through grief and clumsy redemption with a protagonist that is flawed and raw with the knowledge that he must leave his children and is not prepared. I highly recommend this film to those who want to see serious filmmaking and don't demand the happy Hollywood ending.

Inarritu's Biutiful exceeded my expectations beautifully, which he always seems to do. This is a film which touches on difficult, painful themes that are part of why life is beautiful and sacred.
The acting is simply superb. The cast, which includes a number of individuals who are not professional actors, revealed emotional depth and authenticity that just blew me away. The photography is exquisite and the soundtrack is perfect.
It's not an easy film to watch. What it is, though, is a deep and heart-felt tribute to humanity and the essential connections between people that make life meaningful and worth living.
