It's not a bad movie, but it wasn't really great either.
I have no quibbles with the performances--McAvoy and Fassbender gave of their best, selling a script that wasn't good enough for them. Scenes were taken from the superhero cookie cutter--the training montage in particular felt forced. The action scenes were all crisp and well choreographed, though.
The biggest complaint I had was the obsessive need that Hollywood prequels have to connect ALL the dots between the prequel and its chronological successors. It left the last fifteen minutes of the movie feeling forced, from Moira's "You're not G-men, you're X-Men!" line, to Raven joining the dark side just after she saw the dark side shoot her brother, to snarky little asides like "Next I'll go bald!" Yes, we get it, you're Patrick Stewart in the future, move on.
It was better than X3 and Wolverine, and if it weren't for the acute prequelitis, I'd probably have ranked it higher. Either way, a decent addition to the X-canon.

I am a huge comic book buff and though I wish ever little detail could be made into a visually stunning piece of art as so many movies are. I know this cannot always happen. However, I feel that every effort made in this movie did just that. I feel the character development and allowing us to feel for the character will help audience member that aren't avid fans of the X-men franchise accept it. I feel that this movie has made the older generation happy by giving us something we have dreamt of for years and it gives younger viewers a new adaptation of the story that they can relate to.

While I had some issues with continuality involving Beast, the telepath blocking helmet and Miora (I don't want to give anything away so just leave it as that). The movie was amazing. I have now seen it twice and it was just as enjoyable as the first time maybe even more so, since there are a lot of winks to the audience that are fans of the X-Men series. This movie was so much better than the last two X-Men movies and its a close second to X-Men 2. Only disappointment was the Emma Frost character because it wasn’t as developed. Two enthusiastic thumbs up! Can't wait for the next installment.

Being a big fan of the comics I wasn't initially enthralled by the news that the actual X-Men first class wasn't all in this film. Once I discovered the talent they were throwing into this film with their actors and the director however, my hopes were raised a bit.
I'd call this movie the "thinking-man's X-Men film" in that the intention was obviously to get the audience far more involved in the character than has ever happened before in an X-film. Michael Fassbender's performance as the man who would be Magneto is brilliant. I know he's gotten a lot of hype but honestly none of it is exaggerated. He gives a pulp villain an amount of emotional gravity that isn't expected in a summer action film. The rest of the cast (with the exception of January Jones, who doesn't do a terrible job, but doesn't seem particularly "in" her character) acquits themselves equally well, although Fassbender really has the meatiest role. It's a delight to see Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique after her incredible turn in Winter's Bone.
The film used what was right about the first 2 X-Men films and ditched the rest. Those who have seen the original X-films will be excited for some excellent references in this film. There were a few audible cheers in the audience during the screening I went to when these showed up, I haven't heard/felt this sort of enthusiasm for an X-Men film since the surprise ending scene of Alkalai lake in X-Men 2, it's really fun!
Going back to the action I mentioned earlier- I felt like all of the set pieces were both spectacle and well-considered. Unlike the travesty that was X-Men 3, this film while full of thought is also full of action in good measure and the animation work and CGI worked well in tandem with the stories and actors. All of the action feels very satisfying and the powers of the mutants feel like they should, instead of feeling limited in scope because of a budget.
Can't wait to pick this up on Blu-ray!

It seems that some people are born with certain superpowers and can develop them as they get older; some for good and some for evil. These powers include bending metal, reading minds, and even controlling the muscles of other people. With that premise begins the plot. I stuck around for a while, but just wasn't interested in the trials and tribulations of people born with superpowers. Obviously, though, this is of interest to most of the other reviewers. So while I wouldn't recommend the movie to friends of mine who prefer reality-based films, those who can uncritically suspend reality for two hours or more might enjoy it.

This a great addition to the franchise. I thought the film did a good job exploring the relationship between Charles (Prof X) and Erik (Magneto). And Kevin Bacon was a great choice as the heavy.
If you're one of those people (like me) who likes to have everything fit together neatly, don't bother -- they don't. Some of the events in First Class don't quite mesh with the earlier X-Men movies. Also, the humans vs. mutants conflict is a bit oversimplified; but these are minor quibbles. If you're an X-Men or comic book fan looking for guilt-free entertainment, check it out.

I anticipated this one to be the best one of all X-MEN sagas. They certainly did not disappoint me. It provided a strong story line, great acting, breathtaking CG, and music! Thank you for sticking Wolverine in the scene real quick. That was a nice touch! All X-MEN fanatics and new comers will be enjoying this movie. It is the best X-MEN of all, in my opinion.
Now I know the birth and secret of the Magneto's helmet. Movie also explained how professor X ended up being in a wheel chair. That CIA agent, not so pretty looking and not so smart either ruins my Professor X's legs. Good casting for dumb looking female CIA agent. I must say Rose Byrne was a miscast. James McAvoy (Charles Xavier, Professor X), Michael Fassenbender (Erik Lensherr Magneto), and Jennifer Lawrence (Raven)'s actings were brilliant, brilliant!!!
Greatest summer blockbuster. Two thumbs up and five stars!

Loved it! Wonderful story, excellent characterizations, quite a few laughs and incredible action - this film has it all! Being a fan of the comic since I was a kid, I look forward to any X-Men films and this one definitely does not disappoint. A must-see!

The movie was definitely entertaining and exciting. Well worth the watch. I just wish when movie studios decide to make a “Marvel Comic” movie that they adhere to the actual facts and timelines. I don’t understand the need for the movie makers to rewrite the “Marvel Universe” at their whims. There were so many facts, truths and events that where bent or just plan out broken. X-men, first class, were: Professor X, Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Beast and Iceman. Not: Professor X, Magneto, Mystique, Beast, Banshee, Darwin, Havok.

High marks for creating really likeable characters. Michael Fassbender was fantastic, as was James McEvoy. Equally unlikeable was Kevin Bacon - really evil, I thought he did a great job as the villain. Some of the scenes were a little hard to believe in - for instance Prof X changed his mind a little to easily when it came to keeping 'the kids' out of the fight. Nevertheless Erik's single-minded determination for revenge juxtaposed to Charles' understanding and compassionate approach to all humanity kept me in this movie to the very end. Worth seeing.

Considering how deplorable many super-hero origin films are, I went into this one with concerns. I needn't have worried. 'First Class' delivers not just a great story--and for multiple characters!--but a fun, thrilling ride. Truthfully, I had to manage my expectations for this film given X-Men: The Last Stand was the last real X-film released, but First Class was good! I loved the plot of the movie, I loved the fact it wasn't set in any time period we've already seen in an X-film, and the effects were great!
Lately, the last few new releases to theatres have been good, but not good enough to make me want to pay movie theatre admission to see it again -- X-Men: First Class is the first movie this summer that I want to go back and see again. I'm a huge X-fan (and Marvel Comics fan), so I generally know how the story goes... but this film threw a few twists at me I wasn't wholly prepared for, and they were great.
I think my only criticism so far is the portrayal of Emma Frost. The effects for her diamond skin were better in the Wolverine movie and the character never donned the accent in the movie. But, like I said, overall, this was a great movie. I consider X2 to be my favorite; First Class is now my second favorite ;)

I've liked all of the X-Men films. This prequel made a tricky task thoroughly enjoyable. James McAvoy is a star to watch. It has a crisp look, the CG was superb & I found the back story on these many characters, fascinating.

The special effect in the movie were good, just too few and far between. I also thought the movie made the characters look a little hokie. The middle of the movie was just dull and too strung out.

I went to this movie with grown men who can talk about X-Men as if they were family. I have never seen any other X-Men film, nor have I read the comics.
I LOVED THIS FILM!!!! (except for the issues below)
1-True, the script was totally formula, but it was done so well, I didn't care. Effects were really good, but more than that, the character development and acting were top notch. I actually cared about the mutants and their story. "Mutant and Proud" was WAY too cheesy though.
2-why did the camera pan to the black mutant when someone asked the group, "you don't want to be a slave?" UGGHHH! really?
3-why did the black mutant die first?! UGGGGH! come on!

X-Men: First Class: It’s great to see a movie done this well that goes back and explains the origin of a very popular series. It was successfully done in the Batman series and the Star Trek series, and I believe it was successfully done again here in X-Men as well. It always takes a little adjusting time to adapt to new faces for old familiar characters. However, the acting was very well done. And, there was plenty of suspense and action. If you are an X-Men fan, this is a MUST SEE. If you just like Science Fiction, you will not be disappointed. Go see it! I rate it 4 stars, or 8 out of 10. There is no snippet scene at the end of the credits.

Xcellent movie in terms of Sci-Fi action. Best ever? Arguable. In terms of chronology, not quite flawless. The third Xmen showed Xavier and Magneto together when they met Jean Grey; in this movie, not even a whisper about her. (Maybe Magneto and Professor X reunite later on, briefly?)

We enjoyed this movie immensely. Good story line, made you care about the characters, lots of action. Kept our interest throughout. Good acting by everyone. If you like action movies, you should go see this.

X-Men: First Class had very good pacing and I liked the story. The actors did a very good job, the director also did well in my opinion, and the effects were well done as well.
The only three things that I did not especially like: 1- The whole "Mutant and Proud" thing was far too cheezy and just ruined several parts of the movie. 2- There's no little clip after the credits. I think that kind of thing is just expected for action hero movies (especially Marvel). 3- From the first three movies I thought they said Magneto and Professor Xavier built Cerebro together. Well, in this movie don't and I didn't really feel that this prequel matched up with the other three as far as continuity goes other than bringing back some of the actors. But hey, I think they used the same mansion.
