Pixar has crafted a tale of pride and defiance, and then takes it to its logical conclusion showing the damage pride can cause relationships. Its not quite the way the previews market it. Its better. There's humor, heart, and a message especially, but not exclusively, for girls. The story is well told and the animation is simply excellent. Its great entertainment for the whole family.

We took our Grand Daughters to see this movie and they loved it along with their Grand Parents. I myself am a huge Disney/Pixar fan. I enjoy all of their movies.

My boy and I went. We laughed. At the end I did the typical Mumm thing and cried. To my surprise so did the 10 yr old boy. Although he denies it. No self respecting boy would admit to this. We told Dad just a few things, enough to tease his interest, like this is really a guy movie in which a girl is the coolest thing and respect her parents and loves her 3 tsunami like brothers...He said wait don't tell me any more I'm gonna see it with the both of you - AGAIN.

The movie was a really great story. Great for all ages, but prepare the young ones--it is real scary for the ones under 7 I would think--the bears are very life like!! Too bad the theater's speakers were cranked up too loud and warped and crackled all the loudest points of the movie!!!

I personally liked it, now it wasn't my favorite movie in the world, obviously, not even my favorite animated film (which is How To Train Your Dragon or Lion King by the way). But I did enjoy it I thought it was funny, had a good message, and I thought the animations were extraordinary, honestly. Voice acting was good although it was sometimes difficult to hear, at least for me. It was a little weird, and like magical, I guess I can say, but that's about all I have to say about that. Overall it was a pretty good movie, and it was worth watching.

Brave has been recieving a lot of unwantonly harsh critisism from people. It has been called "unimaginative" that it had "more to offer" conceptually, and was "dissapointing."

Don't believe everything you read people. When people say that something, "lacks story," in a book, it means too much time is spent on scenery description and not enough on character development, if it's a film however, usually it's just a veiled accusation that so-and-so finds the story to be "cliche" or (and this is my biggest pet peeve) "formulaic."

Super-8 was "formulaic" for many. Newsflash, formulas are around because they work. Abslutely Brave was not the finest of Pixar movies. It was an A-, all things considered. But in today's industry where most of the films they crunch out are D's and C's, an A- animated film is pretty impressive.

While many were looking for "story" in some plot twist, they were missing the true narrative that the film was telling, for the story was within the familial relationships. One trailer for Brave said it perfectly, "No Matter What Age You LIve In...Family is King." Merida's relationship with her mother, Eleanor's own relationship with her husband, these are the crux of the film.

You also have a badass Scottish princess who fights bears, what more do you want from our Pixar friends?!

I know I'm taking the unpopular opinion among the geeks of the world, but I loved Brave absolutly, and I think it deserves to proudly take its place among the ranks of fantastic Pixar films.

Pros well paced, great story, great actors, fantastic characters, relevant themes

This was a great movie! I was pleasantly surprised, it turned out to be more than I thought. I took my daughter to see it and we really bonded over the storyline.

Selfish brat uses magic to try to get her way and then blames others...what a crock! Occult theme throughout entire movie!
Walked out of movie most of way through since I got tired of the overbearing magic agenda of Hollywood. If I would have had youngsters with me I would have walked out sooner.
Miss the days when movies portrayed personal responsibililty and personal achievement.

Since I love Pixar films, Toy Story, Monsters Inc, etc, I always look forward to viewing a new one. I should have known when the short cartoon La Luna was subpar at the beginning that something was wrong. The story line was weak, I cared nothing about the characters and the ending was not very well thought out. The jokes were sparse and unfunny. Did Pixar JUST make this movie to have something new out? That was exactly how it felt. I was disappointed and felt let down by the people at Pixar. Please try harder next time!!!!

As a mother I want movies and shows for my daughter that are entertaining for her but subtly teach her a lesson also. This movie is a great depiction of the mother-daughter relationship and how it evolves as they age. It's a great lesson on listening and acceptance. And it was hilarious

Unlike many of its predecessors, Brave isn't a retelling of a classic fairy tale or an adaptation of a popular children's novel. The movie follows Princess Merida, a headstrong Scottish lass, as she struggles to find her destiny in a rugged land of colorful warriors and hidden magic.

While Brave is not historically accurate, I'm glad that actual Scottish and British actors were used for its voice cast. Kelli Macdonald (Gosford Park, No Country For Old Men) is an appealing Merida, and comedian Billy Connolly is her boisterous father King Fergus. Emma Thompson plays the controlling Queen Elinor, and Julie Walters is an old witch who grants Merida an ill-advised wish.

Robbie Coltrane, Kevin McKidd, and Craig Ferguson are other Scots in Brave's cast, and of course, Cheers and Pixar alumnus John Ratzenberger is also aurally present. Brave's character designs are cartoonish but manage not to be too jarring against the realistic landscapes. As an archery fan, I enjoyed the tournament scene, even if most of it had already been shown in commercials and trailers.

The script and plot are a bit more straightforward than other Disney flicks, but I appreciated the fact that the movie is somewhat less sentimental — or emotionally manipulative — than other Pixar films (see Up). Some reviews focus on Merida as a stronger young woman than past Disney princesses, but what about Mulan?

Others have noted that most of Pixar's pics have been more boy-oriented, such as Toy Story and Cars, but Brave actually has more in common with recent movies from Dreamworks, such as How To Train Your Dragon or Kung-Fu Panda. Brave also bears a strong resemblance to Dragon Hunters and Brother Bear, but isn't as tragic in tone as Sintel. In addition, Brave's Celtic knotwork and mythic medieval setting reminded me of the delightful Secret of Kells.

I was pleased to see Brave tackle mother-daughter relationships, since much folklore and more recent movies tend to focus on father-son or father-daughter ones. Merida's suitors and three younger brothers are also a source of some amusement.

Overall, I'd give Brave, which is rated PG for some violent scenes, three out of five stars, an 8 out of 10, or a B+. Brave might not go down as a classic, but it's still solid family entertainment. (See a linked version of this review and more at Gene's Worlds.)

This is a wonderful movie. It's not the movie that I expected, based on the trailers, but it's a great movie about a mother and a daughter. Merida (the daughter) and Elinor (the mother) couldn't be more different. Merida is fierce and stubborn and very much her father's daughter, testing her strength and courage in feats of uncommon bravery; Elinor is the poised, elegant queen who can stop a quarrel with a glance and a word. They're both strong women, but in very different ways. Consequently, they don't always understand each other. And Elinor's efforts to train Merida for her future position as queen, which Merida sees as an attempt to turn her into a copy of Elinor herself, only exacerbate the situation.

Things come to a head when Elinor tries to arrange Merida's betrothal; by clan law, she has to marry the eldest son of one of the leaders of the other three clans. Merida's protests and attempts to find a loophole only make things worse, and after a terrible argument, Merida flees the castle, only to stumble on the cottage of a witch (who is rather like the female version of Billy Crystal in The Princess Bride). Merida begs the witch for a spell to change her mother...only to learn too late that she should have been more specific. The rest of the movie focuses on change, physical, mental and emotional; how fear and the refusal to listen can block change and can have deadly consequences; and on the notion that if you want to change your fate, you might have to change yourself as well.

The animation is gorgeous; the landscape actually looks like part s of Scotland that are familiar to me. Castle Dunbloch bears a strong resemblance to Bothwell Castle in Lanarkshire. Angus, Merida's horse is a Clydesdale--the modern horse closest to the massive warhorses of the Middle Ages, bred for size and strength so that they could carry men in heavy armor. Mention must be made, too, of Mor'du, the ten-foot-tall demon bear with fiery red eyes. He radiates menace. And the climatic battle scene with him is awesome.

Go see this movie. Go see it NOW.

I love how Disney has made a story about the mother - daughter relationship.

I think this is appropriate for an older child. The message is not really for a three or four year old. I think pre-teens and even teens will love this.

This movie was so great. It is great for adults and kids. I saw this with my sister and we laughed so loud and hard and even cried a bit. I couldn;t believe it's a kids movie. We came with high expectations from years of classic Disney films we entered the theater, but alas we were disappointed. The quality of the animation was as always excellent, but the story was mediocre at best. Also missed were the classic Disney songs that were such an important aspect of so many films. This movie was so cute and funny!!! We loved the whole thing....It really pulls on your mother-daughter heart strings...Everything about it made us feel what they were feeling, great job!!! The only thing I would say is it is NOT for children under 8 years old...Some of the ending scenes were very intense for kids and there were a lot of young kids in their mommy's laps...I know my daughter was...but even though she was scared during parts she really loved the movie and talks about it a lot :D

Took my 6 year old granddaughter & 4 year old grandson to see the movie. We all really enjoyed it. My granddaughter was a little scared by some of the scenes with the bears, but otherwise it was great. I really like that the heroine was in charge of her own fate, she didn't need "Prince Charming" to help her! That will help to empower this generation of little girls.

Great movie but WAY too scary for my 6yr old! Good grief Toy Story 3 and this one gave my daughter nightmares! If the 3D thing is so popular then you need to make a 2D version that's not so in your face. I'm sure those bears looked awesome in 3D. I'm so glad we didn't though she wouldn't go to bed for weeks!

The trailers never really gave you a full idea about the movie and from what I did get I thought that the main character would go off on her own. Instead she ended up going on a very strange journey with her Mom. Overall a great story for families!

The movie was visually stunning and has a great positive message - especially for little girls today. A touch scary in a couple of places, but overall fun and exciting.

Pros well paced, great story, great actors, positive message
