This movie was like a plane that started off sooooo slow and just seemed to never take off. After waiting and waiting for a turning point in the plot (if there was one), we found ourselves hoping the plane would soon land so that we could leave. We wanted so badly for this movie to impress us...the previews sucked us in looking for an adventure with a meaningful storyline. We convinced our 10 yr old son to see this instead of the standard animated movie, but found ourselves regretting that choice. $40 and two hours of our lives we won't ever get back...that's the lasting impression we got from this film. Big disappointment.

This movie is one of the best in a long time: From the story line and plot development to the character casting, direction, and special effects, it is a masterful work of art. The emotions run the gamut from funny to suspenseful to emotional. My only negative comment is that the 3D does little to enhance the move experience. The story is strong and the chase scenes dramatic enough with out it.

From the moment the movie started, the cinematography captivated me. It was beautiful, detailed, colorful, and touching. The boy who played Hugo was very talented and adorable. The characters were amusing and delightful. The plot was intriguing and stimulating. The cinematography was absolutely beautiful and made the entire movie a spectacular experience. One of the most beautiful and enjoyable movies I have seen in a long time. Worth every penny in 3D IMAX

Thought the film was wonderful...but TOTALLY ruined for me because of the 3D glasses.....WAY TO DARK!!! It ruined it for my husband and also people around us were complaining. This is the only film that this ever happened to. If you want to see this film...go see it WITHOUT the glasses.

Hugo is a singularly wonderful film. Go see it and you will carry it with you for the rest of your life. It is the gentlest of love letters. It's a love letter to magic. It's a love letter to films. It's a love letter to dreams.
The story – actually, stories – draw you in without much dialog, and that’s when you remember that this used to be the magic of movies, telling your stories with visuals and music. Fitting then that this is a monument to the earliest days of filmmaking, before there was sound, before there were movie stars.
Every performance is marvelous, from the main roles to the supporting players. The 3-D visuals are stunning, and the words as well as the pictures are sheer poetry. This is a film to see many times, inspiring, beautiful, and the kind of art that makes you ache at the wonder of it.

This is a beautiful movie. It's worth seeing on a big screen for the visual impact. The big 'but' is that I kept waiting for the drama, for the threat to the characters that would pull me out of my more objective appreciation of the beauty of the movie. It never happened to me. Maybe because you aren't sure what the central dilemma is. Who is the movie really about?

This is a sensational movie, not necessarily for children but more for adults who will find fascination with a true homage to the beginnings of movie making. This is no kiddie fairy tale, but rather an exciting adventure for truly thoughtful older children and then the rest of us.

I thought Hugo was a wonderful feel good move for the whole family. The story line, although I thought I could predict, threw me into another direction and I loved it! The young actors played well with the veteran/seasoned actors we all know. I left the theater feeling warm and ready for a joyous season. The 3D was not necessary, but I'm not a big fan of that anyway.

I think this movie stayed as true to the book as possible and given that the book it is a Caldecott winner, every parent should have their children read and see this movie. It is very sophisticated because that is the subject matter of the book. They will get history of French culture and architecture from the early 1900s as well as characters with deep feelings and intentions. It is a rare opportunity to have your children see something and be inspired particurly by an ending that shows how every child can make a difference. We often get caught up in the ugly pop culture here in the US where the biggest hit is a 2 star Adam Sandler movie. While there is a place for that comedym there is also a place for this. It will balance you children and open their eyes. Give this a chance, regardless of other reviews, if you want you children to experience something that is totally unique, warm and touching. They will use their brains a bit, and isn't that what we all want. As an adult, GO - it is just as good. Don't waste money on 3D - not needed.

My daughter, 17, and I just returned from seeing the film. Had very high hopes! Turned out to be one of the most boring movies either of us have seen in recent memory. Slow, slow, slow. Acting was fine. But waiting two hours for something, anything, to happen was grueling. Wouldn't even watch this one on DVD.

A delightful movie that evokes an emotional response from the audience. The visuals were exceptional. Ben Kingsley was phenomenal and the rest of the cast performed well. An all around delight - the visual effects in 3D and art direction should win an Oscar. The story was first class too with a childlike sense of wonder and perspective toward silly or wounded adults. An homage to the early films of the silent era and magic, as well as to the age of mechanical precision and the gilded age, its a film worth seeing - and preserving.

A visual delight for classic film fans and Rube Goldberg admirers. The pacing is a bit awkward at time, but there's payoff in the art direction with its visual/historical detail. The toyshop, for instance, looks exactly as it did in real life. Wonderful cast, some beautiful direction from Scorsese (albeit with some bizarre lighting decisions) without his usual machine gunnery.

Our family loves the book about Hugo Cabret and could not wait to see the movie. Though we are not fans of 3D, we chose to see what Martin Scorese would with it and were not disappointed. The opening shot through the train station is breathtaking. The color palette which substitutes for the the book's black and white imagery is lush and somehow very french. The child stars are terrific actors supported by a cast of excellent adults, in particular Sasha Baron Cohen. A great family movie. Worked for the kids and grown ups in our group. Suspenseful story, beautiful imagery. Gorgeous music.

We saw Hugo in 3D last night -- which I would highly recommend. My daughter read the book a couple of years ago and loved it. I have to say that this book made into a movie didn't disappoint us. The visual effects are first rate -- everything is muted in color and very easy to see and take in. The details are amazing. You can see why Martin Scorsese is a master at movie making. Hugo is a beautiful story that takes you on a journey into how our lives are affected by others. Hugo is not a fast paced movie, but that works for this story. The movie could have been shortened a little bit -- 2.5 hrs. is long -- but most of the "extra time" was taken up by visual shots -- well worth the extra time.
I would recommend this movie for older children -- above 10 -- because of the length/pace and storyline. It's a must see for the holiday season.

The 3D effects are super, however, the movie is very slow, with not too many action scenes. It may be hard for a small child to sit through. The storyline was charming, the child star wasn't, in my opinion. I wouldn't recommend this movie to a friend simply because it's the 3D that makes it, but the price of the 3D isn't worth seeing it.

This film is beautifully made, and has all the signs that it was made with a lot of attention to details like the settings, the costumes, the characters (Dickensian almost), even the color tones of the film - muted and slightly browned to feel like a classic rather than a harsh colors of a thriller. I took 4 boys between 9 & 12, and all of them endorsed it, although none with the sort of cheer as - say - Deathly Hallows Pt 2. I think the movie really made the boys think and watch & appreciate the story-telling of a master like Scorcese (although of course they'd have no clue who the man is!) My reservation (my wife concurs) was that it was a bit on the slow moving side, and we both felt it could have been edited down by at least 15-20 minutes. Overall, a lovely, lyrical story, told beautifully on screen.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
