Excellent casting! Lots of Harry Potter favorites and Sacha Baron Cohen showed us a character with a heart for a change. Such great time period work and the chemistry of the characters to each other made the storyline stand out. Even the minor characters had stories of their own. Gather up the kids, Grandma and Grandpa and go see this as a family. See it in 3D if you can.

What's not to love??? This movie shows children and adults the history of the movie and what happens to artists when trends change and their work goes out of fashion. It subtly illustrates the horror of World War 1 for for France and what it did to the average French Person. Finally, it illustrates how innocence, wonder and a child's courage can transform lives. There are so many layers in this movie that it's great for Adults and children over the age of 7. It is too complex for younger children and they get bored.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

While this is a movie that any child could see, I would not classify it as a children's movie, or even a family movie. To me, that demotes the film to a lesser category. This film does not belong in a lesser category of anything! My husband, being a big Scorcese fan, wanted to see Hugo, I was just along for the ride, not really caring about seeing it and not expecting much. Instead, I was blown away. Scorcese's talent shines, this movie is a masterpiece in filming - and the story is wonderful, so are the actors. Since it was shot in 3D, it is meant to be seen in 3D if at all possible in your area. By all means, go! Take the kids if you have to, but go!

The preview was tantalizing but the movie is basically a film history 101 class except in 3D. It doesn't deliver. It's Scorsese's very expensive homage to himself, and anyone else who shares his obsession with cinema history.

Hugo in 3D is a new classic in the family film genre. It makes complete sense that this is the kind of kid's film Scorsese would make with half of it being about Georges Melies (Ben Kinsley), the French film pioneer who invented cinematic special effects (Scorsese being a film historian and preservationist and all). The other half of the film being an Oliver Twist-like story (Scorsese loving a good hard-edged drama and all). Great fun!!!

Love this movie - a glorious homage to the silent films era & a paean to childhood wonder & imaginative creativity. I have been avoiding 3D movies because they give me a terrible headache afterwards. But the 3D version of this movie did no such thing. It seemed so natural! It runs like clockwork with every part serving its purpose beautifully. Nothing superfluous!

This is the best film yet by this prolific director. I was mesmerized by the colors, the cogs and wheels, the story and the silent movie clips. This is a must see for any movie history buff but it is also a pure sensual joy for any viewer 3D or not. Bravo!

I was skeptical about paying the extra $ to see this movie in 3D - I mean, it's not an action flick, right? Well, right it is...the 3D, that is. It is so very well done. I doubt that many PG movie attendees (the young set) will be able to sit through the story, but it is well worth it. In my ignorance, I didn't know the story of early movies, much less Georges Melies, but I thoroughly enjoyed the education. My 20 year old son that just graduated from a Digital Animation school gave this one high marks as well.

This movie reminds me of why I love to see good movies. Visually stunning, 3-D used without gimmickry, an interesting story that draws you in, and a surprise introduction to one of the true visionary pioneers of the French cinema. Scorcese lovingly shows us why he is a true master of the film process. If you don't like this movie, you probably belong in the Twilight audience.

This movie was horribly bad. Just another reason to not get tricked by the promos, ads, and big names. You keep waiting for something to happen in the movie but as it went on and on it was painfully obvious this one was not worth it. What was even more bad was that there was nothing 3D worthy in it as well. I fell for the fact that Scorsese's movies are good and he loses a lot of luster and allure with this one. What exactly was he trying to achieve was a mystery to me. I still am shaking my head. Save yourself some money and time and skip it even when it comes on TV.

Sorry folks - I love movies but this was such a slow movie both myself AND my date had a hard time staying awake. Way too slow. More like a family willie wonka fantasy movie. Sure I get the old film connection and the French set re-creations were beautiful but this does not make a great story or movie. The movie is over hyped, over marketed, and definately used the 3-D as a gimmick. 2D movies should work on their own. Thumbs down,

Keeping a long family tradition alive, my 9 y/o son and I go to matinees together nearly every week. Some weeks he's excited at the film, some weeks I am. This one had us both excited...and did not disappoint either of us!
This is, quite simply, a Brilliant, near-perfect film with remarkable performances from every (even minor) actor...and that it spanned the generations, even more so. This is Mr. Scorcese's finest film in quite some time, and that it's a family film is amazing. His grasp of what would entertain and engross kids and adults alike was stunning.
No pandering or talking down to the kids, no silly double-entendres to keep the adults happy. Just a straightforward, beautifully told story with enough twists and turns to [pleasantly] surprise everyone. And a poignant, happy ending, too!
We will see this again, and likely own it when it is released for home consumption. It will stand repeated viewings and, I'm sure, we will find new things to love each time we view it.
Bravo!!!!!

Watching the previews for this movie, I was expecting a story about a boy and his magical world ala Harry Potter or The Sourcerer's Apprentice. What you get is a sweet story about the early days of French Film making, mixed with an Oliver Twist, Orphen style story. I laughed at times, I cried at times. But The actual movie is day and night different from the previews.

Hugo is a little boy who lives in a train station. His father died and left him a mechanical boy that he's trying to fix. He also keeps the clocks running since his uncle passed away. We took a group of family ranging in age from 18 to 62 years, including two college students and a young teacher. We all loved the film. I think we all cried at the end, with smiles on our faces. Wonderful photography. Scorsese makes the 3D feel natural. Not overdone and in your face.
