I saw the movie with my 10 year old daughter and her 11 year old friend. The friend was bored to tears. My daughter was interested but when I asked her what the movie was about afterwards, she tried 3 times to articulate the plot, then said maybe she should read the book. Visually interesting, but would have been 10X better married to an interesting plot. Or a plot at all. The best part of the movie was that there was no one in the theater but the 3 of us and my daughter and her friend could move around and test out the 3-D in all the seats to kill the time.

The movie is a real contradiction - a heart warming story without a heart. I have tried hard to think about why the movie failed to make me care, I can think of two basic reasons - it is much too long and too slow, and there is so little character development that I didn't care about anyone.
This is a terrible waste of a fine cast. The best acting is done by the doberman. And the 3D is as almost always these days, irrelevant and gratuitous.
Given Scorcese's love of movies, this homage needed a soul.

This was a well done movie that kept my attention throughout. The acting was very good and Ben Kingsley did a great job. I thought the 3D was very effective and very immersive and was a great enhancement to the film. It really pulled me into the scenes and made for some stunning panoramic shots of Paris. It may have been just a tad long but overall I really enjoyed it.

It is so nice to watch a movie that has a script, an intellectual position, and a story to tell. I have no idea why Scorcese bothered with 3D as it doesn't add anything to the movie. Still, one of the best movies I have seen this year.

I thought this was a very well done movie, driven by a very clever and thoughtful story. However, I'm not sure why it had to be in 3-D, there really aren't that many action scenes, not much special effects, so it seemed to me the 3-D was superfluous.
But the wonderful, poignant plot is what drives this story--people off all ages will enjoy it, although it is a bit slow at certain points. I loved seeing the Orsay train station before it was converted to the gorgeous museum we know today, and the beautiful scenes of Paris of course were wonderful. I do think it should have been done in French, it was odd to hear British English while all the signage was in French, but I'm sure American audiences would not have been kind to subtitles, unfortunately, or heaven forbid, learn French!

Loved the sets, loved the story, loved the characters. Great acting. My only complaint was the length. It could have been shorter and still told the story. It would be hard for a child to sit through this and hold their attention. It did drag in sections. Overall my husband and I enjoyed it.

My husband looked forward with great anticipation to seeing this film and I was uncertain... could take it or leave it alone; however, turns out we both enjoyed the film. Wonderful cast, wonderful sets, wonderful story... that has lttle to do with the title character and much to do with the circumstances surrounding him (not giving away any more movie details). The movie was magical, touching and s-l-o-w. This film could have been 90 minutes long and achieved all it set out to do, including entertaining it's audience. I did see several people leave the theatre before the film ended and only 4 of us stayed to see the film credits. People left at the conclusion of the film, like they couldn't wait to be released from a celluloid prison. If you can see this film at a discounted matinee price, please do. If you have to pay for a full price ticket, save your money and wait for the title on Netflix.

If you love (a) books and (b) movies you cannot miss this. It has a sweetness rare in Scorsese's canon (ahem), but it is clearly a work of heart and art. The only drawback? Like so many theaters, AMC Phipps does not goose its lumens sufficiently to overcome the dimming effects of polarized 3-D glasses. But the 3-D in this movie is one of the rare cases where it actually enhances. Is it worth the upcharge? For once, yes. And the cast is uniformly excellent, especially the youngsters. You rarely see a flim maker grinding his axes (film restoration and salvation) so engagingly.

"Hugo" does not play out as the Disney-esque children's movie audiences have been trained to accept. Although the main character is a child, the story really focuses on an actual historical figure: pioneering filmmaker Georges Melies, the mystery that surrounds him, and Hugo's role within the mystery. This movie is one of those 'children's movies' that should be made more often: one that treats children as intellectually competent, and expects them to be sophisticated enough to understand and empathize with large emotional issues; one that utilizes a child's ability to learn and grow without the drama and supernatural unrealities of wizards or vampires or other cinematic foibles that dumb down and sugar coat typical children's cinema.
'Hugo' is a fictional tale surrounding the real historical figure of Georges Melies (to whom Sir Ben Kingsley is an uncanny likeness). Msr. Melies was a pioneer in early film and prolific creator of spectacular visual stories. Although the film does gloss over much of Msr. Melies's history (it fails to mention his first wife), this does not in any way detract from the film, and does provide an important reminder that our cinema would not be as it is today without visionaries like Melies. This is an excellent tale about Hugo, a child who, despite his personal tragedies and loss, and through his desire to 'fix things', resolves a great misfortune and helps to heal a great wound of Msr. Melies and bring himself closer to his own late and cherished father. All the while, he observes the interactions of the people around him, is instrumental in the redemption of the Station Master, makes a real friend, and learns the strength of his own mettle and even some impressive new vocabulary. Ultimately, this is a wonderful tale about the power of humanity, forgiveness, and love.
I rated this film only four stars for the following reasons: first, 3D. This film was *in*no*way* enhanced by the 'magic' of 3D. While I appreciate the 'magic' in relation to this tale about a true cinematic magician, I felt more distracted by the obnoxious glasses I had to wear (which gave me a headache) than amazed by the snowflakes falling or clockworks turning or steam rising. Second, the children's dialogue seemed incredibly disjointed. For example, when Hugo tells Isabelle to "give it back" (his father's notebook), instead of saying 'no' or 'why' as it would seem any normal child would, she instead asks 'why do you want it so badly?' - inappropriate in it's clinical structure and delivery. Finally, the overzealous omitting of what must have been much-needed character exposition from the book makes the movie feel rushed and under-developed. For example, in the last few minutes of the film, the Station Master (who has caught Hugo and will, as he has done with other delinquents, send him to the orphanage) blurts out that he was raised in an orphanage and did not need a family, so why should Hugo? This outburst explains so much of the Station Master's cruel behavior throughout the film, yet it comes so late in the movie that we do not have time to build up proper sympathy for him.
Despite these detractions, however, 'Hugo' is a wonderful family movie. It is clear that Scorsese is paying homage to one of the greatest film pioneers in history, and he includes lots of fun and wonderful footage from Melies's films. And in case there are any studio execs. out there who are certain that children won't enjoy a film unless there are lots of explosions and car chases and special effects that move at a frenetic pace, let me tell you about the dozen or so little girls who sat behind me, all between the ages of 8 and 12 years old, who laughed and giggled and gasped at all the 'old fashioned' movies, and who were thoroughly engaged all through the two 'Pixar-less' hours.

I liked the movie. I don't think that younger children would appreciate all the underlying stories in the movie. The boy who played Hugo did a good job. This movie is definitely more suited for adults and older children.

Based on the promos for this movie, I thought it would be fantasy laden. Instead, it was a very gripping, human story. I believe adults will probably enjoy this movie moreso than the children because of the historical references. Give it a try!

This one is a MUST-SEE !! Far better 3D than James Cameron's "Avatar" and has a very positive message on the subject of art. Definitely a MUST-SEE in 3D as well as in the theaters.
