Definitely worth seeing, but not necessarily in 3D. I am not a fan of 3D, but i went because i read you should see this in 3D. The effects are good if you like 3D, but i would save my money and eyes for the 2D version. As far as content, this is a children's movie, not an adult's. I heard that some (overprotective, in my opinion) parents didn't think it was appropriate for their children, but the film is told from a child's POV in a children's movie genre.

I loved the story. The cast was fabulous.
The 3D was marginal. Some of the 3D effects were enough to make me queasy. Many of the 3D effects were obviously done just because someone was playing with a new toy.
I suspect that in a couple of generations of the 3D technology it will be much better, but for now, you might be better off seeing the 2D version.

This was a wonderful movie with a beautiful story.I really did not have any idea what the story would be about when I chose to take my two grandsons age 6 and 4.I thought once it was started that they would not enjoy it but we went to the 3D imax theatre and they sat and watched without complaints so for them it was fascinating. I loved how the story lead me to think that Hugo was a grandson.

Hugo is a marvelous example of cinema storytelling that adeptly pays homage to the magic of filmmaking specifically and the indomitable power of the human spirit in general. The plot is as focused and economical as the machines that help tell the story, and the expert performances from all draw from an engaging fusion of sentiment and grit. Scorsese's ability to conjure up both poignancy and exuburance without approaching mawkishness is a joy. Without question, Hugo has been one of the best film-going experiences in my 61 years.

This movie starts out with an intriguing and captivating story, and then, just as the story is reaching its climax, we suddenly discover that there's an even deeper plot underneath. The movie is well made and well acted, and Asa Butterfield is completely believable as the young boy around whom the plot revolves. This is definitely a film you shouldn't miss!

Director Martin Scorsese decided to tap into the 3-D craze with a Harry Potter knock-off that simultaneously pays homage to Scorsese's father, who sent him "messages" early in his career as a film-maker, and to one of the fathers of motion pictures, Georges Melies, best known for a one-reeler about a trip to the moon. The result is a slow-moving, effects-heavy, child-centered, feel-good bit of nostalgia set in a Balzacian Paris in the 1930's. It was either this or football on a Sunday afternoon, and we chose this.
I remember 3-D when it came with red and green glasses in a cardboard frame. Then it was spooky. Now it just distorts spatial perceptions and is mildly bothersome. .
All of the characters in Hugo are too cute. The kids are too cute, of course, but so is the station gendarme with a stiff leg, who passes for a bad guy, the old lady with a tiny dog, assorted shopkeepers, the man who drives the train, and even an automaton that bears an uncanny resemblance to R2D2. If the characters are too cute, this must be a family film.
The homage to Melies, on the other hand, was fun. He grew out of a French vaudeville career, and his movies were fantasies ripe with costumed music hall dancers. It was enjoyable seeing him at work. Melies was played here, all too ponderously in his old age, by Ben Kingsley.
But the best part of the movie was two or three mild dirty jokes that presumably went over the heads of the intended core viewers. Scorsese always makes you laugh.

Not often these days do you find a movie that truly does what movies have always been designed to do that is to take you to another place. This movie does that in spades, both visually and with its story telling.
The 3-D in this movie isn't one of those gimmicky type of effect draws you see so often these days. Instead, it feels like it is an essential part of the movie. Almost like you'd be seeing only half the movie with out it. The cinematography in this movie, mixed with the 3-D effect is what cinema is all about, magical.
The story of course is also warm, endearing and will keep you under the spell, and charm of cinema magic as well. Don't miss this one if you can still find it near you.

An eccentric conjunction of 3 genres: the riveting aesthetic of steam punk, the sentimental but charming plot of Ratatouille, and the fascinating historical context of early silent film, Hugo reaches for more than it achieves but nonetheless conveys something of what it would have been like to see the first silent films. Being in 3D is irrelevant to its effect. Its star, Asa Butterfield, is remarkable, with his combination of reticence and transparency.

A nice attempt... but at what, I'm not sure.
While a fan of Scorsese, I was left wanting so much more from this film. At first it appeared to be a Dickensian tale of poverty with interesting characters, but then it rambled its way -- as if the writer lost interest -- to a love affair with film.
Sasha Baron Cohen did a lovely impersonation of Inspector Clouseau at times, and it probably would have been better to focus the tale entirely on the conflict between the orphan and his nemesis.... or between the boy and the toy shop owner as his nemesis. However, the script diluted the conflict and nemesis, and in Act 3, it became a different movie all together.
You won't feel cheated after the movie's over, but you also won't feel like you've seen a great film. And if you didn't know Martin Scorsese was behind it, you might wish the director well-needed luck in getting another mega-budgeted film.

Overall Hugo was a thought provoking movie with regard to the history of cinematography. In itself had playful wit tossed with a bit of intrigue as Hugo searches for answers to his father's death. In many ways it was also a history lesson weaving parts of the beginnings of the movie genere and how the war played into a demise of the classics.
The movie was detailed in its prsentation of the characters and the settings. Overall it was enjoyable.

This is a wonderful movie in every way. The world of the station where most of the film takes place is completely engrossing with a wonderful ensemble supporting cast. Visually, the film is visually stunning and magical. At the same time, the storytelling and acting is also excellent. It's rare that a film with this much epic set design and special effects achieves all of these qualities. The children who play the leads are particularly excellent, with complex, nuanced performances. It also has the quality of being about movies, paying homage to one of the forgotten geniuses of early cinema.

When seeing the previews, I was intrigued. Further, knowing that Martin Scorsese directed this film brought my husband & I to the theater. First of all you should see this in 3D, the 3D added a lot to the visual joy of the movie. It is very good 3D, not like a lot of the movies coming out in 3D now.
As to the story it's a very good and interesting story but it bogs down a bit in the middle. This movie could have benefited from some judicious editing to speed it up in the middle.
Once you get through the slow middle it picks up again and has a very satisfying ending. The movie is really an homage to filmmaking itself and how the imagination of movies enriches our lives. I agree with this and would say this movie also enriches our lives - just that it could have been a little less slow.
All in all I do recommend it but I wish I could have given it 5 stars. It cost us $16 per ticket to see this in 3D and for that price a movie really should rate 5 stars, to justify the high price.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I took my grandchildren to see Hugo. The story moved slowly it did not fully hold the attention of the three and five year old. The older children 9 and up enjoyed the picture. two of the adults found it a little slow for them as well. So I would hold it for the very young children and stick to the preteens.

Although promoted as a movie for children -- and many children will enjoy it -- it doesn't have the overwhelming continual visual/auditory excitement that dominates most non-Pixar kid films. So if you take young people, warn them that it builds slowly and is more committed to character than to wham-bam plotting. And adventure action addicted adults, too, will need to slow down and watch the meaning grow.
Scorsese started with the brilliant book by Brian Selznick which is more pictures than text, and so it is not surprising that his movie, too, has more pictures than words and is, in part at least, a powerful homage to the beginning of movies which were silent. But for all the pictorial brilliance of the film, what finally gets you are the people and their aspirations and needs for connection, for family, and for understanding of how the world works.
Go prepared for magic not for fireworks.

Martin Scorsese does 2 important things in this movie. First, he moves the use of 3D forward by integrating it more fully into the film than any previous film I have seen. He does not use it for cheap theatrics, he merely renders in 3D scenes that would be perceived as 3D in real life.
Second, he gives voice to an important point of theology. Theology addresses a few core issues: Who am I? Why am I here? How shall I live? Hugo expresses a clear understanding that all of us are here for a purpose -- that every one of us has a reason for living. He develops this from his understanding that every machine has a purpose -- something it was intended to do -- and he extends it to humans. This is an important insight.
The film then takes it a step further, arguing that just as a machine can be broken and become unable to fulfill its purpose, we humans too can become broken and unable to fulfill our purpose. Some of us, like Hugo, have as OUR purpose to be fixers -- to help others to be mended so that they can again fulfill their purpose in life. Again, this is deep theology and well worth pondering.
Having said all that, the film is also entertaining (at least for adults), has excellent production values, etc. All in all, a great film.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
