Everything about this film was mesmerizing. The scenery beautiful, the costumes gorgeous, the actors superb. The story itself is a fascinating peek into royal life. Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush were marvelous in their roles -- and so were the supporting actors. It was wonderful to see Helena Bonham-Carter, who usually plays the bad girl in many movies, portray a sweet and supportive wife -- although she did season what could have been a treacly portrayal with a nice sauce of wit and hauteur. Jennifer Ehle (who played Elizabeth Bennett opposite Colin Firth in "Pride & Prejudice") did a fine job as Lionel Logue's wife - the scene where she walks in her dining room and finds the Queen of England having tea at her table is just priceless. But Timothy Spall as Winston Churchill was just a caricature, as was Eve Best as Wallis Simpson, looking a bit too skinny and long in the tooth to have exerted such fascination over the prince-- who was convincingly played by Guy Pearce.
I agree with all the other reviews that noted the wit and humor of the film - there were many moments of laughter. And the costumes were beautiful. I LOVED that blue hat the queen wore! (And in fact, wasn't the Queen Mum known for her gorgeous hats?)

Great movie. Funny at times and very witty. Could be a must watch classic. I love how the characters portray their roles but i would like to see the synopsis of what happened when the main character was 5 years old that led to the stammer. In this way, it gives viewers the valuable lesson of how to prevent the predicament that he was experiencing. But the acting was awesome! The architectural detail of the scenes and cinematography is great. It is this kind that you would want to see more of the story, the triumph of how the King accomplished his insormountable dedication to lead his people despite his ailment and how he pulled it through because of the relentless effort of his friend. He gave honor to whom honor is due...despite lack of credentials and destractions.

Considering the limited nature of the subject material, the story that was built around it was excellent as well as brilliantly executed. The acting was wonderful, the cinematography was great. The King's Speech recounts the true story of how King George VI of England worked to overcome his frustrating speech stammar. The film contains a rounded portrait of the King and the time when he lived, and how difficult it was for him when he had to assume the throne by default, when his brother, Edward, abdicated to live with the woman he loved, American divorcee Wallis Simpson. George also had to deal with the looming threat of World War with Germany, as well as the inevitable fact that he would have to use the wireless (radio) to communicate with his people. Colin Firth gives a vivid, believable portrayal of a man struggling with his own human frailty, yet realizing that history has dealt him a hand with which he must deal. Firth truly deserves his Oscar nomination! He is ably supported by Helena Bonham Carter, as his loving and supportive spouse, and by Geoffrey Rush as the man who used his knowledge of theatrical elocution to help George overcome his demons and rise to the challenge of speaking to his people. (Note: Rush's character is not a speech therapist.) The story includes many important historical details, helping to flesh out the period, but the cinematography is a little murky, like a lesser HBO movie from the 90's. Its many Oscar nominations, especially Best Picture, are puzzling, since this is a great performance in a good movie, but one that would not be recommendable without Colin Firth. He alone elevates this film to Oscar worthy status. Without him, this would just be an interesting HBO movie.

Good story line. Sometimes funny sometimes touching. The cinematography and acting are great. I would have given it 5 stars, but it moves a tad slowly in places. However, well worth the ticket price. My husband and I both enjoyed it.

Reluctantly went along with my wife and am very pleased I did. Besides the great acting, casting, sets, etc. the pacing is just right and has more than expected wry humor.

I always enjoy a good and smart movie that depicts a certain time period. Could not imagine living through the WWII era, and they could have conveyed the urgency of the time a bit better, but this movie was in a word ...Great. It starts off a bit slow, but that gives you a sense of the affliction the main character was feeling. Helena Bonham Carter is known for her strange roles she has had, but she should be in many more movies. She is such a great actress. No she is not my favorite actress, but she is a great one for the diverse roles she has played through the years. I've not seen many movies with Jeffrey Rush, but he is such a versitile actor that he can play most anything. So in review, starts slow, but well worth it and likely a Best Actor, Best Picture here.

What an amazing story and fabulous acting by all. Colin Firth is downright genius in his portrayal of King George and Helena Bonham Carter is understated but superb in her role as his supportive and caring wife. Geoffrey Rush is, of course, at his very best. You get everything a movie should have - humor, love, friendship, the human condition, sympathy, action, drama, family strife and power. Everything meshed together so well - I could have watched their friendship for another hour at least. Bravo and well done.

One of the lines spoken by the future King George VI was "When I ride in this car and look at ordinary people going about their lives I marvel at how little I know about them and how little they know about me." One of the sources of fascination of this movie is the look behind the scenes in the life of modern royalty. That life is based upon numerous anachronisms, some laughable. Be that as it may this movie succeeds in winning the audiences sympathy for the challenges the main characters face. The writing, acting, and direction were all superb. I recommend it highly.
