First & foremost it's entertaining as can be. So well acted and executed you can't help enjoying the story of the reluctant king confronting his public speaking stammering handicap. The development of George the Sixth's relationship with Lionel Lowell, his elocution teacher, is subtle and touching in that the King's childhood is brought out in the process. Terrific use of editing when we see the final speech given accompanied by the second movement of Beethoven's seventh symphony. Whole cast is fantastic - Geoffrey Rush in particular as Lowell is extremely nuanced. I don't have enough time to go over how this movie so totally hits the mark. IT'S JUST GREAT!

Kings Speech a movie above the standard fair offered today. Honest Story with honest actors keeping you afixed to the screen for the full presentation. Not with tech or photographic wizards but with a gripping story line backed with great work by all the actors. A closely factual account of the times in England just prior to world war two and the strugles of King George the 5th with his ablity to deliver the words to bring England into the second world war and lead them to victory. The director Tom Hooper did a superb effort in bring all actors together to portray a monent in time as it could have happened. I felt as though I was watching history unfold before me on the screen. The story being told from several point of view while focusing on a central point the soon to be strugle of the king of England to perserve the royal family and the relm it's self. Great Movie A must see for all. Leave the pop corn at the counter you won't remember to eat it.

This is not the kind of movie I would typically go to see. My usual fare is something with a lot of action, suspense and body parts...that being said...I couldn't take my eyes off of the screen! This movie was Amazing! All of the actors desreved Oscars...from Michael Gambon (King George V, who is also known as Professor Dumbledore) to Helena Bonham Carter (also of Harry Potter) to Geoffrey Rush to Colin Firth! A MUST See! A+!

I wanted to see this movie due to all the Oscar buzz. For a change, it was definitely worth the buzz. The entire cast was fantastic...now that I have seen Jeffrey Rush's performance, I think he should have received an Oscar as well as Colin Firth. This made the royal family seem very human which is not something you feel very often with headlines in the past few decades. Also, just a very good story about overcoming your difficulties to achieve your greatness.

This was one of the more enjoyable movies that I have seen in awhile. The acting was great, plot line was very simple, but it was a palpable experience and I felt it tackled several social issues that still exist today. You won't be disappointed.

Usually my movie preference is action and full of body counts. So when a friend offered to pay my way to this movie, who could say NO. I applauded at the movie's end. The acting was stellar, sets exquisite (Westminster Abbey), and costumes perfect. I see why it swept the Oscars. This movie took me out of my comfort zone, and brought me to another genre movie - historical biography. I will add it to my DVD collection when it becomes available.

I am still amazed how a movie with basically no plot and no suspense can be so gripping. Yet it is. I went with three people who had already seen it just a week before.
As a sidenote, I agree with the other reviewer's comments about movietickets.com It is annoying that you still have to stand in line, use your credit card and pay a fee on top of that. The only advantage - which is why I use it when I am going with a group - is that you can be sure ahead of time that you will have tickets and it will not be sold out.

Particularly notable for the sotto voce wit of the Duke of York. Wonderfully, painfully accurate portrayal of a very bright, tormented royal with severe social anxiety. The usual riffs of the buddy movie were well done; beautifully photographed, charmingly portrayed. Helena Bonham Carter's talents were wasted on a poorly fleshed out character. The penguin story was hilarious. Weakest moment was when everyone was clapping about the King's successful speech when, mostly likely, they were thinking about the war with the Nazis. I agree, Churchill's role was weak. Also, you never get a sense of the actual significance of a British King in the 1930's. The shallow, one-dimensional Edward, was a fine throw-away-foil

A brilliant story involving British royalty in a way that has relevance to the current British Queen Elizabeth, to the adbidication of Edward for Baltimore socialite Wallis Simpson, to WW II, to Hitler, as well as class boundaries, to the simple challenge public speaking, to leadership - all surrounding the rather remarkably vulnerable story of a central figure in the midst of those historic events about whom I personally knew nothing prior to seeing this film. And incredible in that it is true. This film just won the Oscar for Best Film a few days ago, and a colleague who is in the film-making biz recently told me it was the "best film" he'd "ever seen". So that was a lot to live up to. Well I don't know if it was the best film I personally have ever seen, but it was definitely excellent, and I can see why it won the Oscar. Not a chick flick, not a guy's adventure film. Just a fascinating film about a true story with interesting insights into history, engaging dialogue and intriguing character development. Highly recommended.

Saw it with my husband, who usually prefers guy flicks, and we both enjoyed it very much. Performances were spot on. Colin Firth's portrayal of a man who felt completely unfit to be king was heart-rending. Rush was wonderful as a caring teacher, who was patient and persevering, yet never subservient. I felt the whole experience gave me a flavor of what the times were like. I rather think we saw what a brave man George VI was. When such famous performers melt so completely into the character it is a wonderful thing to watch. I most heartily recommend seeing it. I definitely plan to add it to our video library.

I paid attention to this movie because it was historical, and it provides a view behind the scenes that a king is human and needs help like most of us. It provided much information on stuttering and the reasons for the affliction. The helper character was played as an honorable man who is a role model for all of us. The scenes at his home are quite delightful in showing the dignity of integrity.

This movie was inviting and captivating. I enjoyed it tremendously. The movie depicted the troubled life of a priviledged man and his family in their quest to hold up appearances to the public at large. We visited a time where so much was happening in society. I particularly enjoyed how a true friendship bloomed from a level of trustThe start just needed a dose of self-confidence. A belief in onesself to carry on. Go see the movie.

Excellent historical drama about the royal family in the years leading up to World War II. I always thought that Winston Churchill was the most dynamic British figure of this period, but this film made me realize that King George VI and his wife (later the Queen Mother) and daughters (one of whom became Queen Elizabeth) were also very important in reassuring the British world, which was huge at the time, what was at stake.

This movie is thoroughly enjoyable -- great acting, an uplifting and basically true story, and wonderful costumes and sets. It provides a fascinating glimpse into royal life, while humanizing the participants. It is always uplifting to watch someone overcome personal problems, and when that person is to become the king of England and a hero to his people during World War II, it is even more fascinating.

This is one of the rarest of movies: One where great context/atmosphere (e.g.superior costumes, cinematography, & set/design) meets almost perfect across the board performances. Usually, even a great movie doesn't have both aspects - this one does. Additionally, Colin Firth's performance was stunning. I found myself growing in amazement, during the film, as it unfolded. This movie didn't need overbearing music, techno-effects or action to be great. It is just a well-done movie from root to canopy.
