Do not be afraid to bring your children to this movie because there is very limited bad language, and not anything children 10 and above have not heard. You may want to discuss the use of some F-words and S-words in the context of the speech/emotional therapy sessions, but those scenes are very brief. The movie is quite involving, but you'll want to be able to explain a bit about the King/Queen of England being both the head of state and head of the Church of England; thus, King Edward could not marry a divorced woman.
Lots of quiet, human humor in the movie as well as impeccable performances by all actors. There are three actors in this film who were also in the 1995 Jane Austen classic film "Pride and Prejudice."
In sum, if you have a thoughtful child, do have them see the King's Speech, despite the R rating.

We expected this movie to be great and it did not disappoint (husband and I took it in for date night). Colin Firth was fantastic as many have mentioned, but I think Helena Bonham-Carter was marevellous as well. As the duchess then queen, she was nice but not too nice. :) Happen to have seen Room with a View within the past two weeks so it was a real time marker to see how she has matured. Geoffrey Rush was of course great. The intrafamily stuff was compelling. The only thing that grated a little for me was I thought the Geoffrey Rush/Colin Firth relationship was a little overplayed. Some scenes were fun (when he introduces the King to his wife it is priceless), but sometimes I felt it was one meaningful look too many. Overall thoroughly enjoyable.

This was an outstanding movie with superb acting. It was very interesting because it reveled an aspect of George VI that many Americans, including myself, did not know. It showed how an improbable person could influence the course of history in an asymmetrical manner.

Don't listen to the people who say this is middle brow tosh (ie Boston Globe). It's a terrific, engrossing, beautifully acted and very smart movie by the director who did the brilliant John Adams series. The guy knows from bringing historical figures to life, from creating beautiful sets, excellent screenwriting, and REMARKABLE acting. Not an off-note in the production. A real pleasure to watch.

Saw TKS last night with a potential to dislike it because I had very high expectations. But I loved TKS even more than I thought I would. The film is superbly written and directed, and compelling and believeable at every turn (save one, see below). But the real coup de grace are the performances and especially that of Colin Firth. Last year, I thought he deserved the statue for A Single Man, but this performance is even better. To stammer throughout the film in a way that is so credible is extraordinary all by itself, but Firth's performance is beautiful way beyond the stammer. He's surely one of the best actors working today. And the film manages to suck you in. With each stammer, you feel for the character. I could see those around me -- and I was doing it too -- leaning forward as if to try to help him get the words out. What a film, what a performance. Only small criticism -- and it's quite small -- is one scene in which the older brother breaks down at his father's bedside. It was poorly acted by Guy Pearce and rather unbelievable. But it was the sort of thing you'd never notice in an average film. It stuck out here only because every other moment of TKS is otherwise extraordinary.

We wanted to go as a family, but my 12-year-old was worried about the rating (R) (we've been burned before by PG movies marketed to kids). I ran into a "parental review" on-line, which was great and allayed any concerns. The rating probably stemmed from some scenes with foul language, and maybe that the characters smoked and drank (normal '30s behavior). That same 12-year-old loved the film.

I remember being at a Crosby, Stills & Nash concert in the summer of 1982. At the end of one of their acoustic guitar-centered songs, as all of us in the audience spontaneously rose to our feet for another in a series of ovations that evening, David Crosby held both his hands up in front of him, pointed them at each other, spread his fingers apart, and brought the hands together in a motion of gears meshing perfectly. That's how I would choose to praise this masterpiece of a film. When DAYLIGHT AGAIN was released & CSN announced their plans to tour in support of the album, those of us who love their music already KNEW it would be one hell of a concert...and that's exactly the feeling I got when previews to this film began showing up. Call it premature, if you will, but it's great knowing that my instincts were right this time. I mean, the star power...the director...the subject matter...how could it NOT be great?
Last night on the telly, during a commercial preview for the film, it was announced that TKS is already up for 7 Golden Globes, including best picture & actor. All I can say is, no surprise there. And watch out, come Oscar time. I'll be shocked to my core if it doesn't walk off with at least 4 statuettes.
There are still those cynical few on this planet who stubbornly & irrationally maintain that the movie industry ceased making quality cinema long ago. This jaw-droppingly astounding movie is the perfect choice in refuting such short-sighted points of view. You hear it a lot these days, but this is truly "not to be missed." Treat yourself & your loved ones & see for with your own eyes & ears what a prize among prizes this film is.

This charming film has it all. The royals and the commoners. War and peace. Love and friendship. But most importantly, it reminds us all that challenges can be overcome with humor, patience, and hard work.
The acting was impeccable. Emotions were nuanced with a turn of the cheek or a flick of the eye.
Expect to laugh, cry, and feel altogether better about your own trials and tribulations. Most interestlngly, find new sympathy for the Royal family and even the seemingly hard-nosed Queen Elizabeth.

This film was such a great surprise -- I expected it to be good, but it really was excellent, and has instantly become one of my favorites. It's funny, poignant and historic (in more ways than one) all at the same time. Incredible acting by all, but Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter really give stand-out performances. The movie, and all its actors, deserve, at a minimum, Oscar nods. I will be surprised if this movie doesn't take the awards season by storm.
Thank you for this incredible gem of a film!

Brilliant !! Funny, superb acting. Should definitely get Colin Firth an Oscar. Did not expect it to be so funny, yet very poignant. Did not know, until listened to NPR, that they waited 25 years to make it, until the Queen Mum had passed away. She did not want it made while she was still alive, as it would have been too painful for her. Worth the wait.! Do not miss this absolute gem of a film.

Obviously a minority opinion, but smarmy story of royalty finding help from a plebe. Did anyone else notice that if he just wore headphones for his speeches, the movie could have ended an hour ealier? Only Brit version of Hollywood could have done such an over the top damnation of Mrs. Simpson...

The buzz and accolades you've been hearing are well-deserved - this movie is stunning. Cautiously paced and well-plotted, it evokes drama without getting "too Hollywood."
The real strength is in the acting - Colin Firth gives his best performance to-date, Geoffrey Rush is the best we've seen since 'Shine' and Helena Bonham Carter exudes warmth behind a crisp exterior.

The movie is based on the true story of King George VI and how he battled his speech challenges. It was not a "feel good" Hollywood film which usually is phony . It is focuses on the two main characters, Bertie(King George VI) and Lionel Logue, Bertie's speech therapistand goes through their challenges and overcoming it. Wonderful performances by Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth. It is dramatic and humorous at the same time. You can feel the perseverance of both of the main characters. A movie among the tripe out there worth plucking down the admission price.
