I have to admit that I wasn't looking forward to going to this movie. My wife wanted to see it, so I politely agreed to go with her thinking I could probably catch a nap. After all, a movie about a speech therapist--how interesting could that be? I was very pleasantly surprised. The story line was engaging, there were some humorous moments (not laughable, just humorous), the actors were great, and I found myself awake and watching through the whole thing. The wife and I even had a long conversation about the film. So, if you are like I was, I would urge you to go. It's not action-packed, but it really is a good story. Just one lingering question in my mind--was that speech therapist a pirate before or after he was a speech therapist?

If the Motion Picture Academy were to give the Best Actor Oscar jointly to both Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush, I would have no problem with that whatsoever. There is no way to separate the excellence of one performance from the other. Just like the characters they play, one is not complete without the other. And Helena Bonham Carter continues to amaze me with the depth of her range. Great actors, great writing and a great story make for an excellent movie.

The right actors for the right parts make this a "must-see" movie. The casting is truly spot-on. Helena Bonham-Carter makes a wonderful job of the lady known to most Brits as "The Queen Mum", although the movie takes place long before that era. Her sensitivity to Colin Firth's "Bertie" is beautifully played, with that gentle touch of humor all too often lacking in any portrayal of Royals. Geoffrey Rush once again shows he can turn any character on a page into a believable flesh-and-blood person on screen. All of the secondary roles are well-played, and the attention to detail is obvious throughout the movie. Do not miss this one. We saw it as a family, and everyone enjoyed it...it even brought up some good conversations about the history of the period - not too many movies do that these days!

Outstanding piece of history with human touch. Makes you laugh and cry as you see Queen Elizabeth's Dad (Bertie) suddenly forced by his brother's abdication to become King George VI during the Age of Radio--when poor Bertie has a terrible stammer! An Australian speech therapist (Lionel) becomes one of Bertie's few friends and gets at the real causes of the problem. You watch the King overcome his own fears so a nation (and world) can overcome the fear of Nazi terror and take courageous action. Magnificent! The 'R' is for a very funny scene where Lionel gets Bertie to swear a blue streak as a technique to get the rest of his language to flow. But the movie is really about excellent values--courage, love, country, family, the ups and downs of friendship without resorting to violence. A must for all ages above 8.

This is a marvelous film which impressed me as much as "The Queen" (with Helen Mirren) did several years ago. The story of the personal struggle of King George VI to overcome his speech impediment is inspiring and touching on so many levels, not the least of which is realizing that his first real friendship may have been with his speech therapist. Geoffrey Rush (who plays the therapist) was the executive producer of the film, and gives an excellent, restrained performance, while Colin Firth playing the king amazes one with his adoption of mannerisms and speech patterns which must be almost as difficult to adopt for an actor as they are for the afflicted to shed in reality. Able support from Helena Bonham-Carter (as Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother), Jennifer Ehle (as the therapist's wife), Derek Jacobi, Anthony Andrews, and many others highlights the superb screenplay. Those who are particularly interested in British and World War II history will find added interest above and beyond the essential personal story told here. This is truly a powerful experience I would not want to have missed.

My aging parents don't go out to the theater to see movies but a glowing review in our local paper piqued their interest in this film. I offered to chauffeur them so we all went and saw this. None of us were disappointed. This is an absolutely superb movie with a very well told story and the very best actors telling it. I cannot recommend it highly enough. And my parents were very glad they ventured out to the theater to see it.

This movie was intelligent, entertaining, amusing, and factually accurate. I had no problems with the dialog (I miss a lot on many movies from England). Oscar worthy performances from both Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush. I really cared about the characters as they were portrayed.
