I seldom go to R rated movies because of the language, I hate hearing Christ's name used in vain. The cussing I can handle when used sparingly such as in this movie. So often, swearing or cussing is used when it is entirely unrelated to anything about the plot. However, in this movie the word s*** and f*** seemed to fit.

I usually wait to see movies when they are released to DVD - and then buy them. This one I could not wait for and, boy, am I glad I went to see it. Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush are fantastic! This film was a beautiful depiction of healing through intimacy and community. The stammering brought on by King George Vi's abuse as a child was overcome by someone who cared enough about him to overlook his imperfection and would patiently wait, encourage, and correct him.
The performances were spot on, and the cinematography was so well done.
A great experience from start to finish. RUN do not walk to see this wonderful film

Director, Tom Hooper, has a gift for historical drama AND for the intimate art of the character portrait. The latter, of course, is critical if one is to transcend the epic panoramas that too often devour the directors, actors and writers who would sit upon the throne of historicity.
In "John Adams" he directed Paul Giamatti to one of the best performances of his career.
In "The King's Speech" Hooper's mastery of character development is more evident than ever. Reprising his "John Adams" partnership with cinematographer, Danny Cohen, his nuanced understanding of the privileged eye of the camera is apparent - the visual frame driven by the characters' perspectives.
It doesn't hurt, of course, to have Colin Firth and Oscar Award-winner, Geoffrey Rush, who, after a long wait since "Shine", has found another role worthy of his sensitivity and range. His on-screen relationship with Firth, who's performance is a masterpiece of apropos understatement, offers a flawless example of the inner dramatic line.
Then there are a series of brilliantly-executed sub-plots; each emerging from the psychology of lovingly-drawn characters.
Guy Pearce's Edward VIII is a dizzy paramour, led and weakened too easily by his passions to the bed of Eve Best's Wallis Simpson. Best's portrayal, by the way, is the gem of the picture. She's a master of the personal gesture, sweeping into and out of her scenes in a manner that imbues the abdication sub-plot with a critical believability. And Pearce, in a nomination-worthy performance, demonstrates a profound depth and range with his Edward.
Range being a hallmark of Hooper's cast, Helena Bonham Carter offers a seminar in the subject with her portrayal of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, whose wifely ministrations to Firth's George VI offer a subtle portrait of a powerful real-life character.
All the characters in this picture, excepting perhaps Simpson, are drawn empathetically. Hooper and Cohen bring us face-to-face and soul-to-soul, painting David Seidler's (Another World, Quest for Camelot) masterfully-crafted script by way of patient character studies.
The historical back-drop for this picture, England during the Battle of Britain, has been beautifully-rendered by production designer, Eve Stewart, who's work you'll remember from "Topsy-Turvy" and who partnered with Hooper once before on "Elizabeth I."
Taken as a whole, "The King's Speech" is historical drama at its best. Characters that allow us to walk and talk in their epoque by way of settings that are natural to us - as if we'd been their contemporaries. Personal, empathetically-told stories which interlock in causal relationships that give rise to great events. And a genuine sense of historical weight that arises, as a matter of course, from the lives of the characters.

The acting was amazing and I was very moved by the story, but I felt it took a while to get going. I watch a lot of foreign and independent films, so I'm not someone who needs a lot of action in a story to keep me interested, so it's not that. Maybe it just wasn't my cup of tea or I just wasn't in the mood for slow last night. I just finished watching a DVD at home of a movie called "Until Human Voices Wake Us," which also had Helena Bonham Carter and Guy Pearce, but it was made in 1993. The story is also slow, but it's slow in the way of dreams and memories and it felt more poignant to me. Probably just a thematic preference versus a judgment call on the quality of either movie. Either way, great actors.

As a clinical speech pathologist, I was anxious to view this film. Seldom can anyone realistically portray a person who has disfluency issues. I was vastly impressed by the acting in this film. Colin Firth was able to make every viewer squirm in his seat as he acted his way through the difficulties that stuttering bestows on it's victims. The unorthadox treatment that this king undertook was amazingly similar to some used today. Excellent film indeed.

The fact that this movie is based on real events only adds to the drama and outstanding performances. My husband even really liked it and he prefers action movies. Definitely worth consideration for awards. Subtle and at times not subtle humor intersperced with royal etiquette and the encroaching Germany Nazi threat give good substance to the importance of communication and the at the time new technology of radio.

Interesting sublimely told story- with wonderful performances by all- though Geoffrey Rush steals the show! He should win the Oscar.

A great movie must have at least a good and interesting story. This is a not well known story to those who were born after WWII, and it is very fascinating. The performances by Colin Firth and Jeffrey Rush are very believable and very believable. You can feel the pain of the stutterer and the challenge of a commoner working directly with the King. Both should win awards for their roles. Helena Bonham Carter is always top rate in this kind of role, and she does not disappoint. Sets, costumes, etc are very true and put you into the time and place. A must see!

This is one of the best movies I have seen in a very long time. It has excellent photography, the dialogue in entrancing and the story mesmerizing. I went to appease my husband, but we both thoroughly enjoyed it. It is educational, historic and completely entertaining. Go see it even if you're not sure you will like it -- you will.
