A true story incredibly well-acted. Colin Firth should be a lock for the Oscar. Geoffrey Rush
equally brilliant and Helena Bonham Carter
outstanding. Probably won't win Best Picture
but certainly deserving.

The King's Speech - double meaning, double good

The name of this film refers to both the issue with the future king of England's speech defect as well as the speech that will shape his career and motivate his nation to stand up to Hitler's aggression. Brilliantly written, directed, and acted, this movie tells a difficult story in a serious but affable way. You can feel both the pain of the future king and his subjects as he struggles to address them over the new medium of radio. Yet its the relationship between him and his speech therapist that is the heart of the film. Its both tense and warm with moments of levity and solemnity.
If Colin Firth doesn't get the Oscar for this role, it would be a shame. Powerful yet reserved, this is what cinema aspires to. Somewhat reminiscent to the Madness of King George, its an example of history as drama in the most human way.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The film renders the era in beautiful detail, giving a sense of the revolutionary impact of radio broadcast. Like the Internet in our era, radio changed the perceptions of a generation. The challenges of living through such a significant period are writ large and small in this film.

I just saw this movie today and I have aleady recommended it to several friends. It is based on a true story and believe me, you think you are in that era with those people. The acting is superb and there is just the right amount of humor. There was never a lull in the entire movie. It is a must see for every adult.

"The King's Speech" drew me in from the opening scene! Colin Firth is brilliant as King George VI and surely deserves Best Actor at the Academy Awards. Helena Bonham Carter is outstanding as well. The set designs, the costumes, the music, casting and paying attention and respecting historical information all make this movie extraordinary.

As one who suffered terribly from stuttering as the King did, I was overcome throughout the movie with a deep emotional reverence for King Edward's personal struggle with this devastating problem and the exceptional courage and tough love of the King's therapist. I too was blessed with an innovative therapist who not only helped me but also one of my sons. Now, a weekness is one of our strengths. Everyone should see this encouraging and uplifting movie, especially those who have struggled or still struggle with stuttering or any emotional problems. Parents should not be too concerned with some of the language - I took my granddaughter and she loved the movie, including the excellent history lesson.

I gave this movie 5 stars when I saw it last week. I wanted my girlfriend to see it so I went with her again this week. I can't remember when I have ever seen the same movie in a theater twice within the same month. I would give it 6 stars after seeing it a second time. A truly amazing movie that should take all the trophys this year. The acting by Firth and Rush is so good that you pick up additional nuances the second time around that make it as good or better than the first viewing. The scene where Lionel's ( the speech coach ) wife meets the King and Her Magesty unexpectedly in their modest home is absolutely priceless.

Yes, this Oscar year has had a fairly poor showing of high grossing decent movies, very much unlike last year that gave us Oscar nominations and box office hits like Up, Avatar, Inglourious Basterds, and District 9. This year all we've been shown is a visual beauty in Inception and then a fair amount of weakness as we've only seen re-makes, adaptations, and re-adaptations like True Grit, Tron, and a very good movie in Black Swan. The King's Speech is brilliant though.
It's simple, it's beautiful, it's wonderfully written, impeccably acted. Geoffrey Rush might have to fight out Christian Bale for best supporting actor, but that'd be a good fight to see. This might be the year that Colin Firth gets it all though. Last year was disappointing for him, losing out to Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart. This is not to say that Jeff Bridges wasn't incredible, but Colin Firth in A Single Man was much better.
Go and see the movie. It will make you uncomfortable as you know that every word Firth needs to say just won't come out of his mouth. You'll wriggle and worm about shouting (though, not out loud to disturb other viewers), "Spit it out! Say it for god's sake!"
Overall, one of the best movies of the year in a very poor showing of academy-caliber film.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Very interesting movie... Kept my attention throughout. Imagine, the royals aren't perfect!
Seriously, Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush were excellent in their portrayals of the king and tutor.
Only drawback was the language. Maybe it was true, but very distasteful (MPAA rating "some language" is an understatement, for sure).

The KIng's Speech is moving, inspiring, and a must see. As someone who also stammered horribly in my younger days, I felt the King's pain, frustration with himself and others, and the need to withdraw. An excellent performance by all the actors and one I want to see again.

Inspiring! The Weinstein's have brought us another sensitive story of the human condition set in 1930's England. No car crashes or special effects but soft strokes of humanity. I was drawn in by the wonderful performances of Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter and the entire ensemble. Helena embodied a loving queen mother with subtle sensitivities proving again that "insanity" is not her only note. Colin's terrific performance forced me to grimace as he struggled for his voice. Making me feel compassion for his being born into an austere family and demanding position. Geoffrey Rush mastered the sensitive and strong willed therapist whose own shortcomings gave dimension to his being. Director Tom Hooper transforms us to the past with rhythm and compassion.
This film is a wonderful film. I left feeling I could conquer most anything.

This story was uplifting and special in a different way. Rather than showing us that he completely overcame the stutter, it demonstrated that he had to continue to work at it. He wasn't perfect. An American director/screenwriter would have to tie it up w/ a revision of history.

This movie, I loved. Didn't think I'd love it as much as I did, but it makes for a great date movie. It's not a chick flick by any means, but it's a great period piece.

The ensemble acting in this film is spellbinding, led by Colin Firth as the unassuming and very human monarch, King George VI. The reparte between king and vocal coach is poignant, transparent, funny. It's some of the best acting by some of the best actors in the English-speaking world today. You've got to see this!
