I read these books as a child and reread the first two before seeing the movie. Although the credits list this as an adaptation of "Princess of Mars," there are several elements from the second book incorporated in the film to give it better context and a sense of closure. Great special effects - my wife and I both enjoyed it. Some of the elements of the book were "updated" for a current audience, like the use of the 9th ray for teleportation. All in all, this is a great action movie that was unfairly panned by critics. (Think: those who can, do; those who can't, get jobs as critics.) Good fun.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Having really enjoyed the books as a boy, I pretty much knew what to expect, so I wasn't looking for any deep meanings from the film. I found it very enjoyable and watchable. The animation was good, and the actors played their parts well.
I wasn't overly impressed with the D-Box seats though. Don't think they added a lot to the overall enjoyment.

The effects in this movie were great! Visually they did a fantastic job. The plot was an interesting amalgamation of elements pulled from several of the books, plus some creative license with some of the major events in the original story. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I wonder if I would have felt differently if I weren't comparing to the books? There were a few slow moments, but lots of action. Unfortunately, the actor they chose to portray John Carter did not have the "larger than life" hero quality of the character in the book. He seemed very... mortal.

Aside from HATING the clumsy, heavy, uncomfortable Disney "active" 3D glasses, the film itself wasn't nearly the disaster some reviewers said it was. It was watchable, but not much more.

My wife and I enjoyed it. For the guy who said unknown actors, well it wasn't like Avatar had superstars either. Imho, This movie was a cross between Phantom Menace and Avatar. It is what it is, an entertainment movie. Not a critical Oscar nominee !

All the best parts of the Movie were shown in the previews. There is far to much talking and trekking and not enough action. This movie had so much potential with characters and scenery. It turned out to be a great time to almost take a 2 hour and 12 minute nap. As my girlfriend and I nudged each other to stay awake. I want my money and the lost time back. As a Movie Lover its getting harder to find a good Movie anymore.

I was talked into going to this movie reluctuantly, and am so glad I was. This movie is a perfect example of why you go to the movies. Fun from beginning to end. Fantastic special effects. Great story line. Creation of an entire world and action leaving you on the edge of your seat. Great ending too! Acting is not going to win an oscar but was just fine for the movie. Go see it, you will enjoy it.

Contrary to the picky pro reviewers this is a really good movie that I think Disney has failed to publicize properly. No one knows who John Carter is when he is actually an Edgar Rice Burroughs (Tarzan) character from the civil war. Ithe movie is like Avatar but with a Disney touch. My two boys ages 14 and 11 along with my husband loved it. Great action, good story, terrific special effects and beautiful 3D. Go see it!

I gave John Carter 4 instead of 5 stars mainly because the lead actor was a little stiff. Taylor Kitsch was good during the live action, more traditional segments of the movie but, seemed stiff or stifled during the sceens that were probably videotaped before the so-called "Green Screen". Otherwise a good sci-fi adaptation of the book.

I thought this was a very good Sci-Fi movie. Strong story line and the 2:20 min went surprisingly fast. The acting was great from all actors and actresses, however, Collins stole the show. The special effects was great and it was visually stunning show. I saw in 3D I think you could get away w/2D just as well. I think it had a hint of Star Wars in it, but that was fine for me. Go see it, it's worth the money. I think this kicks off the movie a bit earlier than normal.

I haven't read the Barsoom books yet, so I didn't have fixed expectations, beyond the knowledge that ERB's John Carter is father to Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, and Superman, and grandfather to the Star Wars franchise.
The movie delivered thrills and a visual feast. Yes, we've seen a lot of this before, and Shakespeare "is just a lot of famous quotes strung together".
It's refreshing to see a Mars that isn't constrained by a tedious pretense of "realism" -- there's neither need nor attempt to reconcile Barsoom with NASA's description of the red planet. The imagination is allowed to soar as high as Carter can jump.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This was a suburb adaptation of a story that inspired every scifi movie of the 20th century. The story was excellent, acting excellent, even the 3D added to the feel of being on Mars. I was whining about the cost of tickets, but I'm glad I paid what I did to see it with my people.
Not sure what people are talking about here when they say it was "like Star Wars". It had a bad guy and a good guy. Other than that, it wasn't like Star Wars. Seriously folks, expand your minds.

I liked that it was written by Edgar Rice Burrows so long ago – Not a spectacular movie – I saw it in 3D but it would have been the same if seen in 2D – It did seem a little like Star Wars Lite – And several times I felt like I have seen this before - A good movie not great but good entertainment – I enjoyed it.

I'm a long-time science fiction fan and have learned over the years to go into most sci-fi movies with low expectations. So it was a nice turn of events to have "John Carter" turn out to be such an enjoyable film. It's no "Serenity," that's for sure, but it was a damn sight better than the abominable "Cowboys and Aliens."
Visually gripping, the film also moves along at a good clip for most of its run time. I hardly noticed that it took two-and-a-third hours to get to the end. The story isn't anything special -- boy meets princess, boy saves princess from evil warlord, boy marries princess -- but it's told with relish and imagination. I haven't read the Carter books, but a friend who has said that while the film departed from "Princess of Mars" in many ways, it still captured much of the spirit of Edgar Rice Burroughs' books.
Highlights: The Tharks -- four-armed, tusked native warriors of Barsoom -- were phenomenal. They weren't just stupid aborigines or cannon-fodder, but had some thought put into their culture, actions, and attitudes. The flying machines were gorgeously rendered. The fights were exciting and, for the most part, followable (though there were some rapid-fire edits that left you wondering what you'd just seen).
Best part of the movie for me? Lynn Collins as Dejah Thoris, the aforementioned princess. Not just a pretty face, she threw some passion into her role and was rather convincing as the desperate heroine who will go to any length to save her people. Plus, she was no fainting violet -- she kicked as much butt as the titular hero and could claim her share of responsibility for saving the day. I got a particular kick in one scene where she's dressed in a slinky and thoroughly impractical outfit (Standard Fantasy Women's Wear, as I like to think of it), but when Carter compliments her appearance she basically rolls her eyes and says "it's a bit too revealing for my tastes." Nice jab at the stereotype, I thought.
Downsides: Generic storyline (granted the books were written back in the 1910s, but the script could've been doctored a little more). One-dimensional bad guy, who is being manipulated by fairly standard Mysterious Magic Men. The 3D, while not a detriment, didn't really seem to add a lot to the experience (or justify the ticket premium). And the opening/closing scenes with John Carter's nephew, Edgar Rice Burroughs, seemed a bit too contrived.
Sadly, the low point of the movie was the acting of Taylor Kitsch, who portrayed John Carter. He was fine when it came to action scenes and feats of phenomenal strength and agility, but every time he opened his mouth to deliver his lines they came out in a dull monotone that was just short of wooden. I swear, it seemed like he was channeling the books' hero less than he was a moody teenager.
Still, that wasn't enough to overcome my enjoyment of the total package. It's a movie I might go see again in the theater, and would certainly consider buying when it's out on DVD. It was a fun, escapist romp and a good way to spend a chilly evening with friends.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Just like most so called epic movies, this fell short for me. I saw the movie in 3D and wished I didn't, could have saved $3 and would have enjoyed it about the same. Movie is long, a lot of slow moving parts, I think I dozed off a couple of times. My wife liked it, more of a love story for her with some action. I tend to agree. Also glad I didn't spend the extra money to see it at the IMAX. Not a bad story, just not one of my favorites. I did enjoy the action, especially with no foul language in it.
