The time 2007-2008. Life’s great, credit cards at 6% apr, cheap cars, high wages, and eco overall looked good. Then it all fell to poop. Crash. Major banks after 5 years of giving out money to everyone and their mothers were in crisis. Major defaults on peoples loans, people behind on credit card payments, car market slump, and loan companies calling it quits. This movie is about 3 prominent men working for GTX (global transportation corporation) shipyard. There’s Bobby Walker, who was part of a 3 division lay-off. (salary 160k). Phil Woodward was in management and was part of a 5,000 people layoff. Then you got Gene McClary, VP who ticked off his college roommate and got fired. All this to make the company stocks look good. Watch 3 men handle each of their situations in very different ways. I loved it. Truly what goes up has to come down and vice-versa. Its close to being real, except normal people aren’t so picky to make money. Lucky for Bobby he has a friend. 3 ½ stars out of 5

I thought this was a pretty good movie. The cast was very good (Costner, Affleck, Jones, etc). This is a good attempt at showing what life is like for a lot of white collar workers in this day and age. Ben Affleck does a good job showing how white collar workers are suffering at the hands of the economy. It raises a lot of good questions about what a company owes a worker and vice versa. I thought the way the story was told could have been better , but it was still good enough to makes its point. That being, at the end of the day, the ability to start over in the middle of your prime working years is possible with the help of family and friends.

Set in Boson, MA, "The Company Men" is about corporate downsizing. A transportation company called "GTX" closes two of it's divisions. Subsequently laying off men and woman in upper management positions. You get a real inside look at how the decision is made to lay someone off. Often times their job performance has nothing what so ever to do with the decision to let a person go. You also get a close-up look at how it effects the families when the main bread winners are jobless. The movie is very well done, a nice compliment to the 2009 movie "Up In The Air" which starred George Clooney. In fact I think that "The Company Men" is a better over all film. The ensemble of actors are first rate (4 Academy Award Winners in one film). The movie is at times emotional, draws anger, sadness and at times draws happiness. "The Company Men" is worth the price of admission.

Three of us went to see this film - and our tastes differ so choosing a movie isn't always easy. The Company Men was compelling, and is a thoughtful look at what happens when a company is ruled by how their stocks are doing; instead of taking into consideration the people who work for them and have helped to build that company. Nice to see several story lines at the same time, too. Strong performances from everyone and the visuals were great. Loved seeing Boston - my home town.

This movie gave an overall view of American families struggling with unemployment and financial difficulties. The one thing that I think the movie lacks is that it depicts families going from riches to rags instead of centralizing a focus on a middle class family. Overall the cast worked well together and the movie was enjoyable. It contained humor and emotion, and moved at a good pace. I would recommend it.

If you're ready to wake up and smell the coffee, then this is the movie you want to see. Yes, we've heard about it before and we've read about it in the papers, but seeing in the big screen the raw emotions of what happens when a person gets fired/laid off gives it more a sense of realism. And maybe that's what this movie was trying to do without ending on a real bad note (thank goodness, I really didn't want to get depressed watching a movie). Good acting was an added bonus. The selection of actors was excellent except maybe for Ben Affleck - he looks too clean cut to be fired from the job. But maybe that's the irony of the situation. There are no cookie cutter looks to today's economic collateral damage.

This movie is as slow in developing as the Great Recession has been in recovering. The story involves the lay offs at a large transportation company that has a depressed stock valuation. The movie focuses on the slow and painful process the characters go through when they realize those six figure salaries and golfing lifestyle is a thing of the past.

In 1982 I was a 37 year old mid level manager, and after 10 years with my company, I walked into work one August morning and was asked to leave by noon. If this has happened to you, this movie will resound with you. But if you it hasn't, or if you are not part of corporate America, please go see it and know that this is very real. The truth is that now, white collar jobs are the among the least secure that exist, and except for the few who get the real big dollars, you work at the whim of the executives, the price of the stock and the merger and takeover environment, which is only meant to make the rich get richer, despite the rhetoric of shareholder value, synergie, more and more profit without regard to what is ethtically and morally right.
Because the movie accurately depicts the emotional ups and downs, the loss of self, the denials one goes through, I thought it was spot on and should be seen by everyone.
Ben Affleck was quite real in his roll, as was the rest of the cast. Tommy Lee Jones was great as always.
The movie has a subdued tone to it, but because of the subject matter, it is the appropriate.
Go see it not becuase it's a great action movie, or a tearjerker, or will make you laugh, but because it is real and will make you think.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This is a film every American should see! With the current economic crisis we are facing, the hard times can be a real downer.
But there is HOPE and a possibilty of CHANGE. And that is exactly what this movie presents while keeping you entertained!
The cast was incredible! From Ben Affleck to Tommy Lee Jones, every actor fit their part to a "T".
Having gone through similar unfortunate cirumstances as the characters, I could relate to their dilema of a lost lifestyle and the need to be persistent despite it all.
Kevin Costner and Chris Cooper were also great and gave intense performances that I think you will enjoy.
It's a jungle out there. But it 's good to see a filmmaker like John Wells confront troubled times with drama, humor, and an engaging story.
In the end, this movie is a great example of a famoue Jessie Jackson saying. Despite financial setbacks: "Keep HOPE ALIVE"!

The 1-week engagement making it eligible for the Academy Awards led me to believe that this was an exceptional film, or at least that it strived to be so. No, they're just hoping that their stellar supporting cast (Cooper, Costner, Jones) might get some nominations. You certainly won't be seeing this title getting any noms for best picture or best screenplay or best director. Aside from the acting, it is strictly second rate, never rising above the level of a made-for-TV movie -- where it would be more appropriate anyway. I wouldn't expect people to line up around the block to watch any movie about the current recession while we're still living in it and suffering through it; it would have to be f***ing brilliant, and "The Company Men" most definitely is not that.
.
Not that it's a total disaster: the supporting cast is, of course, very good, for what being good in a mediocre film is worth. And it wasn't as painful as usual to watch Ben Affleck carry a film -- it's one of his better performances. And the depiction of the times feels very accurate -- I haven't had steady work for two years myself, so I can vouch for it. But as a whole, it's uninspired. I agree with the other reviewers here that the faux-uplifting ending was a loud false note, but it was already floundering, and better ending wouldn't have helped that much.
.
The best part of the experience was that I had not been to the AMC Century City theaters since it was rebuilt, and it is the clearest and most pristine screen I've ever seen aside from the Director's Guild. It puts the Arclight Cinemas, where I usually go, to shame, to my great surprise. I'll be seeing movies there as often as possible from here on.
.
Just looked up writer / director / co-producer John Wells on IMDb, and his writing/directing credits are entirely TV. No surprise whatsoever.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I spend my days toiling in a cubicle for an multi-billion, international company. We've gone through numerous rounds of layoffs over the past couple of years. This movie captured so much of what's been going on for so many of us still in or formerly in the corporate world. The men in the film, like so many of us, defined their lives by their work -- it was the thing that seemed to have the most meaning to them -- and I appreciated watching them redefine themselves and figure out what really matters. Only shortcoming is the crappy, Hollywood style happy ending that felt totally tacked on at the very tail end of the movie.

Earnest writing and restrained performances from a talented ensemble cast made this film for me. It captures the zeitgeist without wallowing in it. My only criticism is the Hollywood ending tacked on to the last two minutes. The film already sparked a hopeful note in the the relationships of its main character. Why did some executive think that hope and optimism needed to be expressed more literally? Ugh.
