It's difficult to review this movie without separating the technological accomplishment from the rest of the movie. What James Cameron has accomplished is so visually stunning and viscerally breath-taking, that the rest of the movie is hard-pressed to keep up.
That aside, the movie is a pretty standard technology-is-evil-noble-savages-have-much-to-teach-us fare. Not that there's anything wrong with that...in many ways, a more complicated story would have distracted from the sheer visual spectacle. And it is a spectacle: an entire world as lush as the Amazon rain-forest, a cast more than half of whom are completely computer generated, and acting from the human actors that is seamless with there environment.

This was the best movie I've seen too in a long time. If you see it in the theater, you've got to see it in 3D. I felt like I lived in Pandora or at least wanted to move there. The plot at some point becomes obvious. However, the graphics and scenery are so visually stunning that I had my mouth open the whole movie.

I enjoyed this movie - Story, Characters, FX, and 3D- all were awesome. I felt bombarded with the messages which seemed designed to either influence me, or make me feel guilty as a man with European ancestry. The movie attacked Capitalism and the "Bush Doctrine" and promoted a Gaia earth-mother religious world-view. It also demonized my ancestors. The movie also seemed to glorify resistance fighting. This is timely given our war against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, but I would have rather not had it support our enemy's cause. I don't have a problem with a blockbuster movie dealing with issues, but just felt a bit drowned in them with this movie.

Story is fun with a predictable outcome but the really good stuff is the visual effects. This has got to be one of the most amazing effects laden movies yet produced. Stunning imagery and realistic CG. The use of 3D is just 'out of this world' and makes this film one of my top 10 of 2009.

While the plot was outrageously cliche, the special effects and graphics of the movie were enough to make you forget that. Some scenes were absolutely breathtaking! I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is thinking about seeing it.

Avatar was one of the best movies I've gone out and seen in a while!
It was a little long and I almost thought it was ending halfway through the movie, but it was a totally-worth-it, exciting, 2 hour and 40 minute film. The special effects were great; the best in 3D that I have ever seen. The characters were believable and you feel a close connection with them. The battle scenes were truly epic. This is definitely one to spend the extra money and go see in the theater. It's really an experience.

This was an overall good movie but again as with many recent "blockbusters" was too long. Could have been shortened by 20 minutes. It was very predictable.
For adults the "history" (Indians and trail of Tears for example) was woven in well and kids will be entertained by the action.

"Avatar" is an enjoyable movie-going experience, but not the cinematic game-changer it is hyped to be. All sarcasm aside, it really does play like "Dances With Wolves" with aliens, which is sometimes quite effective. VIsually, it is striking; emotionally, it does pull you in. But James Cameron has essentially taken a often-seen story (right down to the cartoonishly villainous military) and wrapped it up in a bright new package.

I'll admit the hype for the movie had me skeptical but I walked away feeling like I just watched a turning-point in cinema. Maybe this is was what my dad was feeling after seeing Star Wars in theaters? The 3D effects were incredible (see the 3D version!) and I really appreciate all the detail that went into making Pandora such a lush environment. Throughout the movie I was trying to figure out certain scenes were real, CG or both.
The story, while not perfect, I thought was well-paced and enjoyable. I can understand the "Dances with Wolves in space" talk but the experience as a whole was just too fun to nitpick. Go to see this movie to be entertained, not as an art or social critic, and you'll get your moneys worth.

GO. GO. A spectacular, moving, work of pure escapism. Beautiful art splashed with great action. The 3-D effects were riveting and immersed you into the settings and the characters. . . .each of which evoked tremendous emotions. If you dismiss the formulaic plot of a callous industrio-military machine violently pushing out the 'natives' that are 'one with their environment', themes from Lawrence of Arabia and Dances With Wolves shine through. ENJOY IT! AND AGAIN

Finally a movie that takes you to a time and place as beautiful as any "heavenly" garden, except for the violent mythological animals that exist too. Hard not to compare the Nevi with native American Indians in their love of beauty and the earth and the ruthless "robber barons" trying to take it all away. There is a peacefulness about the Nevi's connections to the animals. I loved the 3D and it wasn't overused but brought the viewer into the "other world."
