This movie was filled with great actors demonstrating their talent to levels no longer seen in the box office, super-duper, fast-paced hits of sci-fi and technology. The movie was based on human identity, truth, exploration, change and most of all forgiveness. I would recommend it to everyone who wants their heart touched.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Annette Benning, Naomi Watts, and Kerry Washington were all superb. They made their pain palpable and there were elements of their lives to which most women can relate. There were plot contrivances but because the movie was so outstanding overall I could overlook them. There might be some for whom the film would be too 'maudlin' but I thought that it was right on the money emotionally.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I wanted to love this movie because I have great respect for many of its actors, particularly Annette Benning. She is boldly willing to go to difficult places, allowing her age and the psychology of the moment to fall across her face to amazing effect. But the movie itself disappoints. The plot reads like it has one foot planted in a daytime soap with the toe of the other foot dipping in a little Mexican magical realism. I wish the producers had given more care in the film's basic problem because the talent inside deserved it, as did the timeless poetry of its essential story.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

We meet 3 women all of whom become connected at the end but each taking a very very different journey into motherhood through adoption.
Kerry Washington is perfect as the eager to please and barren wife Lucy who can't seem to allow herself to be imperfect and vulnerable as she and her husband seek to adopt a baby. Next we meet the very distant controlling manipulative and somewhat sadistic Elizabeth played by Naomi Watts. As predictable as it is that she is the daughter of Karen (Annette Bening) it is not predictable her choices as she weaves her way in and out of the life of others without discretion or care of what is left in her wake.
Karen is the most interesting character. She represents millions of women who have given up their babies for adoption only to be haunted by the choice for years to come and living a life limited by that choice. Surprisingly I found the chemistry between Bening and Smits (her eventual love interest) to be a bit dry, however Jackson and Watts sizzle as a May-December trysts. Their coupling results in the birth of a baby & brings a sweet and bitter end to a movie that leaves you wanting more. This almost perfectly cast movie left me looking for the easy to digest ending tied up all neat in a bow.
But as with life and adoption it's sometimes messy. And there is no perfect ending.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
