Well I have to say, as a child I remember this story, and I was really looking forward to this movie...boy was I shocked. The visuals and characters were done very well, but the story and overall mood of the movie was so depressing I had a hard time enjoying the movie. My 10 year old seemed sort of uncomfortable but enjoyed the visuals, but in my opinion, this movie was horrible. Is it really necessary to make a movie like this so depressing and full of sadness??? This was supposed to be FUN! I will NOT be buying it when it comes out!

Very disappointing. Very violent and sets a very bad example for children who might see it. Max (main character) is a spoiled, obnoxious brat who continually misbehaves (violently!) throughout the movie. The monsters are very dark and threatening for most of the film and there are no lessons taught/learned from the film (something I personally expect from a PG childrens movie). With that said, the special effects, costumes, music, and cinematography was good/great. But the message of the movie was too dark for a PG. I read the book as a kid but I don't remember ANYTHING like this.

This movie left a sad and dark cloud hanging over your head when you left the theater. It really focused on Max's sadness and inability to deal with his father's anger and abuse toward his mother. The actor who palyed max was great but the violence was very disturbing, and it was in no way playful or entertaining. Do not take your little ones, they will cry.

This was absolutely the worst movie that I have ever been to in my life. My three year old is now scared to death of monsters. There was so much violence and negative emotion in this movie that my wife and I would have never taken our child if we had known. Save your money. I wish I had.

The writing and special effects were absolutely amazing. For those who think it is inappropriate for children, I find the criticism absurd. The animatronics were amazing and very true to the book graphically. The moral of the story far too subtle for kids as presented here... unless the moral is to do whatever you want and go home when it stops being fun. The kid playing Max was waaaay to old for the role and was, therefore, not believable.

I cannot get this movie out of my mind. The story and emotion are resonating within me and it really made me think. WTWTA was so well made, and is so unique in its dialogue and ideas. I would without a doubt recommend this movie for all ages, I'm 21 and never once thought of it as a kids' movie. It was never predictable, even if you know the story from the book. I loved this movie and will see it again.

I loved every moment of this film. I have studied films for 20 years and as I watched WTWTA I was in awe. I think this is the most powerful story about a child that I have seen in years, and would recommend it to anyone with a sense of imagination.
Do not take these negative reviews to heart. Anyone who cannot love this film cannot find the child inside themselves. See this movie, in the theatre or at home, hopefully with a kid.

If you are familair with the book and know going in the background and reasoning of the onsters, you will love it! I explained to my 7 yearold that the monsters sttod for his mom and sister and some of his emotions. My 7 year old loved it! The film was very well made and I love the action and adventure! Saw this movie Saturday night at an IMAX theater. Did not feel it was worth the extra $5 a ticket to see it that way. Felt they did a great job at making the characters look like they did in the book. The actor that played Max was very talented. Movie seemed to drag on even though it was only 1-1/2 hours long. I left this movie not knowing how to feel about it. But I woke up the next morning realizing why I had actually really enjoyed this film: it takes Maurice Sendak's childhood 10-pager and fabricates a lesson in childhood morals. The fact that this film is really a story told through the imagination and eyes of a 6yr old is simply brilliant (something a viewer may want to have in mind before seeing the film)! The visuals were stunning and the writing was on-point with some of the things I remember in myself as a kid. The whole film is a work in symbolism and metaphors and I would like to see it again to fully grasp them all. I loved this film, but I admit that it took some reflection.

I went to see this movie with my Fiancé and his best friend, all of us are over 25. The visual is amazing, but the plot is really convoluted. It took me (a film studies and literature major) 45 mins after the movie to come to a conclusion about the theme, plot and resolution. Not a great movie- just ok- the only thing that make it even that are that the characters look just like the book. Not really worth the extra for the IMAX experience. Overall, disappointing.

My 6 year old boy seemed to enjoy the movie however the 4 year old lost interest pretty quickly. My wife took one for the team and escorted our daughter shopping while my son and I watched the movie. *Imax Ticket price for 4 with fees: $50.00 *Food Price $54.25 (we did not eat lunch and got there early) *Money spent when Daughter was escorted out and kept occupied in Mall... $185.00. *Cost per Min: this entire 120 min ordeal cost me $2.40 a min In conclusion: Was the movie any good? After my daughter left I fell asleep. My son work me up during the credits and said it was not too scary. Sorry I was unable to confirm if the movie was good and provide a fair review. I plan to go again next weekend with the family.

I saw this movie in the Imax format with a large crowd of students from RISD (Rhode Island School of Design). Much like The Rocky Horror Picture show, those students were dressed up in costume for different charachters and it was obvious that htey were avid fans of the book. The movie was excellent when viewed on that level. If you go to see it as an exact reproduction of the book on screen, save your money and buy the book. If you go to see it because you think it is child oriented, once again save the money and buy the book. If you go to see it because of the message it relates, it is money well spent

I never read the book but I am going to just to compare it to the movie. I brought my boyfriend to I-Max for his birthday to experience the big screen and I was a little disapointed in the story. I got the whole thing and cried at the end when the boy was in his mothers arms, but it was a depressing movie and not approiate for children at all. Max was dealing with all of his emotions and they didn't make it clear enough for young children to comprehend. I kept waiting for it to get MUCH better but it never did. I took my 9 year old nephew. He loved it! I'm not sure that he really understood it, however. At different points in our lives we view the same information differently (experience). The book was, of course, written by an adult. This was one of my favorite childhood books, which I hadn't read since a child. It gave me a great insight into my thought processes as a child, which apparently haven't changed very much as an adult. It was great!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This movie was made really well, but was a bit boring. The story was really thin, but what can you expect from a movie that was adapted from a 10 page children's book?

Technically impressive, but too much smashing, yelling, noise. My 9 -year- old grandson liked it but he cried at the end, my 11-year-old grand daughter thought it was so-so, my husband found a lot of humor in it. It just didn't speak to me and I was disappointed with IMAX; it just seemed too loud (and that for $4 more per person).

Took 6 10-yr-olds, 15 y.o., hubby & me...all agree it was terrible. The kids didn't get the symbolism at all--they thought the kid needed a time out! I fell asleep. My husband had watched the making of the movie on HBO prior to going so at least knew what was happening. It was a waste of two hours--and we splurged on the IMAX experience...not worth it at all!
