Don't look for simple plot and Disney colors in this film. You have to understand nuance and internal narrative beauty. The young boy is superb. He carries the film with his face and vocal quality. The expressions of the Wild Things are so subtle that a viewer can cry over the beasts' personal dramas. And the soundtrack is more interesting than any I have heard in years. Finally someone has broken the pattern of boring American films this decade. Yeah Spike Jonze. Hope this film wins a dozen Oscars.

The movie was entertaining for children
and interesting for adults. It contained enough imagery to make it interesting for adults. The Jim Henson puppets were very Sendakesque. IMAX experience made it more intense.

I thought this was one of the most charming movies I've seen in a long time. Max' view of the world reminded me so much of my own son's perspective at that age. The monsters were incredibly whimsical and so true to the book in their appearance. This movie reminded me of "The Neverending Story" which is also a longtime favorite of mine.

The movie had great graphics. But, I'd just wait for it to come out on cable rather than pay the movie theatre price to see it. Some parents thought it was too violent, but I doubt that the average child would find it frightening. My 7 year old granddaughter was not in the least frightened by some of the "wild things" behavior. As I said, it was "okay", but not worth the cost of the theatre experience.

I am not normally a Spike Jones fan, but his film successfully combines our childhood memories of Maurice Sendak's classic book with a 1hr 30min feature-length movie, filled with wonderful costumes and brilliant photography. This movie is simply a piece of art..

I grew up loving this book - in fact, my boyfriend and I read it in the parking lot before the movie - the only thing not on par was the hanging from the trees scene, which is one of our favorites.
We loved the movie - saw it at the IMAX. The costumes and shots were great. Go see it, esp if you loved the book!

This was one of the best movies I have ever seen, though, I don't understand some other reviews, like one about "Max's inability to deal with his father's anger and abuse towards his mother". There was never abuse portrayed in the movie from his father, his father was never even in the movie, except for a gift given to max by his father. I would have to agree though, this isn't really a movie for a child under the age of 10, but it is still a very good movie, if you can find the moral behind all off the depression.

Our family saw this movie together. From our teenage son to our 10 year old daughter, it created quite an insightful conversation afterward. This movie helps adults remember how actions and language affect children and how children then "act out" their frustrations and fears instead of talking about them.

Not only does this movie sing to your inner monster, it will also bring a beloved book to life. Somehow this move takes a book about a boy who leaves reality when he is punished and creates a storyline that shows a character develop an idea about his own life in reality. We have Max, the main character, go from feeling put upon by his mother to suddenly being a King of a rag-tag band of monsters. Here Max learns that being King, like being an adult, is not a cut-and-dry way to be. In being King, Max comes to appreciate his mother and her obligations in life.
This film had me laughing, crying, howling at the sun, and biting my partner!

This is a fantastically enriching film that will revive the innocence & magic of your childhood. No matter how deep in there they might be buried. I keep reading reviews that say character's didn't evolve & it's just silly. You can tell all the lessons characters (especially Max) are learning EVEN IF THEY DON'T VERBALIZE IT! I think Spike Jonze knew this & was on point. Directing children is one of the hardest things in filmmaking & he did a masterful job. Whoever doesn't like this film is too self involved & just need to let a big HOWL out. This has turned into one of my favorite flicks and I don't even have kids. Come on folks: Let your imagination run WILD!!

I was calling people before I left the parking lot and telling them not to go see this movie. I have a Masters in Early Childhood and have read this book millions of times to my own children and my students. How the movie writers came up with such a drepressing storyline from those 9 sentences is beyond me. Yes, Max had an anger issue. The book brings that out--but all the other confusion and depression and destruction protrayed in the movie are a downer to adults and boring and frightening to children. We paid for the IMAX experience and were so excited about seeing this. We were greatly disappointed.

I took my 8 year old son to see this movie. We had just finished reading the book and he wanted to see it. The character Max, was a spoiled brat. I didn't feel sorry for him or empathize with him in any way. Neither did my son. The soundtrack was depressing. There isn't one 'happy song' in the whole movie. Visually, the movie is great. The monsters are brought to life perfectly. The movie lacks color. Nearly everything in the movie is tan/brown. There are some scenes at the end which were downright scary and violent, not like the book at all.
The only gem of the movie was Lauren Ambrose as KW. Honestly, she was the only part of the movie we liked. Don't waste your money.

Worst movie I have seen this year. The movie is slow, boring and the characters unlikable. I was hoping for a magical, feel good movie, with a positive message (like the book) that my 8 and 11 year old daughters and 9 year old nephew would love. Instead, the Wild Things were clinically depressed. I sat waiting for the light at the end of the tunnel or resolution to these creatures fears and sadness. My daughters left in tears and my nephew said it was the worst movie he has ever seen.

As many people of said before I, this film is beautifully shot and edited. Unfortunately, the beauty of the film stops there. Spike was able to bring to life many of the stereotypical relationship dynamics of childhood but none of them were resolved nor did the characters evolve. In my opinion this renders the film pretty much pointless. The film had all the potential of a classic but I suspect attention to visual detail won out over the deeper elements required in a classic.

WTWTA is meandering, nonsensical, and even appeared to be un-scripted in several parts. Its shallow dialog was boring, whiny, and seemed almost like improvisation that just didn't go anywhere.
In contrast to looking at some of the ugliest characters ever to grace an IMAX screen, some of the visuals were amazing. You can feel the danger in the sea storm, and the fort built by the island monsters (wild things, whatever) was imaginative and creative.
The monsters (some which looked like a hairy H.R. Puff-n-Stuff) are so annoying that you just want to get away from them. Which I did.... by walking out and getting a ticket for another movie.
If you like melancholy films then maybe you will... umm, enjoy it?

I was blown away, much better than I expected. An intelligent story about basic human relationships and how they work. In this sense it's not necessarily a children's movie. In my opinion it's a movie not only about kids but about all of us. It's loud and wild, yet also quiet and wonderfully observed if you care to look beyond it's surface. Jonze's quirkiness kept me smiling throughout, for the story and the visuals are not only clever but also refreshing and strangely funny. Performances are superb – including and especially Max's. The delicate interaction between high and low tech is astounding. Camera shakes at the right moments and keeps steady when it should be. Beautifully shot this was all in all a wonderful experience.

In my opinion the movie was awesome! My 7 yr old daughter found it amazing as well. I don't believe that Max was portrayed as a spoiled brat. I saw Max to be heartbroken & friendless. I understood the frustration he felt inside about his family & his need to vent. The Wild Things were amazing! Each one being an example of Max's emotions. For a book that I believe was written with only 38 words Jonze did an amazing job. Yes, it's a bit on the dark side but let's understand & let our children understand that life is not always fun & easy. Even as adults we would love to scream & act wild at times but because we are adults we are unable to express ourselves in such ways.
I am in love with the movie as much as I am in love with book.

I really enjoyed this movie. Yes, there was a point where things turned dark, but there was a clear message about friendship and how easy it is to hurt someone's feelings that you care about, how easy it is to overlook what is right in front of you. If you're looking for the one-dimensional characters from the book then this movie is not for you. However, if you want to see the story come alive and give depth to the characters, then you should see it. As a big fan of the book, I say "go see it!"
