I read several very short reviews re: this movie, and they didn't really prepare me for the actual movie. I simply wasn't prepared to see a nature movie with a very slow moving story woven between scenes.
Below are a sampling of quotes from big reviewers that, to me, put together describe the movie... these are all from POSITIVE reviews:
"Both sharply smart and maddeningly elusive," "It's overflowing with powerful images that will stay with me a long time, even if I still can't explain some of them." "Daring in concept, occasionally daffy in execution and ultimately unforgettable" ""The Tree of Life" is long, often redundant and certainly on its own wavelength." "Some will dismiss its overarching themes and elliptical visuals as pretentious. Others might question its quasi-biblical images.""...like watching the most attractive person you've ever seen in your life tell the most boring, drawn-out story you've ever heard."
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I loved this film. The film asks a lot of the viewer and if you're willing to participate and do the work you'll be amply rewarded. Sounds like therapy. It is. If that's not what you go to movies for, I get it and that's fine, Hangover 2 is playing right next door. The film spoke to me about my childhood and how I parent my kids. The performances are terrific. The cinematography, the music, stunning. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

First of all, after seeing Terrence Malick's first 4 films and knowing how far apart they were released (how much time and care he takes), everyone should know this will be an instant classic before even seeing it. This was the only unsurprising thing about the film though. This is the most existential and transendental of Malick's films. It is more a story and history of time on planet Earth than it is about a family in the 1950's and how a son grapples with his upbringing. This is Malick's Magnun Opus and the photography and editing are like no other!!!! The acting is also great by a bunch of unknowns and Brad Pitt and Sean Pitt, surreal unto itself.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The best film that will probably not receive a single Oscar nomination. And that's because you have to be fairly intelligent to appreciate a film like this. The acting was as perfect as it could be. The directing was expected considering the legend behind this project. And the cinematography was pronominal considering they didn't use any dollys or artificial "movie lights". All natural, baby. Bravo to the cast and crew. You all made a fine piece of cinema. I just wish more films were made with this much intelligence and meaning.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Some people say this is an incomprehensible film and a waste of time. Despite its meandering, organic structure, no doubt difficult for those used to a linear narrative, which is most people, The Tree of Life is a valuable, beautiful work of art. It is not an easily followed movie adventure but a series of existential questions... with a few answers.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I know of the cosmic scope, but felt very moved by this human movie. The movie puts into relationship the unknowable of the cosmos and God, and the feelings that connects us to life, each other, and the cosmic. We see the development of compassion and love, and who the 'you' in the infinite, God, is and how we connect to it.Come prepared

This movie is not a simple watch, since the storyline is nonlinear and not all loose ends are wrapped up. The visual impact is stunning. I am also the father of three boys, one of whom also recently died and for me the effect was overwhelming, and the closing words are incredible!

The beginning of this film includes no less than 25 minutes of silence while taking us through an orgy of images ranging from pools of amniotic fluid to Big Bang Theory images of meteors crashing the surface of the earth, volcanoes erupting, and dinosaurs (yes, that's not a typo) exploring nature. The rest of the movie involves the story of an abusive father (played well by Brad Pitt) as seen through his eldest child's perspective. The storyline is ultimately not difficult to follow, but it all ends up being pointless. This is not an enjoyable movie, nor is it compelling enough to recommend. I would recommend skipping this movie entirely.

If you enjoy wasting your time watching a self-indulgent, trite, pretentious, painfully slow display of unwarranted self-importance masquerading as profundity go see this movie. Otherwise you'll get more joy out of contemplating your own belly button. Really, this is almost insulting; we don't need a filmmaker to remind us that we all have questions about our own existence, our relationships to our family and work, and the presence of something larger than ourselves.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

This is a mesmerizing and challenging film. Terrence Malick knows how to create memorable images and there many, many startlingly beautiful ones in this movie, but the "creation myth" trappings around this film obscure it's real accomplishment, a deeply loving evocation of childhood, family and the dynamics that drive each. Brad Pitt & Sean Penn may be the names on the marquee but the true stars, and the main reason to see this film, are the young boys who play his children. Never has boyhood been so respectfully realized from the perspective of a child than it is here by Malick. No matter what you feel about the baggage this film unpacks, the performances of the boys--and their mother, Jessica Chastain--will be what stays with you.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

If you like to go to the movies to see beautiful imagery set to soothing music this might be for you. You get at least 45 minutes of nothing but this. If you want to watch something that at the end you have no idea what the movie was about, this also might be for you. But I go to the movies to learn or be entertained and this movie did neither. When it was finished I had absolutely no idea what this movie was about. Yes. it had Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, 2 of the better actors of our time (I love Sean Penn!) Penn never said a word. Only after the movie, when 1 patron among many, explained that it was just about life-the creation - beautifully done but for way too long, and the life of a middleclass midwestern family, which in no way resembled mine did I have any understanding. She said the story reminded her of her family.
So if you want to be bored, (my significant other fell asleep and and my friend's boyfriend did the same) and be shaking your head, try it. Otherwise, stay away.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Which is probably, maybe possibly (?) the point. Or is it? Terrence Malick deserves credit for assembling a series of deft visual tone poems, and yet their flow, unity, cohesion or whatever else you might want to call it are rarely apparent, even for the extreemly self-disciplined and attentive. The film is like walking through a hall of impressionist art; sometimes wondrous, sometimes tantalizing, but after an hour or so alternating between illumination and further confusion, irritatingly vacant. If the goal of "Tree" (like the Great Pyramid) is to create a blank slate for each of us to impress our own feelings and therefore find wonder in our self-congratulation, then it succeeds. But every point typically has an arrow, mentor, artist or conspirator to deliver it, and in that role, Malick is surely absent.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

If it werent for a few shots/scenes that I felt were a bit misplaced this would be a perfect movie and get the full five stars.
Terrence Malick's epic about life and our place in the universe is easily comparable to Kubrick's 2001 for its stunning visuals and sheer audacity.
This movie is by no means for everyone. Some people quite simply wont like it, even if they understand it. It can be rather slow at times and is not conventionally told. There are only a few scenes of dialogue and we learn about the characters and events primarily through visuals and use of voice over. But for the patient viewer, and perhaps those used to Malick's unique style, this movie is a visual and emotional treat. The cinematography is breathtaking. The directing is brilliant. It is finely acted and Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain and the young, but impressive Hunter McCracken do great justice to their characters.
If you are one who loves a truly visual film, and has the attention span to sit through a movie without gun violence, fast cars or blue cat people, then all I can say is see this movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
