Malick is one of a kind, a genuine artist who seems to be trying to create motion paintings rather than motion pictures. At first I found the movie baffling and annoying, felt like his quirks had run amok - the lyrical voice overs of Badlands and Days of Heaven have now replaced dialogue almost completely, and his love of nature (especially flowers and birds and space) completely overwhelm the human being characters. Yes, at times this movie does feel indulgent and as arty/hokey as a Calvin Klein Obsession ad, but the visuals and the performances and the weird cosmic rhythm of the narrative won me over. This guy aims for notes most directors can't even hear, and I don't think he gives a rat's butt what anyone thinks either, which I also like. There are not too many directors who can create this kind of visual poetry. You may think one is enough, or maybe even one too many, but I am glad the guy is making movies again and will look forward to seeing what he does next.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I have rarely been so excruciatingly embarrassed as watching this film for 138 minutes. When someone shows you the depth of his soul, it is, I suppose, ungrateful to point out it is an inch deep. But this sort of humbug needs to be exposed.
The visuals and music were New Age kitsch along with the rest of this film. I didn't know if I was watching a National Geographic Special or a lava lamp. There already exists magnificent religious music; why pay some Hollywood hack to counterfeit it as well?
The movie attempted what is called theodicy, that is a justification of how an all-powerful, just God can permit the self-evident cruelties and injustices of life. The logical answer is: "because he doesn't exist" or "because he is a jealous, vengeful God, just as described in the Pentateuch" (mirrored, of course, in the Brad Pitt character who equates love with obedience cf. the Fall of Man.)
But that's not a good enough answer for Malick who needs some warm, fuzzy panacea. Hence the "way of grace," acceptance. "I give you my son," give him to a God who killed his own? Or to the Big Bang, to cosmogony? What does acceptance of the Big Bang mean? What could be more the "way of nature" than the cosmic expansion? The fact that leading critics found this movie "profound" speaks volumes about the spiritual shallowness of the present.

Brad Pitt is superb as always, and the visuals and interesting, but missing something... was highly disappointed, after not getting into see it in one theater waiting a week to see it in another theater to a packed audience.

Critics laughably duped. T. Malik owes deep apology to Stanley Kubrik. Several beautiful photoshopped nature slides, otherwise worse than boring - torturous!
And the absurd storyline: 1950's fundamentalist?/typical?/abusive! family life with Frank Lloyd Wright, Mid-Century taste. At least Sean Penn character had the good sense not to utter ONE WORD! How cosmic/not...

I thought after reading many positive reviews from critics that it was a worthy movie choice (especially given the cast). However, 20 minutes into the movie I was scratching my head. Sean Penn said approximately 20 words the entire movie. Overall, it had so many twists/turns that were pointless and I still have so many unanswered questions about the plot. It was my movie pick with my husband and instead of a 1 to 1 choice I now owe him 2 movies it was so bad. I stuck around till the end hoping it would turn out better and it was even more stupid and bizarre as time went on! For the time we were in the theatre, I consider it a waste of 2.5 hours of my life and would rather be at the dentist getting a root canal...it would be more productive! The writer should seriously consider a new day job...

Wow, it is very rare that I see a movie that is truly awful from start to finish. People were filing out of the theater throughout the entire film. I was determined to stick it out, thinking there would be some revelation at the end that would tie the entire mess together. Didn't happen. I actually felt angry when I left the theater that I had been one of the few who was gullible enough to sit through it. Really, do not waste your money or time on this stinker. You may be tempted to think that you are "missing something" or that it is a "film of art" and has some elusive story line, plot or meaning that you are unable to grasp. Believe me, it isn't there. Shame on the director.

No stars is the real rating I see for this movie." What a waste of my time & money. One of the worst films ever. The 10 minutes of partial black screen was unnecessary and added nothing to the story. The entire movie left me irritated - kept waiting for the actual story to start and come together to make sense - but it never did. Anyone claiming they enjoyed and understood this project is living in another world, or just trying to impress. Sean Penn's character was useless and made no sense at all. Don't waste your time or money on this one.

Like all great art, this movie stays with you long after your experience of it. The filmmakers dispense with nearly every customary way of telling a story, and if you can let go of those expectations (I almost walked out), the film washes over you as comprehensibly and incomprehensibly as a dream.

beautiful. The glidecam or crane work that they used was first rate. That being said I would much rather have watched a behind the scenes on the technical and lighting aspects of this muddled, self-indulgent, art-house portfolio piece then the "film" itself. **someone count how many times the camera is shot into the sun--characters moving in and out of the way of the sun etc. Visually a great look, but in every scene (regardless of whether the director is trying to tell us something about the "light" in the sky, heavenly themes etc)...simply overused.
I felt like Kevin Bacon in footloose when his shoes were tied to the tracker and kept trying to jump off. I would have left if I had any other plans or if the cine-file couple next to me in the bk theater weren't painfully trying to act interested for fear of seeming stupid to their counterpart. It simply didn't matter what happened at the end of the film, I got the point in the beginning...that I wasn't going to get the point. It's not that I'm thick or didn't pay attention, it's that I didn't care...and neither will you.
This is a rental since it's appeal is so unknown. Chances are the regular Joe wants it off, and I can guarantee you that the blond gf in the room grabs the US weekly within the first five minutes.
I am 28 year old filmmaker and actually embrace indie art-house pictures. This was just so over the top I can't recommend seeing it in the theaters. But again, the movement of the cameras throughout were inspirational.

This is a complete miracle of a film. I left the theater feeling momentarily returned to a state of childhood innocence. Terrence Malick articulates a simple, sincere way to live "spiritually" in a universe that is often beautiful, often terrible, and ultimately probably completely indifferent to human life (or any life, for that matter.) The performances by Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain as the parents are astounding, but even more so the two sons, played by Hunter McCracken and Laramie Eppler. (There's a third son in the film, but he's always in the background of the action.) The film alternates between rapturous and terrifying cosmic passage, and a coming-of-age story which brims with stunning insights. (Indeed, some of the psychological realism present in certain of the scenes seems new in Malick.) Through it all of course is Malick's (and art director Jack Fisk's) eye for fleeting details and ephemeral (often strange) snatches of beauty. The structuring of time and memory is brilliant. I do have one reservation about the film as a whole, which is that the finale on the beach--most likely a dream in which all the figures are the dreamer himself--does not really work. The symbolism seems too tidy and heavy-handed. Whereas the young Jack's spiritual awakening is clearly and convincingly depicted, the adult Jack's re-awakening, in the course of one day, as he thinks about a dream he had the night before, don't come off quite as convincingly. We see that adult Jack (Sean Penn) lives in a sterile glass house with a partner who doesnt seem to love him, where Nature seems excluded (dried flowers brought in for decor looking alien in the cold house); and that he works in a giant sterile glass building where Nature (in the form of potted trees) is also alien and excluded. We see him remembering a later period of his youth, in the 1960s, when he would have begun to have lost his sense of spiritual connection to the world. We understand that as he tries to rediscover his lost spiritual peace, he contemplates cosmic history and contemplates especially the time period of the 1950s when he felt he had it; but then the sequence on the beach seems to be overkill, after we work through all those other memories. I don't really know how else Malick might have conveyed the contemporary Jack's re-awakening, but something indeed seems lacking at this last dramatic moment. Who knows, maybe I'll change my mind about this when I see the film a third time. (Or a fourth, or a tenth.)
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Sequences that feature live acting are extraordinary, and Malick surely knows how to get the most from his actors, but this film is poorly served by the execution of its ambitious scope--an attempt to situate the strange mystery of human relationships in the vastness of all-time and all-creation. Who among us honestly tries to reconcile our childhood memories with images of nebulas? Dinosaurs? This is what Malick supposes is the key to deep understanding, with overlong (albeit gorgeous) image sequences of space and pre-historic earth.

This is a major dissappointment. I loved the promise and premise. The execution was so abstract and vague that it could have meant almost anything. There was not much to identify with if you were not a boy growing up in the midwest. Even if you were, the well crafted scenes of midwestern family life were hardly the calling card to craft a message of universal truth.
I had to go to Wikipedia after seing the movie to get an explanation. I loved 2001 Space Oddessy...which this movie has been compared to...but thought this was a middling muddled waste of time.

The hype was sure there. The acting itself was top notch. The images were spectacularly beautiful. My main complaint is the movie could have been made shorter with no loss of story. Meandered a little too much. It seemed rather indulgent, disjointed and the sound was terrible (too much whispering with loud background). Even though I feel my time was well spent, I cannot think most of my friends would think the same.

If you have a bent for philosophical and religious imagry and episodic, nostalgic storytelling, this one's for you. The fellow behind me left the theatre muttering "too artsy-fartsy." but that was a minority view. Especially appealing, perhaps, if you grew up in the 50s and 60s, but approachable by anyone with imagination and a sense of wonderment. Unusual and very moving.

The first 10-15 minutes were particularly tough. But by the time the movie was half way done, it made sense in this scheme of life piece--it is not a drama, it is a sort of "thoughts" on life. Religious? no, it is fairly existential.
For those of us that grew up in the fifties, it could have been made up of our home movies, certainly of our real memories. I've never seen anything that captured that time of life so well, without the usual symbolic nostalgia.
But is not easy, and it is long.

Too bad. This is probably Brad Pitt's finest performance. But his work and the small pieces of life are sandwiched between the most ridiculous and pretentious stuff you will ever see. i can imagine the director saying to himself, "What would Bergman have done if he had the technology and the money?" Answer - NOT this! And why in the world did Sean Penn sign up for this. He has essentially a non-speaking role, walking through modern buildings - all glass and angles.
We get it. We just don't need it. There are some lovely moments here and some fine acting. The kids are great. But the symbolism is so unsubtle and laid on so thick you want to scream. I admit that the music definitely helps, but nothing can save this director from himself.

The walkouts started a mere 10 minutes into the film. I thought the people leaving were being absurd, because I just figured it would get better. It didn't -- and in fact, got MUCH worse. All told, it's a trite, unentertaining meditation on the Book of Job and God (and why, if God is good, do bad things happen). Malick's answer is shallow, didactic, and often on-the-nose. I love THE THIN RED LINE, and despised this bucket of Malick's vomit. Occasionally, there is a bright spot of brilliant cinematography, and the older brother's acting is inspired at times. But overall, actors are underutilized. Feels like Malick scammed some producers into letting him shoot a bunch of exotic locations, then had an editor try to make sense of the mess with voiceover. Avoid it at all costs -- it's a terrible waste of time, and you'll leave the theater as less of a human because you've been exposed to this dreck. Forget the win at Cannes - the French are playing a joke on us.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
