This is an amazing movie, plain and simple. Tree of Life is a quiet introspective film that delivers subtlety in imagery and dialogue. I enjoy it when a film doesn't spell out every little detail, and leaves me asking more questions than there may be answers.
The fact that the movie is amazing isn't what interests me -- it's all the hubbub surrounding the movie: People asking for their money back, critics bashing this movie to bits because they don't understand which character is which.
This movie hits home in a more profound way, and I think poses a deeper question: has our culture become so inured to brash, easy-to-digest entertainment that we can no longer appreciate art? The fact that people are walking out of Tree of Life but staying for polished turds like Transformers 3 and Green Lantern is a telling sign of the times...discuss!

If one is looking for mindless entertainment, this is not the movie. Go see the Transformer series or anything from Disney. Better yet, go to Disney World -- where everything is just facsimile of the real thing.
The Tree of Life is a visual poem on the nature of relationships and loss. It does not have the conventional structure for a story, there isn't much in the way of dialogue.
I have a need to return and watch The Tree of Life once more, to savour the scenes and the message.

If you love watching 40 minutes of discovery channel pictures such as animals, volcanoes exploding, trees, the ocean, and birds flying in the sky then this is the movie for you. You don't even get to a real scene with people having a conversation until an hour or more into the film, and then you have to at least like listening to opera music and poems and finding deeper meanings in things to actually tolerate this film. I didn't completely hate it but I don't know how I sat through it at all.

I tend not to read reviews because I don't like movies to be 'spoiled' for me. In the case of Tree of Life, I should have been more prepared to see this film. While I appreciate the creator's desire to do something different, I'm not sure that this movie works. I consider myself to be fairly receptive and smart enough to identify symbols and metaphors, but I was completely lost watching this movie. The story was told in a random order, symbolic imagery was inserted at bizarre times, and it wasn't at all clear whose voice was whispering and to whom the voice was addressing. I also didn't buy Brad Pitt's character as a total bad guy. Many fathers of that era were much worse and less invoived with their families. And I would love it if someone could explain to me what Sean Penn's character was about. I walked out of the film after two hours-I couldn't take any more. That's a first for me!

As most reviews here indicate, people were disappointed that they were not properly entertained or didn't "get it" or understand. They were not fed their usual comic book heroes, packaged dramas or comedies, and spoon fed emotions. Instead, they attended something very different: a meditation or tone poem on life and existence. (I can hear the scoffing). This was a far from perfect effort that at some points bordered on the silly. But end to end it delivered a respite from the trivial, the brutal, and the blunt ugliness that makes up much of people's lives and entertainment these days. As a boy and a man, the movie was particularly successful for me. Touching painful and anxious forgotten parts and those parts kept deliberately sequestered. You cannot expect a lot of people (including those who describe themselves as "intelligent") to take, let alone enjoy, the kind of respite offered by TOL. They are just as lazy as the meathead moviegoers seeing something like Captain America or X-Men. Thank you, Mr. Mallick.

I consider myself to be intelligent and introspective, but I was so confused when this movie was over! All I could say was, "Huh???" The movie theater was sold out, but a few minutes into the movie people were walking out. Not only did they copy material from National Geographic, they used over two hours to explain something that should only take 30 minutes to an hour! I might expect this from Sean Penn, but Brad Pitt?! Brad! You can do much better than that!

This movie is unlike anything I’ve seen. If you see this movie, check all your expectations and notions about how a film “should” work at the door. If you go into it expecting the immediate gratification and the familiar, almost predictable format of your average American film, you probably won’t enjoy it. This film is meant to engage you not entertain you. If you have patience, it will no doubt be one of the most rewarding films you’ve seen.
As far as the movie itself, the best way I can describe is that it is a visual meditation on the questions of life and God. The cinematography and music in this film are amazing; they contribute as much to the story as the dialogue does. In terms of plot, it’s most certainly there. There is resolution and closure, albeit subtle, and not as pronounced as we may be used to.
Essentially, this is a movie that explores the tension between human nature and the metaphysical questions of our existence. It will leave you thinking.
Go see it. It’s well worth it.

Don't go to this movie expecting an action packed nail biter! That it is NOT! It is thought provoking and beautiful, great music with very little dialogue but a true look inside loss and family entanglements. When you go see a Terrence Mallick film, you should not go expecting to see your normal Hollywood fair. I think that may be the source for all of the bad reviews here. Mallick's style is not for everyone, but if you are open unique approaches to storytelling then this is a must-see. Stunning photography, masterful editing and creative expression that will keep you thinking and asking after you leave. Give it a shot.

Although I'd loved "Days of Heaven", a much earlier film by Terrance Malick, I'd been warned that the beginning of this movie was very slow. That was an understatement! Although the beginning was confusing and long, it was beautiful cinematography, you had to hang in there for 15 minutes to even know if there was going to be a story. When the story began it was really the life of a family seen from one of the son's eyes. It was beautiful and dark and I sat feeling tense and on the edge of my seat about what was going to unfold. I think most people did NOT get what was going on. I am a psychotherapist so I knew something was happening in the family, my husband, who is a writer, completely did NOT get it. It is subtle, the sound was turned down, I actually had to strain to hear it, which I don't know if that was on purpose or just a mistake the theatre made. It was dreamlike and at times I felt like I was on drugs. Fully mesmerizing and very clever. Some people left after the beginning scenes and some during the story which had some religious back pinnings which might have made some uncomfortable. It was sophisticated and you really need to pay attention. I think some people are not smart enough to understand what can happen to a vulnerable child in a family with a tyrannical parent. It did seem real to me although dreamlike and painful. I think Brad Pitt will be nominated for an Oscar and the woman was a wonderful unknown actress.

In many ways a lovely piece when not pretentious, which is often... I found the photographic/graphic sections significantly distracting.
A well-acted, rather ordinary story after all...

I never Review things but this one i just had to. I was very excited to see this movie and now i wish there was a way to get back those 2 hours of my life.
The Good first: 1. If you are a classic car buff. the collection of classic cars is just about the best and most well rounded collection i have seen in a currant movie ever. So looking at that keep me going. 2. Im a photographer, and i do have to say the photography was beautiful, angles and art direction. if it was a music video or performance piece 15 mins long of the best clips then AMAZING. but the average person is not going to give a rats ass about that.
The Bad Now if you are even able to stay awake. I dont recommend seeing this movie after a 7pm start time or if you are the least bit tired. You will never be able to survive it. the second challenge you will face is staying to the end. The only way you do that is to play games with your mind that any min this is going to get better - there is going to be a massive plot change or what every trickery you can play with your head to convince yourself to stay to the end.
For me it was just the fact of spending $13 bucks on this and i would be God Damned if i was not going to sit through the whole thing.
I did get the message - but i could have given that message in 10 mins. Sean Penn has about 7 lines in the whole movie so if you are going for him dont bother.
the actually story part. meaning actors speaking lines and mouths moving with words coming out of there mouths does not happen to about and hour in. i did fall asleep a couple times so maybe a missed a line in. But not sure there was more than 100 words to the movie in the first hour.
I could write about this for an hour. But id say you have to be a massive brad pitt fan to see this. or you just like to through away your money. if you are even thinking of it. wait for it to be on netflix you will be in your own house. maybe you can clean the bathroom why you are watching it. At least you will be able to do something productive with the 2 hours.. i was not so lucky i was stuck in that black box of a theater and i just lost 2 hours of my life. thank god i did not get hit by a car on the way home. and that was how i spent the last 2 hours of my life.

Ok, I am an avid movie watcher. I have a graduate degree, reasonably smart but seriously.
This movie was terrible. I mean I get what they were trying to do, but omg, it was all I could do to stay for the end. Many left early. They were the smart ones. Avoid it.

When leaving the theatre with companions it is natural to bounce thoughts off one another. The thoughts we both had were that the filmmaker indulged in a free-form lava lamp of images and sound that were somewhere between National Geographic specials and 2001: a Space Odyssey.
Every high schooler thinks about this stuff but since when must we spend our money to watch this trite stuff on screen. I am certain that (director) Mr. Malick thinks about the big questions as well but this amalgam of new-age nonsense and bloated Christianity is just plain dull. Long scenes of Jupiters moons, Saturns rings, cloud nebula, rushing waters, flickering flames and shadows do not make me think the director is arty: merely focused on old stuff. Trouble here is that the film was well crafted, lavish to watch, generally well-acted and could have been a thought-provoking piece rather than a stoners view of a lava lamp.
That is, we really wanted to enjoy it but if this is what passes for deep one had better check the accreditation of the institution.

... I loved it. It would be easy to "over think" The Tree of Life. It is a patchwork of images, sounds, movements, lights and shadows .... sparse dialogue .... all designed by director Terrance Malick to make us think ... or make us "run away". Either choice is acceptable. Malick is known for not caring about what the audience thinks .... but he does want to provoke thinking. In our packed theater at least 20 or 30 people left at some point during the movie and about half of those that remained (perhaps more) were perplexed and frustrated. Many varied opinions emerged post-movie - was it a statement of promotion for evolution .... for new agism .... for Christianity .... for agnosticism or something else? Was it an exercise in purely indulging Malick's artistic ego? I saw The Tree of Life as a movie about how we prioritize the absolute amazement of life itself. How wrapped up we get with day to day moments without putting those things into the context of the diversity of life, the ocean's depths, the cosmos itself. There is scripture throughout this movie - on screen at least once - and almost always in the classical music that underpins many of the amazing visual experiments in cinematography. Malick states the subtext of his movie, I think very clearly, in the beginning - Nature or Grace. Throughout our lives we "bob up and down on the oceans of our lives" sometimes giving in to nature - sometimes rising up to ... giving or accepting Grace. Maybe Malick is being pretentious and all "Hollywoody arsty-fartsy" as I have heard some say .... but I don't think so. Malick takes his film-making pretty serious. He does invest a lot of time and effort into his works. I, for one, appreciate this foray into putting some of the central issues about the magic and purpose of life itself onto film for everyone to see. In the end I highly recommend you see The Tree of Life with the caveat that it is not for everyone and that it does ask something of the viewer unlike the vast majority of movies that are designed to simply wash over you quickly without leaving you thinking, engaged or changed. As one of my favorite mentors once said ... "how do you know you will or won't like the tea until you taste it?" A shimmering sunset silhouetted rhino horn up.
