Very unusual story telling. It weaves a large often seemingly disconnected tapestry that requires "stepping back" into a larger space to the whole picture.
Can catch you off guard. Will upset people who want a set format that fits a standard mind set. Has a little Fellini and Kubrick.
Has many interesting and, on the surface, seemingly incongruous perspectives, stays open ended. The openendedness allows you to interpret it on many levels including some pretty high ones.
I like this kind of artistic experimentation that's not afraid of having some rough edges !

The heart of this film is a sensitive portrayal of a troubled but loving family. But the heart is surrounded by a lengthy slide show of beautiful but totally irrelevant abstract images. Relationships between the human characters are not clearly presented -- better read up on the plot before you see this one. The film is self-indulgent and pretentious -- a shame, since the filmmaker is obviously brilliant.

If someone has problems with slow moving films, don't go. I am OK with it. The film seemed preoccupied with dealing with birth order in terms of the children. I really liked how the family with it's challenges were depicted. It was not cut and dry. No real heroes or bad guys. People who were good or clueless, stuck in a box of the culture of the time. The images were interesting and beautiful but borderline pretentious. Not sure really what it had to do with the story of this family. But the film maker appeared to have fun with all the images and illusions. It was the best representation of dinosaurs that I have seen so far. I really felt for the creatures.
I liked the film and felt great compassion for the characters and wept on and off. The acting was wonderful. There was some guessing about what happened. I would recommend it. I even may go to see it again.

Meh. I wasn't buying what Terrence was selling. Gorgeously shot, but the story itself was pretty sleepy. I couldn't find myself rooting for any of the characters. If there was some larger point to be made with this film I guess it didn't really click for me.

this is the longest 2 1/2 hours of torture. reviewers make it sound that if you don't like it it's because you are not intelligent, that's a lot of crap. for the first hour there is no dialogue just opera music and clouds ,ocean, lava. again after 45 minutes people started to walk out. Sean Penn (he was the reason I went to see the movie) is only on for less then 15 min. and no dialogue, if you ever did drugs before you probably would like it, and if you are tired you will probably fall asleep so stay home and let the INTELLIGENT viewer explain it to you.

I can see why some people would hate this film and others would love it. It is beautifully directed, beautifully filmed, and beautifully acted. The story line is complex and, yes, disjointed. But this, to me, is "The Tree of Life."
If I did not understand all of the film, so much the better -- I certainly do not understand all of life. Those that did not like this film probably also dislike "2001, A Space Odyssey" (1968). They probably also would not sit through the Soviet version of "Solaris" (1972). Both have stayed in my head for more than 30 years and I know I will be thinking about "The Tree of Life" for quite a while.
