The cast was accomplished, vibrant and excellent. Staging was interesting and didn't detract. And, as always, the orchestra was superb. And AMC was most generous is offering a free pass to make up for the 'bombing' going on in the theatre next door.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I believe you can't find better artists than this cast to perform the opera. However I would not care to see it or hear it a second time. I favor the week-day showing. I look forward to future performances.

Here we have a 19th-century opera dressed in period costumes of another century and sets that move around like huge ghosts contemporary duds for Hamlet and his buddies.
Particularly enjoyed the banquet fiasco, though it got a little too bloody-ugly for comfort at the end of the scene. Choreography was fabulous for the outrageous play mocking the new king, and effective in the opening scene with the dark chorus and queenly Gertrude.
Another winner for HD which shows off the cast's nuanced acting to such advantage.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Ah, the shimmering sound of French opera! It surely can't be the music that has kept this Hamlet from being performed more -- the music is gorgeous. It may be the fundamental shift in emphasis from the Shakespeare play that drives the opera into interesting territory that may upset Shakespeare fans.
While in the play, the only evidence of Gertrude's guilt is in Hamlet's mind, in the opera, the queen's guilt and fear is right there on the stage. Lacy Macbeth is a piker compared to this Hamlet's mother!
The confrontation between Hamlet and Gertrude that constitutes most of the third act is visceral and real, emotionally terrifying, and while in the end Hamlet indeed "leaves her to heaven," she has lost her son's respect, if not his love. And there is no comic relief, because there is no arras, and no Polonius.
Before the opening, bloggers were writing about the "luxury casting" of the great Jennifer Larmore as Gertrude, as if such was nice, but not necessary. Au contraire! No one else comes to mind who could have brought the regal beauty, the nuanced acting, and the radiant multicolored dark mezzo to project queenly command and bone chilling fear in the same notes! One reviewer of the live production observed that Jennifer Larmore almost steals the show. Indeed!
Brava Jennifer Larmore! Bravo everybody else, too!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Living near NYC, I've enjoyed live performances at the Met for over 40 years. "Hamlet" was only my second HD experience, and it was fantastic. I had seen it at the Met a few weeks ago and wasn't impressed. But the telecast made a huge difference. The director wisely chose to emphasize closeups of the singers, which brought out much more detail than I had seen in person. The singers were all excellent, from Simon Keenlyside's wonderful performance in the title role right down to the two gravediggers' brief appearance. The backstage interviews were enjoyable, especially Marlis Petersen's account of how she was called to fill in as Ophelia on very short notice on opening night. There's nothing that can compare to being at the Met in person, so I'll continue my subscription - but I'll also be going to the HD telecasts for a different viewpoint.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Both the principals (Hamlet and Ophelie) and Gertrude are tremendously dramatic as well as endowed with gorgeous voices. It's a little difficult to "let go" of Shakespeare's Hamlet and allow this version to have its own life, especially since the opera is based on the play, but on its own terms it is a great romantic tale.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The first time the Met has staged this opera in over 100 years, and what a production it is. The voices were spectacular and the minimalist scenery added to the suspense - even though we know the outcomes. Here we have a dramatic presentation coupled with incredible acting skill and musical talent that engaged me emotionally and intellectually. I have been attending the Met Live in theaters for the fourth time and can say each one is a treat to see.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
