A revelation.Musically and dramatically, it's a tour de force, proving again that Verdi epitomizes music as drama.
The cast was stellar. Domingo's strong baritone is the centerpiece, Giordano's tenor soared particularly in the second half of the opera, Piezonka is radiant in every way, James Morris still has it, and all the minor roles were strong. Kudos to Renee Fleming for her wonderful interviews of the principals, to the between act traversals of backstage happenings, and to the larger than life production. I can't say enough about the job Fleming did making the interviews so conversational while eliciting so much fascinating information from the singers. A bonus was her interview with the always charming Kiri Te Kanawa.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

My first simulcast experience. My first time to see Boccanegra. I loved it. Placido Domongo was my favorite tenor, and now he is my favorite baritone. What an actor! All the voices we top notch. The music was beautiful.

This is the best form of opera you can watch. The movies are excellent and you can appreciate and learn about Opera in ways that you never expected it. My husband and I see everyone that is made available

I went to this opera knowing nothing about the story or anything about it, except that Placido Domingo would be performing. It was great! A political drama with a lot of human interest, and PD was worth the long run time! I found his performance to be quite moving. Bravo!

The Met productions are spectacular and the singers are the best. This opera is a good example of less-frquently performed Verdi that should be seen more often.
Unfortunately, there were a large number of gaps in the sound which detracted from an otherwise great experience. The Met needs to get these technical glitches fixed if its HD program is to succeed long term.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This was my introduction to Boccanegra, and I loved the entire production. I was highly focused on Placido's performance, in light of his age, his unbelievable schedule, and his recent hospitalization and imminent surgery. Placido, throughout, had the energy and voice of a younger man. At one point, water streamed down his face, and I believed that it represented tears. The set, costume, singing, and orchestral performance were all great.

I really loved this Verdi opera. Mr. Domingo is just amazing. What a fine cast for this masterpiece. The sets and lighting were exquisite. Next to seeing opera live, this is thhe best way to see great opera.

Pro. You see and hear best singers, and in close up. HD is marvelous for clarity.
Modern movie theaters are much more comfortable than old fasioned Opera hauses. (They have more money, Ha, ha.)
Con. This particular opera (Simon Boccanegra)
had no memorable melodies, to sing while in the shower. Ha, ha.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

What a WONDERFUL way to see an opera!!! I'm an absolute Met Opera fan and go as often as I can, but can only afford the standing room tickets way up in the nosebleed section of the house. With Met HD, I was able to see the singers, costumes, sets, backstage set changes, live interviews with the singers and music director, James Levine, just before they entered or exited the stage... up close and personal... FABULOUS!!!! One really comes away with a complete experience. Also the benefit of seeing it in a movie theatre is that you have more comfortable seats with leg room, the lines to the bathroom aren't as long as at the Met and you can even eat popcorn while watching!!! Wohoo! :o)

The support from the theater was terrible. We were attending the "encore" performance since the theater was closed due to snow in the day of the performance.
But the recording wouldn't play (you would think that they would have checked). After 50 minutes we gave up and left. Very disappointing

Firstly, seeing this in a theater on HD is a very nice experience. It is still not as magical as being in the house even though acoustically and visually it is better. there is something about being there that cannot be replicated. However, this truly is the next best thing.
As far as the performance itself, it was extraordinary and very moving. Being able to see the facial expressions of Placido Domingo was very revealing. The singing was magnificent and it is a truly great and underappreciated opera.

I couldn't pick up on what Mr Levine liked about this opera. I thought the plot weak and the music unmemorable. The singing was fine, the acting ok, and Levine's conducting excellent. The sets were very handsome with good lighting (the Prologue, the Doge's palace. But overall, I wouldn't rank this as a must-see of all the Verdi operas. I can't remember a chorus or time during the opera that I was fully engaged with any of it. Other broadcasts have been absolutely fantastic! Go see them. I see the European ones on HD locally through another venue. Been a great season for it all.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

We thoroughly enjoyed Simon Boccanegra in HD movie format. The perspectives from the orchestra pit, backstage, and close ups were simply amazing. Picture was razor sharp and was wonderful for close up checking out the singers and their fine costumes. Between acts interviews with the leads and conductor were quite interesting. Highly recommend. Just get there at least 1/2 hour early. Seats get taken very early.
