I haven't been to an opera in years, but since Elina Garanca, a fellow Latvian, was singing the title role, I decided to give it a try. Hers was a remarkable performance. The staging and the rest of the cast were truly outstanding as well.
Now I can't wait for the next performance from the Met.

I loved everything about this production. The singing was uniformly outstanding. Set design and costumes were excellent. I loved the camera work; I felt like I was right onstage with the performers. It's the next best thing to being at the Met in person. I just wish more movie theaters in my area (Washington DC-Baltimore metro area) would show the HD broadcasts. They're so popular here, they sell out fast. I had to go to the encore showing, because the live broadcast was sold out.

The best CARMEN I have even seen. The acting was really top notch and the voices glorious. The sets are inventive and the staging almost perfect. See it if you have a chance.

This performance was stunningly awesome. The singing was superb, the acting heart wrenchingly real, and it was without a doubt the most sexual, sensual Carmen I've ever seen. It bordered on R rated at times, but I feel this only added to it's power. I would've immediately sat through another performance if given the chance. It was THAT good. The only downside was that the audio quality in the theater could've been better. It just didn't match the majesty of the music.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Opera is not for everybody. I've never been to one before but I thought I would give it a try. Carmen is an excellent one to choose as your first because you will likely recognize many of the melodies. The performances in this Metropolitan opera rendition were fabulous. The story is simple and the subtitles aren't at all distracting so you can really focus on the music, as it should be!

This is an amazing performance. The set is magnificent, the singing level superb, the acting is very nuanced and the entire tone is very physical, sexual, and over the top -- even more than usual for an opera. I'd see this again in a heartbeat.

Absolutely fabulous. CAll the singers were superb. The interpretation of the opera was right on--modernized a bit, gorgeous costumes. Love seeing it on the big screen, with closeups, etc. And intermission info and interviews add to the entertainment.

Loved it! I was mesmerized. Esp. loved the "behind the scenes" at the intermissions.
HOWEVER, I thought the audio, which is the whole point of opera, was too quiet and did not command the theatre.

This opera presentation was the BEST I've ever seen...the camera work, the WORST. Rapid, maniacal panning from left to right, diagonally and in half-circles...did someone lose control of the camera? zoom in/zoom out...take Dramamine if you see it and hope they fix it before they replay it on PBS...although the small screen may help hide the erratic. Carmen, Don Jose and Esamillo were FANTASTIC...hurray for the substitute Escamillo...a little fast on his "torreador" but all else fabulous. Excellent costumes & sound.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Met's simulcast of Carmen -- indeed, the simulcasts are a great delight, I find. I gather that some viewers do not like the close-ups, but I enjoy the fact that singers must also act -- very different from the opera performances I saw in my childhood and, indeed, until recently.
But this one was particularly grand, and I think Elina Garanca will own the role for a considerable time. Roberto Alagna is always fine, and it was interesting to hear Teddy Tahu Rhodes pinch-hitting as Escamillo.

The Met Opera performance of Carmen was simply stupendous. The beautiful Elina Garanca is one of my favoriate opera divas and her singing and acting in this performance were magnificent. Roberto Alagna was also fine. It was the most moving and exciting performance of Bizet's opera I have seen.

Without doubt, the best Carmen I've ever seen (and I've seen dozens). Aside from a few minor issues with the French pronunciation of the non-French singers, this production is outstanding. Alagna is probably the best Don Jose currently available and of course his French is impeccable. See it if you can.

Never have passion, sensuality, beautiful voices, excellent acting, grace, beauty and top notch talent so combined for a really memorable evening. It was better than being there because the camera was right on all of the action all of the time and it was outstanding.
I would love to see this over and over again.

Elina Garança was a stupendous Carmen; Barbara Frittoli's Micaëla provided a beautiful contrast to the mezzo "heroine?". Speaking as a musician, I was truly impressed by the woodwind section of the Met orchestra -- such line and shape in their playing! Sequin did a terrific job, as well. A new but compelling addition to the typical Carmen production was the introduction of several beautifully-danced pas de deux, providing an emotional linkage between acts. Stunning performance -- not to be missed!!

I was spellbound from start to finish. Elina Garanca was nothing short of amazing! She has a voice from Heaven, plus the looks, and acting ability; these all combine to give her the complete packaging needed to be a super-star. Kudos to the Met Opera for offering their operas to the masses.

An absolutely amazing Carmen! Elina Garanca is fabulous - charming, seductive, athletic, sociopathic, exciting! Kudos to Richard Eyre for terrific directing. Teddy Tahu Rhodes made a wonderful Met debut as Escamillo. Even the children's chorus was wonderful! Great dancing! Great costumes! Great conducting by Seguin, in his Met debut too! Don't miss it.

What an electrifying "Carmen". Elina Garanca is officially a Star! She was mesmerizing. It was unfortunate that Roberto Alagna is prop disabled and much of the time looked as if he was not sure where or how to stand or move. Nevertheless, he gave a credible performance and Garanca managed to hold him up. The rest of the company was outstanding and the Kiwi's last-minute Escamillo was terrific. This is a wonderful show for opera newbies.

I saw the original and loved it SOOOOO much, I went back for more. How I loved this production for every reason. It was simply the best Carmen I've seen and I've seen many. The choreography was fantastic as well. I can still see Carmen and the other dancers swishing before me now along with that beautiful rhythmic music. And Don Jose's Flower song was mesmerizing. Sincerely the best I've seen. I'm very much hoping that Garanca and Alagna appear in the next Met season. Bravo is an understatement for this one.

As a veteran theater and film goer but a novice at opera I experienced this presentation of Carmen as spellbinding. Elina Garanca is singularly gifted: beautiful in face and voice, powerful in acting presence, surprisingly funny and, might I say, refreshingly sexual. I couldn't take my eyes off her! The other principle players were excellent as well, but she captured my heart.
I intend to reserve tickets for the remainder of the season

This was the most amazing production of Carmen I've seen -- a wonderful blend of dramatic acting, gorgeous singing (and how exactly do you manage to sing upside down and backwards, or with someone sitting on top of you?!), and great production values.
During the backstage interviews, Roberto said that Elena was "the most complete Carmen ever" and I believe him. The two of them together had terrific chemistry.
