I've studied the music from Carmen since the age of 9 and have seen many productions of the opera over my 69 years. This was the best performed version of the opera I've ever seen. The cast is wonderful and the production is acceptable even though not a Zeffirelli. Elina owns this role; Alagna was very charming and sang well in spite of a cold; the Escamillo was terrific as all the minor roles - all performed extremely well with great voices. Dancing also was well done. Stunning, stunning production and performance! THIS IS A DON'T MISS!! Bring a younger person to this one - they will love it!! The best DVD is movie with Placido Domingo and Julia McGinnis.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This is a dramatic, energetic performance of Carmen. The singing and acting are wonderful: warm, nuanced and convincing. The sets are very good too, though perhaps not quite so spectacular as the Met's previous Zefferelli sets. I hope to see this production again.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I was skeptical that the Met (HD Live) could possible capture the passion of the BIzet opera... and I was wrong. If anything, the staging and choreography was MORE amazing than expected, the music more intense, the story more entrancing. I was astonished...
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Messo was outstanding, filming was a downer... I want to see the whole stage and see the other folks reaction/ roles in the action.
Best Carmen seen or heard by myself or my mom (78) a couple more Carmens viewed.
But again, I have been to the Met and I want to see the whole stage not the nostrils of the performers.
Sound problems at the theater were a distraction, sometimes mono, sometimes stereo...
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This production was much better than I expected it would be or could be. Elina Garanca not only sang beautifully but acted the role and looked the part. She was perfection! The conductor drew a spirited performance out of the orchestra; it was like watching Sir Neville Marriner conduct the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, but even more animated. Great sets and costumes, wonderful tableau at the conclusion. Even the children on stage were a delight, totally in character, lively, believable. But the music and the story's themes ruled the show. I WISH I COULD GO AGAIN!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

To able to be so up close and personal, to see every nuance of the performances is truly a treat. Garanca was the best Carmen I have ever seen. Even my dad, who is not a big opera buff, loved every minute of it.
Only downside - the theater were were in had some audio problems which were a big disappointment to me. I noticed it much more than either of parents did though. If you're planning on attending this at the Otay Ranch in Chula Vista, call ahead to make sure they've fixed their right audio channels.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

My wife and I were extremely disappointed in this production of Carmen! It was a poor substitute for live opera. The filming was atrocious! Constantly moving camera work almost made you physically ill. The penchant for extreme close ups was bizarre. You could evaluate make up and costuming but could not truly appreciate the sets, blocking and choeography. SOFT opera which you frequently strain to hear does not serve audience or the performers weil. To have a quality live performance of a beautiful opera with extremely talented performers ruined by absymally poor filming and audio presentation seems criminal!
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Wonderful experience visually and musically.
Acting and voices were perfect. I loved the new staging and lighting. A few prop glitches I'm sure were corrected in subsequent live performances. The director was so talented and infused the orchestra with his verve and enthusiasm. The entr'acte pas de deux was stunning, as were the other dance sequences.
Bravo
