The orchestral and vocal performances were first-rate. Beyond, that, however, there were issues. This rather literally-minded production is somewhat dated and fails to do justice to the complexity and subtlety of this work. Why is Mariandl so dowdy? Why isn't the competition between Ochs & the Italian tenor funny as well as incongruous? Why is Maria Therese dressed as the Fairy Princess in Act 3? (& Why don't Sophie's dresses fit?) There were also multiple interminable intermissions that could easily have been edited down for an encore broadcast. Finally, the local theater crew still haven't mastered network broadcast projection. These are wonderful telecasts as a series, but there is room for improvement in this one.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The opera is one of my favorites so I have heard many versions and this cast can stand comparison with the best. Singing, and, yes, acting are exemplary. (Fleming's Marschallin is particularly special. The end of Act One can break your heart.) The playing of the orchestra and the conducting of de Waart is everything you could wish. The only negative was the actual experience. The screen was blocked four times during the performance by what looked like a computer program. The audience tried to get the projection room to fix it and all the yelling drowned out some of the singing. I would be leery of watching a Met broadcast at this theater again. Can't wait for the DVD, though.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A magnificent performance by first-rate artists was made even better by the presentation. The camera is on the stage with the singers, and moves around very creatively to focus the viewer's attention, mostly in the right places. And at intermission the camera roams around the stage so that the viewer can watch the set change, which is just fascinating, and catches Placido Domingo (in this case) interviewing the singers as they come off the stage. The sound system was good, the HD stunning without being intrusive. Really great way to catch the Met if you happen not to be in New York!

One virtue of the Met simulcasts is the possibility of seeing great singers in close-up. That can have drawbacks however. In this opera the title role---of Octavian, the Rosenkavalier---is a "trouser role"---a female singer, in this case Susan Graham, plays a man. I suspect that the passionate opening scene involving Octavian and the Marschallin would have been played differently had it involved a male and female singer. As things were, it might have been better not to be so close to the action---to imagine what was going on rather than to see it in detail. This is a small gripe. Graham sang beautifully throughout. Renee Fleming's performance as the Marschallin was both subtle and moving.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

My wife and I enjoyed the opera and the inermission features.
We have signed up for 2 others.
One suggestion: The projectionist should be more attentive. The lights should go when the introduction starts and not after the opera begins.

The production was wonderful. The cast was outstanding. The music was fantastic - what else can be said? The encore show does get a little late in the evening, but there were plenty of good seats. I have been very impressed with these shows broadcast from the Met. In the past I used to watch DVD or VCR "movies" done of operas. They were poorly done, had limited cameras, were static and boring - stand and sing style productions. These Met Opera broadcasts really highlight the acting and stand on their own as great art.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Outstanding. Totally "class" act. Top of the heap of entertainment experiences. Better than live in person because of the better camera angles and intermission educational content. Far superior to the trash produced by Hollywood.

When I went to see Der Rosenkavalier last night, the last time I had seen the opera was in 1960. This production was infinitely better. All of the singers were in tune, the voices were wonderful, the stage direction and scenery were spectacular. The acting was smooth and beiievable. It was the best of the Met HD, European Grand Operas and the ill fated SFO Productions that I have seen and I have experienced nearly all of them. I would heartly recomment this production to seasoned opera buffs and to newcomers.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
