The HD telecasts are always better than in-house, no matter what the announcer for each broadcast is being told to say.
I thought the lead singer was very good. I felt the person who played Hoffman's muse was too aloof and not involved enough, although she sang well. Surprisingly, the very fine Anna Netrebko's singing seemed a bit hard-edged. Perhaps the staging was a little TOO decadent to be compelling.
But I enjoyed the production very much overall.

This production was our first viewing of "simulcast" opera and although we had seen the performance on stage in NYC, this was so much better! We could see the costumes better, the performers expressions and the quality of the simulcast were all superb. Our only negative comment was the volume - sometimes one had the sense the stars were screaming when the text did not indicate anger or stress. We have already recommended the venue to several friends.

Opera at its finest! A great production. Superb in all ways. And it makes you think to boot. For what more can you ask than outstanding voices, acting, staging, costumes, interpretation, score, conducting and a message too? My first introduction to this specific opera but it won't be my last!

This is the best production I’ve ever seen, with a terrific cast. Kathleen Kim was a very convincing mechanical doll. But it's obvious that whoever directs the photography isn’t an opera-goer and doesn’t realize how important it is to see the full set and how the other characters are reacting – in other words, too many closeups. At least this time we weren’t subjected to those silly overhead shots.

I almost thoroughly enjoyed this production, except for the noise generated by loud, excessive popcorn eating next to me. Thinking changing seats was the solution, I wound up next to a gentleman who not only ate pistachios but shelled them, threw them on the floor and then brushed them under the seat in front of him. I didn't dare try changing seats again - I'd probably wind up next to a gum-cracking opera lover. The popcorn eater replied to a request not to rattle the bag by saying, "This is a movie, not the opera."

Of all the Live in HD operas broadcast by the Met, this was one of my favorites. Great music, excellent performances and terrific staging. I went to see it twice (live and encore).
