This was my first such experience and it couldn't have been better. I actually felt too close to the performers and would probably enjoy the show even more if my seats were further away from the screen. I' definitely come back for more.

I understand the frustration that some might have with quick camera cuts, not enough views of all the action occuring on-stage, and close-ups that seem to last too, too long, but I found all that to be minor distractions. This performance held my attention from start to finish, including Deborah Voight's (sp?) dynamic interviews. Hoffman, his three loves, and his muse did a very good acting job in addition to their excellent singing. I especially liked the emotional facial expressions of the singers (those close-ups again) -- it made all the difference in the world in transforming the production into an emotional experience and not just a concert-in-costume rendition of the music.

I'm very familiar with this opera, and this has to be the best production of Hoffman that I've seen in years if not ever. The big screen and surround sound take you into the Met, and you soon forget yourself in the wonderful musicmanship of this outstanding cast.

I felt that this was as close to heaven as I could get. The production in its entirety was wonderful - costumes, lighting, the choreography, the staging, and of course the music and voices. Loved seeing the close up action, which is missed when one is at a live performance beyond row 5! And there are no intermission interviews. The price was right and there was no problem parking!

Breathtaking. I've seen several performances of Hoffman but never anyone that had the emotional and intellecutal impact of this one. Incredible performances and remarkable staging.

Unfortunately, the theater I prefer was sold out and had to settle for the Encore. I was disappointed with the quality of the picture, which was washed out. The projectionist also did not calibrate the level of the sound until about 20 minutes of the performance. Beautiful production, great singing and conducting. I agree with many reviewers about the excess of close-ups of the singers, to the detriment of the overall experience. But what a wonderful experience these broadcasts are! The problem is that when one goes to the opera house, the voices don't come across with the intensity of the broadcast. I'll continue watching the HD broadcasts, however, and once in a while will also go to the opera houses (San Francisco and San Jose, CA).

This was my first full length opera performance and will not be my last. I was so taken by the performances of Anna Netrebko, Joseph Calleja, Alan Held and Kate Lindsey, they took my breath away and held my attention every second. I think seeing it on screen in HD boosted my enjoyment level because I loved being able to see the expressions and emotions on all the faces. Amazing. Kate Lindsey as the Muse - she will probably never get the recognition she deserves for her part. Excellence.

There were times when I'd have liked to see what was going on with other characters, rather than just a close up of one person. However, the compensation was the backstage glimpses and interviews during intermissions, superficial as they were.
The opera was GORGEOUS. The singing was wonderful, as were the costumes. Set was a little dark and too bare, though.
All in all, it was just a thrilling experience and i plan to go to all the rest.

Met's casts are consistently outstanding. It was exciting to hear new talent and sad to see established talent go plump. The overall enjoyment of the production - music, singing and staging - is limited by the quick cutting and strange camera angles. One comes to opera to hear foremost and here the visual overwhelmingly dominate. It's a film editing treatment of a stage production. It interferes with actually hearing. Closeups are fine, as are the intermission interviews. Please find an editor who can do justice to the idea of being in the opera house itself, if only virtually.

This is the best Hoffmann I have ever seen. The Met is the best in the world today. The quality of the singers was fantastic. The opera direction by Bartlett Sher was just amazing, and the HD transmission very good as usual. Will be back on Saturday for the Rosenkavalier!

A tour de force. Such wild staging could have overpowered the singing and the message, but the power of the principal performers and the close-ups, not to mention Levine's masterful conducting, kept it all in balance.
Most interesting was Nicklausse's participation--hovering, commentary, interaction--lots of surprises. Kate's facial expressions and body posture conveyed a lot and persuaded one to her point of view.
Thanks to Bloomberg for making the HD broadcasts possible.

Rolando, Anna, Kathleen, Ekaterina, were just superb!!! What a masterpiece! I must add that I adored the incredible Muse and Devil. The characters were not only sublimely sang, but greatly acted! When you start with a wonderful opera and a first-rate cast, it's hard to go wrong, and this was a wonderful screening of a particularly fascinating production.
But the approach often used film characteristics rather than stage ones. There were numerous close-ups that you don't get in the opera house, which were welcome to watch cast members in a way virtually impossible in the opera house But the extent to which this was carried was too much at the expense of being able to watch the entire stage. That's the pleasure of a live performance at the opera house with all the very interesting details one sees on the entire stage.

An excellent performance - better than going to the Metropolitan Opera itself because one would not experience the close-up view, interviews of the singers. A great experience for both opera lovers (me) and newcomers to opera. Not to mention the money saved by not having to travel to NYC. Thank you to all involved.

This production was fabulous -- voices, acting, music, sets, costuming -- all nonpareil! I've seen a handful of other Met productions on the screen and been pleased, but this one was incredible! I was particularly struck by the lighting and camera work -- absolutely spot-on in capturing and conveying the moods, reactions and gestures -- no matter how fleeting or minor -- of singers and the story. Joseph Calleja, Kate Lindsey, and Kathleen Kim -- bravi!!

I was blown away by the way this was shown on the big screen. Very well directed. The performance was spot on and the score was a raging frolic which kept me atached to the story throughout. Having subtitles was a great way to bring the story to life for those who are new to the opera. 5 stars for sure!!!
