As a short person, I spend most of my time staring at the back of the head in front of me at regular opera venues. Thanks to stadium seating at the cinema I was able to see the entire show. So this was a vast improvement and much less expensive. The sets were a sumptuous treat for the eyes. The singing was wonderful. And who amongst us has not sung along on Nessun Dorma in the car or in the shower? The downside was the sound leakage from the cinema next door. Somehow the apocalypse-like explosions intruded rather than enhanced the opera experience. Still, better a few explosions than an evening of peering around someone’s head. I did encourage several friends to see the show.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This was disappointing. The beautiful children's chorus was interrupted for several minutes by an ad for Dish-TV accompanied by mediocre jazz. Inferior camera work included too much zooming and diving. A seemingly handheld camera shook up and down during one interview. The interviewer (whose name was never posted on the screen) asked inane questions like "Isn't singing at the Met a great experience?" The over-long intermissions were probably dictated by the over-elaborate sets. Both Calaf and Turandot seemed to be struggling at times. Puccini's gorgeous music did shine through, but we can listen to that at home.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Found this viewing of the opera holding my interest more than in the opera house. It just seemed there was more drama to it. Whether it was the sets, the camera angles, these particular singers, it is hard to say. But this viewing of Turandot on the big screen was very enjoyable, and I am one who tends to be lukewarm on Puccini. Nor do I mind the intermission interviews nor the stagehands moving scenery. For someone with little knowledge of the inner workings of theater, it gives a little more insight into the backstage of theater production, and that is a good thing.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This was the first time I watched the opera Turandot on HD. It was an enchanting and emotionally moving experience for me.
I was delighted from beginning to end. The staging was a feast for the eyes -- the music was food for the soul -- the costumes were beautiful and colorful.
The intermission interviews with the key players was an extra special touch.
I would definitely recommend this to my friends -- in fact, I already have!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Production was good. Sound quality in the theater not so good. Tell the manager it's not a 2012 movie.

I've seen this production at the met several times. This was a wonderful experience. I just wish they would pan out to see the whole stage more often. I thought the singers were excellent, Poplavskaya was great! Hope to see her again.Giordani bottomed out with the low notes. As far as mid-week showing I prefer it.
The only problem was the transmission went out several times and at some of the best moments of the opera. There was a problem at the sending end.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Opera was fabulous, however the picture on the screen was very fuzzy. Very disappointing. It probably had to do with the projection and not the production.

The best thing of course is Puccini's magnificent music. The Met orchestra absolutely nailed it, and the singing was excellent, especially the Liu coloratura. My favorite performance of Turandot is the one at the Forbidden City in Beijing itself. Still, the clever opulence of the Met staging, lighting and costumes were nothing short of brilliant -when we could see them. The dark scenes in Acts I and III were too dark and dull for my taste.
My wife and I loved the various camera angles, the interviews, and the almost naughty feeling of peeking backstage between acts. We can't wait to see Tales of Hoffman.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
